Yin deficiency with vigorous Yang pulse is termed *Beng* (sudden heavy uterine bleeding). Blood seeping and Qi leaking is termed *Lou* (prolonged scanty uterine bleeding). Some cases result from labor injuring the primordial Qi, causing Qi to fail to control the blood. Some result from Liver and Spleen deficiency, causing blood to leave its vessels. Some result from emotional stagnation, causing blood to leak abnormally. Some result from external wind-heat forcing the blood to move recklessly due to pathogenic invasion. This is what is meant by: injury to the Yang collaterals causes blood to overflow externally, while injury to the Yin collaterals causes blood to seep internally. Sudden massive bleeding that cannot be restrained is called *Beng*. Menstrual blood dripping continuously without stopping is called *Lou*.
The pulse in *Beng* is often *Kou* (floating, large, and empty in the center, like pressing a scallion stem), while the pulse in *Lou* must be *Se* (rough and hesitant, like a light knife scraping bamboo). A rapid pulse indicates blood heat; a soft pulse indicates Qi deficiency. Wind invading the Chong and Ren vessels results in a floating and wiry pulse; cold coagulating at the uterus gate results in a deep and fine pulse. If accompanied by blood stasis, a rough and stagnant pulse is undoubtedly present.
Treatment for *Beng* should support the Yuan Qi, astringe blood, and raise clear Yang. Treatment for *Lou* should regulate the menses; when the blood is pure, it will stop naturally. For stasis, clear and tonify; for heat, cool and purify; for wind, disperse; for cold, warm. Ultimately, one must treat according to the syndrome, examining the disease to adapt the method.
The main prescription is *Buyin Yiqi Jian* (Nourish Yin and Boost Qi Decoction) added with *Baishao* (Radix Paeoniae Alba) and *Xueyu Hui* (Ash of Human Hair). If accompanied by wind, add stir-fried black *Jingjie* (Herba Schizonepetae); if accompanied by heat, add stir-fried black *Danpi* (Cortex Moutan); if accompanied by cold, add black *Jianghui* (Ash of Ginger); if Qi is deficient, double the dose of *Renshen* (Radix Ginseng) and add *Zhi Huangqi* (Honey-fried Radix Astragali); for slippery blood, add *Baizong Hui* (Ash of Palm Fiber) and *Chishizhi* (Halloysitum Rubrum); for abdominal pain, add *Guangmuxiang* (Radix Aucklandiae) and *Xiangfu* (Rhizoma Cyperi); for blood stasis, add vinegar-stir-fried *Yanhuhu Hui* (Ash of Rhizoma Corydalis). If there is indeed blood stasis, *Puhuang Hui* (Ash of Pollen Typhae) and *Wulingzhi Hui* (Ash of Trogopterus Dung) can be added. All these should be vinegar-fried to promote astringency. In *Beng* syndromes, regulating Qi and blood is primary. If it belongs to severe deficiency, i.e., *Lou*, tonifying and astringing methods should be used. Do not adhere rigidly to a single method.
**Buyin Yiqi Jian (Nourish Yin and Boost Qi Decoction)**
Treats *Beng* and *Lou* due to dual deficiency of Qi and Blood, sinking of clear Yang, with a soft, wiry, slightly rapid pulse.
*Shengdi* (5 qian), *Renshen* (1.5 qian), *Danggui* (3 qian, vinegar-fried), *Shengma* (0.3 fen, vinegar-fried), *Shanyao* (3 qian, stir-fried), *Chaihu* (0.5 fen, vinegar-fried), *Zhigancao* (0.8 fen), *Chenpi* (1.5 qian), Stir-fried black *Heye* (1 leaf).
Decoct in water, remove dregs, take warm.
Dual deficiency of Qi and Blood and sinking of clear Yang cause blood to leave its vessels, resulting in *Beng* and *Lou* that cannot stop abruptly. *Shengdi* nourishes Yin and strengthens Water, capable of cooling blood and stopping bleeding. *Renshen* supports Yuan Qi and boosts Qi, raising sunken Yang. *Shanyao* tonifies Spleen and benefits Yin. *Danggui* nourishes blood and returns it to its vessels. *Shengma* raises clear Yang of the Yangming channel. *Chaihu* raises clear Yang of the Shaoyang channel. *Chenpi* regulates Qi and harmonizes the middle. *Zhigancao* moderates urgency and harmonizes the Stomach. The addition of stir-fried black *Heye* also aims to raise Yang and stop bleeding. Decoct in water and take warm. When Qi and Blood are filled internally, the Spleen and Stomach benefit, and blood naturally returns to its vessels. How could clear Yang sink and cause *Beng* and *Lou*?
**Qingre Dihuang Tang (Clear Heat and Rehmannia Decoction)**
Treats bloody flooding with irritability and heat, with a surging and rough pulse.
*Shengdi* (5 qian), *Huanglian* (1.5 qian, stir-fried black), *Baishao* (1.5 qian, vinegar-fried), *Jingjie* (1.5 qian, stir-fried black), *Zhimu* (1.5 qian, stir-fried black), *Huangbai* (1.5 qian, stir-fried black), *Danggui* (3 qian, vinegar-fried), *Danpi* (1.5 qian, stir-fried black), *Diyu* (3 qian, charred).
Decoct in water, remove dregs, take warm.
