"Chanbao Baiwen" (Hundred Questions on Obstetrics) states: When a woman's ten toes feel as if scalded by hot oil, this is caused by the deficiency of Ying and Wei Qi (Defensive and Nutritive Qi), with damp-toxic qi stagnating in the meridians. If it attacks upward to the Heart, it causes heart pain; if it attacks downward to the feet, it causes foot pain, making the toes feel as if burning. This also belongs to the category of Hong Kong Foot (a traditional term for gouty arthritis or lower limb swelling/pain), which corresponds to "Re Jue" (Heat Jue/Cold Extremities due to Heat) mentioned in medical classics.
Shen Zhai commented: Regarding women whose ten toes feel scalded by hot oil, formularies merely classify it as Hong Kong Foot, prescribing formulas such as Huan Tui Wan (Leg-Changing Pill), Wan Ling San (Ten Thousand Spirits Powder), and Huo Xue Dan (Blood-Invigorating Pellet), treating it according to the methods for Hong Kong Foot. This approach is not entirely adequate. All Yang Qi originates from the four limbs; the three Yang meridians and three Yin meridians of the foot all begin at the tips of the toes. The sensation of heat like scalding oil indicates extreme deficiency of Ying and Wei Qi, exhaustion of Yin fluids leading to hyperactive fire, and injury to the three Yin and three Yang meridians of the foot. It is certainly not just Hong Kong Foot. The treatment method should employ large doses of herbs to nourish Kidney Water and benefit Yin, thereby rescuing the body from this raging fire.
"Daqan" (General Collection) states: Humans are born endowing the exquisite Qi of the Five Elements and nurtured by the spiritual Qi of the Five Zang Organs. If Yin and Yang are harmonious and the Zang-Fu organs are strong, how can evil spirits interfere? However, if regulation and care are improper, leading to blood and Qi deficiency, ghostly evils will invade the righteous Qi. The patient may hide and refuse to see others, sometimes speaking and laughing alone, or suddenly weeping bitterly; these are its signs. The pulse may be slow and deep, or rapid and irregular like a bird pecking, or continuous but without rhythm. The facial color remains unchanged, which is also a sign.
"Chanbao Baiwen" states: Humans have five Zang organs and seven Shen (Spirits). When organ Qi is abundant, the Shen is strong, and external evils and ghosts cannot invade. If regulation is improper, leading to blood and Qi deficiency, ghostly evils invade and injure the body. Therefore, women often engage in sexual intercourse with ghosts. The manifestation is an unwillingness to see people, as if confronting someone. Suppose palace maids or widows have previously dreamed of nocturnal intercourse with ghosts; the evil qi bewitches the mind. Over time, this may form a Jia mass (abdominal mass) or even a Ghost Fetus.
Xue Lizhai stated: The above conditions are mostly caused by Seven Emotions (Joy, Anger, Worry, Pensiveness, Sorrow, Fear, Fright) damaging Heart Blood, leaving the Shen unprotected. Using medicines such as An Shen Ding Zhi (Calm the Spirit and Stabilize the Will) can restore righteous Qi, after which the Shen naturally settles. If the pulse fluctuates between large and small, short and long, this is also attributed to ghostly disturbances. One may moxa the Gui Ku acpoint (Ghost Crying Point). Have the patient join both thumbs tightly together and bind them with thread. Moxa seven moxa cones at the junction where flesh and nail meet. If it is truly a ghostly disturbance, the patient will beg to stop the moxibustion, saying, "I am leaving now."
Shen Zhai commented: The above three passages describe the syndrome of women dreaming of sexual intercourse with ghosts. Each of the five Zang organs stores specific aspects: the Heart stores Shen, the Liver stores Hun (Ethereal Soul), the Lungs store Po (Corporeal Soul), the Spleen stores Yi (Intellect), and the Kidneys store Jing (Essence) and Zhi (Will). If Heart Blood is deficient, the Shen has no foundation; if Liver Blood is deficient, the Hun has no attachment; if Lung Qi is deficient, the Po has no return; if the Spleen and Kidneys are deficient, the Yi and Zhi become vague and unable to govern. Once the official of Spiritual Intelligence fails, the Hun and Po leave the body. At night, when ghostly evils take advantage of the deficiency, the dreamer feels panicked as if seeing something—that is actually one's own Hun and Po. Could there really be ghosts or demons interacting with us? Xue Lizhai judged it as Heart Blood damage due to Seven Emotions, leaving the Shen unprotected; he truly revealed the secrets of the disease's origin. As for the conditions recorded in "Zhunseng" and "Gangmu," such as bleeding during intercourse, abnormal male function, and injuries to men, these matters are too obscure, indecent, and vulgar. They seem difficult to diagnose and treat for both patients and physicians, so they are generally omitted.
