*Daquan* states: The Stomach is the sea of water and grain; the essence derived from water and grain transforms into blood and Qi, nourishing and moistening the Zang-Fu organs. Due to childbirth, the Zang-Fu organs are injured and disturbed. At times, Qi becomes excessively vigorous. When pathogenic Qi invades the intestines and stomach, causing them to become dry and obstructed, the Qi rebels upward, resulting in vomiting, hiccuping, and an inability to eat.
Guo Jizhong stated: The Stomach receives water and grain, while the Spleen governs transportation and transformation, generating blood and Qi to internally moisten the Zang-Fu organs. Following childbirth, the body becomes suddenly deficient. If lochia (postpartum discharge) does not flow smoothly, failed blood enters due to deficiency and scatters within the Spleen and Stomach. If the Spleen is affected by failed blood, abdominal distension occurs; if the Stomach is affected, vomiting occurs. Conversely, if lochia flows excessively, there is insufficient Qi generation, leading to accumulation in the Spleen and Stomach. If the Spleen is affected, it also results in abdominal distension; if the Stomach is affected, it results in vomiting and regurgitation.
Xue Lizhai stated: For postpartum vomiting caused by excessive food intake, use Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) with Shan Zha (Hawthorn Fruit) and Qu (Medicated Leaven). If accompanied by fatigue and overexertion, use Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction). If caused by food stagnation, use Ren Shen Yang Wei Tang (Ginseng Decoction for Nourishing the Stomach). For Spleen and Stomach Qi deficiency, use Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction). For Stomach Qi deficiency and cold, add Pao Jiang (Prepared Ginger) and Mu Xiang (Aucklandia Root). If Cold Water insults Earth (Kidney Yang deficiency with cold water flooding), use Yi Huang San (Yellow Powder to Strengthen the Spleen). If Liver Wood insults Earth (Liver Qi invading the Stomach), use Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) with Sheng Ma (Cimicifuga Rhizome) and Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root). If Ming Men Fire (Fire of the Gate of Life) is deficient and fails to generate Earth, use Ba Wei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill). If vomiting and diarrhea occur with cold hands and feet or abdominal pain, this indicates Yang Qi deficiency and cold; urgently use Fu Zi Li Zhong Tang (Aconite Decoction to Warm the Middle).
Shen Zhai commented: The above three passages describe the syndrome of vomiting after childbirth. Vomiting is a disease of the Middle Jiao. After childbirth, when Blood and Qi are severely depleted, the Central Qi fails to circulate, making one susceptible to injury by diet, thus vomiting is common. While *Daquan* attributes it to dryness, obstruction, and Qi rebellion, and Guo Jizhong attributes it to stagnant lochia, these conditions may occasionally occur within three to four days after delivery. However, the pathogenesis must be carefully examined.
*Daquan* further states: The Lungs govern Qi, and all Zang-Fu organs derive from Qi. After childbirth, Blood and Qi are injured, and all Zang-Fu organs are damaged. If Wind-Cold combines with Qi, causing Qi to rebel upward, symptoms arise. Additionally, if Spleen deficiency leads to the accumulation of Cold, and latent Cold resides in the Stomach, consuming hot food causes a clash between cold and hot energies. This disrupts the smooth flow of Qi, causing Qi to revolt and resulting in hiccups. The Spleen governs the Middle Jiao, serves as the gate of the Three Jiao, and acts as the granary of the Five Zang organs, storing water and grain. If Yin and Yang Qi are deficient, causing the Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi to revolt, this disease arises. The Classics state: Hiccups and belching are generated by Stomach Cold. If medication is ineffective, moxa should be applied to Qi Men (LR14) for three moxibustion cones, which will surely cure the condition.
