Lou Shi said: Xuming Tang (Continuing Life Decoction), Dadouzi Tang (Black Soybean Decoction), and Juqing Gubai San (Juqing Ancient拜 Powder) are formulas for treating Taiyang (Sun Yang channel) and Jueyin (Jade Yin channel) diseases. They are indeed suitable for patients with excess pathogenic factors and floating, string-taut, and forceful pulses. However, for postpartum women with extreme deficiency of blood and qi, it is inappropriate to lightly induce sweating to release the exterior. It is best to treat them with Fangfeng Danggui San.
[Xue Ji] Yuan (convulsive twitching) refers to the spasm and tension of sinews and vessels. Chong (convulsion) refers to the loss of control over the extension and flexion of sinews and vessels. The Classics state: "The Liver governs the sinews and stores blood." Liver Qi belongs to Yang and Fire, while Liver Blood belongs to Yin and Water. The aforementioned conditions arise because excessive loss of Yin blood after childbirth leads to blazing Yang fire, causing the sinews to lack nourishment. Therefore, when sores and ulcers discharge excessive pus, or metal wounds bleed excessively, Yang dissipates along with Yin, often resulting in such conditions. The treatment method should use Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) plus Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan) and Gouteng (Uncaria Rhynchophylla) to generate Yin blood, so that Yang fire will naturally recede and all symptoms will heal spontaneously. If there is no response, one should use Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction), Chuanxiong, Danggui, Mudanpi, and Gouteng to tonify Spleen Earth. Since blood is born from Supreme Yin, and Supreme Yin is Spleen Earth. Thus, after infants suffer from vomiting and diarrhea, if their Spleen and Stomach are damaged and deficient, they also often suffer from this; it is a manifestation of deficiency, with no wind to expel and no phlegm to eliminate. If it belongs to the sinking and collapse of Yang Qi, use Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Middle-Boosting Qi-Enhancing Decoction) plus Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex). If Yang Qi is deficient and ruined, use Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Complete Great Tonifying Decoction) plus Rougui and Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata); there are cases of recovery.
For these types of syndromes, if the limbs feel aversion to cold and the pulse is faint and fine, this is a true image of cold. If the pulse is floating and large, accompanied by fever, irritability, and thirst, this is a false image; only consolidating the root is advisable. If there is powerless convulsions, eyes rolling back, opisthotonos, and sweat flowing like pearls, these are untreatable.
One parturient, due to labor, could not bend her arms. After taking Suhexiang Wan (Styrax Pill), her limbs became flaccid and she sweated profusely like water. I stated that the previous medicine was pungent and aromatic, consuming true Qi, leaving the interstices (Couli) deficient and causing fluids to leak recklessly. First, use Shiquan Dabu Tang plus Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) to solidify the Couli and consolidate true Qi, stopping the sweat immediately. Then assist with Sijunzi Tang to regulate and tonify Yuan Qi, leading to gradual improvement. Finally, use Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) and Dabu Tang (Great Tonifying Decoction) for conditioning until recovery.
Another parturient first experienced distending pain in the chest, hypochondrium, and breasts. Later, due to anger, she developed lockjaw, expectorated phlegm, could not extend her arms, had urinary incontinence, and her left three positions (Cun, Guan, Chi) had string-taut pulses. I stated this was caused by Wind-Fire due to Liver Blood deficiency, failing to nourish the sinews. First, treat with Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder); her arms could then bend and extend. Then use Bugan San (Tonify Liver Powder) and Liuwei Wan (Six Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia); all symptoms completely resolved.
One woman suffered from convulsions and urinary incontinence, spontaneous sweating, red face, sometimes blue face, but normal diet and digestion. Her Liver pulse was string-taut and tight. I said: This is Dryness-Wind-Heat in the Liver channel, named Yuan. The Liver governs urination; its color is green; entering the Heart makes it red. The method should be to nourish Yin blood and clear Liver Fire. Thus, use Jiawei Xiaoyao San. In less than a few doses, all symptoms retreated and she became peaceful.
One woman suffered from this condition due to Postpartum Blood Wind; she stabilized after several doses of Xiao Xuming Tang (Minor Continuing Life Decoction).
Postpartum convulsions due to deficiency and wind invasion are similar to the exterior syndrome of Shanghan (Cold Damage). If the pathogen has not yet entered the interior, it is appropriate to take Fangfeng Tang (Saposhnikovia Decoction).
Fangfeng Tang treats Wind-Deficiency fever, stiffness and spasm of the neck and back, immobility of joints, delirium, erratic behavior without self-awareness. It is also very effective for treating Hongxiangjiao (Gout/Lower Limb Weakness). This medicine is mild and does not damage healthy Qi.

Haizang Yufeng Tang (Hai Zang's Wind-Curing Decoction, i.e., Hua Tuo's Wind-Curing Powder). Jiaojia San (Addition-Decrease Powder, i.e., Danggui San. See Postpartum Stroke section).
Zengsun Chaihu Tang (Modified Bupleurum Decoction) treats abnormal symptoms after childbirth, such as pulling and twitching of hands and feet, flooding of saliva, dizziness, and stuffiness.
Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri, 3 qian), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, 1.2 qian), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparatum, each 1.5 qian), Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae, 1 qian), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 2 qian), Huangqi (Radix Astragali Membranacei, 2.5 qian).
Crush into coarse particles. Divide into two doses. Add 2 cups of water, 3 slices of ginger, and 2 jujubes. Decoct until 0.8 cup remains. Take at any time.
Qinjiao Tang (Gentian Decoction) Use this medicine next to dispel wind pathogens after the previous symptoms have subsided.
Qinjiao (Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae), Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri, each 1.7 qian), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried, 1.3 qian), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae, each 1.2 qian), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparatum, each 1 qian).
Crush into coarse particles. Divide into two portions. For each portion, add 2 cups of water and 3 slices of ginger. Decoct until 0.8 cup remains. Take well after meals.