Blood deficiency with latent heat forcing blood to move recklessly causes persistent irritability and heat, making bloody flooding particularly severe. *Shengdi* nourishes Yin and strengthens Water. *Huanglian* descends fire and clears the Heart. *Huangbai* clears excessive Minister Fire. *Zhimu* moistens the dryness of Qi and Blood. *Jingjie* disperses latent fire to regulate blood. *Baishao* astringes wandering blood to preserve Yin. *Danpi* cools blood and stops bleeding. Vinegar-fried *Danggui* nourishes and retains blood. Charred *Diyu* astringes blood to stabilize it. Decoct in water and take warm. When latent fire transforms and Qi and Blood fill, irritability and heat recede naturally, and blood does not move recklessly. Why would bloody flooding not stop?
**Jinhua San (Jinhua Powder)**
Treats sudden bloody flooding with abdominal pain, with a rapid, rough, and large pulse.
*Danggui* (3 liang, vinegar-fried), *Puhuang* (1.5 liang, stir-fried black), *Ganjiang* (6 qian, roasted black), *Guixin* (6 qian, stir-fried black), *Huanglian* (6 qian, stir-fried black), *Shigao* (6 qian, baked), *Lingxian* (6 qian, stir-fried black).
Grind into powder, take 3 qian with rice drink.
Imbalance of cold and heat, with blood stasis obstructing the Chong and Ren vessels, causes abdominal pain, irritability, and unceasing sudden bloody flooding. *Jiang* and *Gui* warm the cold of the Chong and Ren. *Shigao* and *Huanglian* calm the heat of the Liver and Stomach. Vinegar-fried *Danggui* nourishes blood and returns it to its vessels. Stir-fried black *Puhuang* breaks stasis and stops bleeding. *Lingxian* travels through collaterals to regulate menstruation. Powder disperses stasis; rice drink harmonizes the Stomach. When Stomach Qi is harmonized, cold and heat are balanced, and blood has no stasis or rebellion. Why would irritability and pain not cease, and sudden bloody flooding not stop?
**Jingjie San (New Formula) (Schizonepeta Powder)**
Treats *Beng* and *Lou* with abdominal pain, with a wiry, floating, and rapid pulse.
*Shengdi* (5 qian, charred), *Jingjie* (5 qian, ashed), *Baishao* (1.5 qian, vinegar-fried), *Baizhu* (1.5 qian, charred), *Danggui* (3 qian, vinegar-fried), *Muxiang* (1 qian), *Fuling* (1.5 qian), *Xueyu Hui* (3 qian), *Baizong Hui* (3 qian), *Heye* (3 qian, ashed).
Decoct in water, remove dregs, take warm. Add *Danpi Hui* for blood heat; *Yanhuhu Hui* for blood stasis; *Xiangfu Hui* for Qi stagnation in blood; *Chishizhi* for Qi and Blood collapse; *Sangpi* for cough; *Renshen* for Qi deficiency; *Ejiao Zhu* and fried *Puhuang Hui* for Yin-Blood deficiency; *Paojiantan* with light salt water for Stomach cold.
Labor injury to the Middle, combined with wind pathogen, disrupts the Chong and Ren, causing loss of menstrual blood control, leading to abdominal pain and unceasing *Beng* and *Lou*. Charred *Shengdi* cools blood, nourishes blood, removes dampness from blood to stop bleeding. Ashed *Jingjie* harmonizes blood, dispels wind, removes dampness from collaterals to soothe blood. *Danggui Shen* nourishes blood and returns it to vessels. *Baishaoyao* astringes Yin and harmonizes blood. Charred *Baizhu* strengthens Spleen and dries dampness. *Guangmuxiang* regulates Qi and awakens Spleen. *Xueyu Hui* removes stasis and generates new blood to eliminate *Lou*. *Baizong Hui* astringes blood and stabilizes meridians to settle *Beng*. *Baifuling* leaches dampness and harmonizes Spleen. *Heye Hui* raises Yang and stops bleeding. Decoct in water and take warm. Add *Danpi Hui* for blood heat to cool blood and stop bleeding. Add vinegar-fried *Xiangfu Tan* for blood stasis to regulate Qi in blood and stop bleeding. Add vinegar-fried *Chishizhi* for Qi and Blood slipping to astringe slipping blood, strongly securing the lower part. Add *Sangpi* for cough to descend Lung Qi. Add *Renshen* for deficiency to support Yuan Qi and Yin. Add *Ejiao* for blood deficiency to nourish Ren vessel Yin. Fried *Puhuang Hui* stops Chong vessel bleeding. Add *Paojiang* for Stomach cold to warm the middle palace; cook with light salt water to grasp moving deficient Yang, strengthen Kidney, and secure Chong and Ren deficiency collapse. This is the current method for treating abdominal pain *Beng* and *Lou*. Whether complicated by cold/heat or headache, a single herb *Jingjie* often resolves it, so modifications are not fully listed. Observe syndrome-based regulation in the method, which is always logical.

Grind into powder, take 3 qian per dose, decoct in water, remove dregs, take warm.
Long-term stagnation injures the Liver, impairing its ability to store blood, causing blood to leave vessels and unceasing downward bleeding. *Mianhuazi* disperses stagnant Qi, resolving stagnation and opening knots. *Lianhua Rui* cools Heart Qi, naturally astringing blood and stabilizing meridians. *Honghua* generates new blood and removes old. *Danggui* nourishes blood and returns it to vessels. *Maohua* is light and ascending, stopping bleeding to settle downward bleeding. Powder decocted in water ensures Liver stagnation dissipates, meridians harmonize, Jing Qi restores, blood does not move recklessly. Why would downward bleeding not cease?
