To treat Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome with sudden vomiting and diarrhea), characterized by mental confusion and obstruction.
Evodiae Fructus (steeped in boiling water, then baked and stir-fried) Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (coarse skin removed, processed with ginger juice) Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (soaked in boiling water, white pith removed, baked) Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma Codonopsis Radix
The above are ground into a fine powder. Mix with half a sheng of fresh ginger juice, form into cakes, and dry in the sun. Before use, roast until dry, then grind again into a fine powder. Take two qian per dose. Add one zhan of water, decoct to seven-tenths, and take warm.
Huoluan generally involves vomiting and diarrhea. Gan Huoluan (dry cholera) occurs when cold qi attacks the stomach, causing food stagnation. Symptoms include abdominal fullness, restlessness, colicky pain, and shortness of breath. Because the intestines and stomach are initially filled with excess pathogenic factors, there is no vomiting or diarrhea; hence it is called Gan Huoluan.
To treat Gan Huoluan:
Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (coarse skin removed, coated with fresh ginger juice and roasted until yellow and fragrant) Aurantii Fructus (pistil and inner membrane removed, stir-fried with bran) Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma Arecae Semen Nitrini Sulfuratum
Crush and sieve the above ingredients. Take three qianbi per dose. Add one and a half zhan of water, decoct to one zhan, remove the dregs, and take warm.
To treat deficiency of the Spleen's primordial qi, where Huoluan presents without vomiting or diarrhea, abdominal distension like a drum, and phlegm turbidity obstructing the chest and heart.
Tscherskii Cardamomi Fructus Puerariae Radix Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (roasted) Zingiberis Rhizoma Fresh (half liang) Halitum
Chop the above ingredients finely. Add one and a half zhan of urine from an uncircumcised boy, decoct to one zhan, remove the dregs, and divide into two doses for warm administration.
To treat Gan Huoluan with obstruction of both urination and defecation, heat in the palms of hands and soles of feet, and severe restlessness.
Abutilonis Semen Talcum Elsholtziae Herba (two liang each) Chaenomelis Fructus (one piece, sliced finely, skin and core removed)
Crush and sieve the above. Take five qianbi per dose. Add two zhan of water, decoct to one zhong, remove the dregs, and take warm. Once urination and defecation become smooth and the mind feels clear, recovery is immediate. Typically requires four or five doses.
Zhong'e Huoluan (cholera caused by evil invasion) results from external pathogenic factors invading internally, causing sudden chaos of healthy qi. This prevents digestion of food in the stomach and causes blockage and stagnation of the qi mechanism. Symptoms include sudden pain in the heart and abdomen, vomiting, diarrhea, and restlessness. In severe cases, spirit becomes clouded and consciousness is lost. This is attributed to "ghost qi."
To treat Huoluan due to Zhong'e, characterized by unconsciousness, heart pain, abdominal distension, and loss of appetite.
Tscherskii Cardamomi Fructus Styrax Benzoini Resina Santali Albae Lignum Cyperi Rhizoma (stir-fried, hairs removed) Aquilariae Lignum Burserae Resina Moschus Costi Fructus (roasted, peel used) Cornu Rhinocerotis
Except for those requiring separate grinding, grind the remaining ingredients into a fine powder. Mix with the separately ground powders until uniform. Form pills with refined honey, sized like wutong seeds. Take five pills per dose at any time, washed down with warm wine. Dosage may be adjusted for adults and children. For severe cases, dissolve in warm wine. Take four to five times daily until cured. Store this medicine in a porcelain container.
