The Liver stores Blood, while the Lung governs Qi; Blood serves as Ying (Nutritive) Qi, and Qi serves as Wei (Defensive) Qi. Yin and Yang pair with each other without discrepancy; these two Zang organs (Liver and Lung) are harmonious and follow this pattern. If Blood is deficient and Qi is excessive, conception will certainly not occur; if Blood is abundant and Qi is deficient, pregnancy should ensue. (The Liver stores Blood, belonging to Ying Qi and Yin nature; the Lung governs Qi, belonging to Wei Qi and Yang nature. The pairing of Yin and Yang refers to the matching of husband and wife, where Yin and Yang combine to form essence, thereby enabling procreation. If Blood is scanty and Qi is vigorous, there will be no pregnancy. If Blood is abundant and Qi is weak, pregnancy will occur.) The Chi pulse is faint, the Guan pulse is slippery, and the Chi pulse carries a rapid quality; the pulse flows smoothly and presents a "sparrow-pecking" rhythm. These indicate that the fetal pulse has already manifested its form, although months have passed since conception and the mother remains unaware. (A faint Chi pulse, slippery Guan pulse, and rapid Chi pulse, along with smooth flow and sparrow-pecking characteristics, all signify the obstruction of meridians leading to conception. The aforementioned pulses represent an abundance of Blood and deficiency of Qi. This indicates that the pulse signs of a fetus are already visible.) A rapid pulse on the left hand suggests a male fetus, while a rapid pulse on the right hand suggests a female fetus; the pulse flows smoothly and interconnects, coming and going swiftly. If the Guan pulses on both hands are large and corresponding, it indicates that the fetus has taken shape, which is also consistent with general prior teachings. (A rapid pulse on the left hand implies carrying a boy; a rapid pulse on the right hand implies carrying a girl. When the pulse flows smoothly and rapidly, or when the Guan pulses on both hands are surging and corresponding, it signifies that the fetus has formed.) A "Zong" (Vertical) pulse manifestation on the left hand predicts twins of boys. ("Zong" means the husband conquers the wife. Water conquering Fire, Metal conquering Wood, referred to as the Ghost-Thief pulse, is named "Zong." Manifesting on the left hand, it indicates bearing two male children.) A "Heng" (Horizontal) pulse manifestation on the right hand predicts twins of girls. ("Heng" means the wife conquers the husband. Fire conquering Water, Wood conquering Metal, referred to as the Overcoming pulse, is named "Heng." Manifesting on the right hand, it indicates bearing two female children.) An "Ni" (Reverse) pulse manifestation on the left hand predicts three sons. ("Ni" means the child conquers the mother. Water conquering Metal, Fire conquering Wood, referred to as the Generated pulse, is named "Ni." Manifesting on the left hand, it indicates bearing three male children.) A "Shun" (Smooth) pulse manifestation on the right hand predicts three daughters. ("Shun" means the mother conquers the child. Metal conquering Water, Wood conquering Fire, referred to as the Generating pulse, is named "Shun." Manifesting on the right hand, it indicates bearing three female children.) If the Cun, Guan, and Chi positions all correspond, it predicts one son and one daughter with distinct characteristics. If the size and speed of the pulses at Cun, Guan, and Chi correspond, it is the pulse sign for carrying one boy and one girl. (It is said that the area before the Guan is Yang, and behind is Yin. Corresponding Yin and Yang pulses result in carrying one boy and one girl.) Sometimes, the fetus may die while the mother survives, or the mother may perish while the fetus lives. (These two lines of text do not provide a method to distinguish between the survival of the mother and fetus.) If the pulses in the three positions flow smoothly and freely, with Slippery and Rapid qualities alternating and appearing strong and rhythmic ("Ti Ti"), the pulse of Excess Yang and Deficiency Yin becomes clear; this indicates rebellious Qi filling the chest. (If the Cun, Guan, and Chi positions all flow smoothly, appearing strong, rhythmic, Slippery, and Rapid, they represent a pulse of Excess Yang and Deficiency Yin. This primarily indicates rebellious Qi in pregnant women, causing discomfort throughout the chest.) A Floating and Large pulse on the Left Hand Taiyang position suggests a male fetus. (The Cun position of the left hand corresponds to Taiyang; a Floating and Large pulse here indicates carrying a male.) A Deep and Fine pulse on the Right Hand Taiyin position suggests a female fetus. (The Cun position of the right hand corresponds to Taiyin; a Deep and Fine pulse here indicates carrying a female.) All Yang pulses indicate a male, and all Yin pulses indicate a female; keep this distinction clear in your fingers for long-term reference. (All Yang pulses, such as Floating, Large, Rapid, Slippery, and Excess, suggest carrying a male. All Yin pulses, such as Deep and Fine, suggest carrying a female.) If the pulses at Cun, Guan, and Chi are equally Deep upon pressing without interruption, and the Chi pulse does not cease upon lifting and pressing, it confirms true pregnancy. (When the pulses at Cun, Guan, and Chi are truly equal in depth and quality, without interruption upon lifting or pressing, and the Chi pulse continues without ceasing, it indicates a truly pregnant woman.) The husband conquering the wife creates "Zong" Qi like fog. (The Classics state: "Zong" means the husband conquers the wife. Water conquering Fire, Metal conquering Wood, is the Ghost-Thief pulse. "Zong Qi Fog" refers to dew or mist, indicating up and down movement. It means the husband's Yang Qi conquers the wife's Yin Qi; these two Qi move up and down together, like fog and dew, nourishing and forming the fetus.) The wife conquering the husband creates "Heng" Qi assisting. ("Heng" means the wife conquers the husband. See previous note. It refers to the assisting horizontal Qi from the sides.) The child conquering the mother involves "Ni" Qi participating. ("Ni" means the child conquers the mother. It means the child's Qi invades the mother's Qi, and rebellious Qi participates.) The mother conquering the child involves "Shun" Qi protecting. (When the mother's Qi conquers the child's Qi, it is "Shun" Qi, providing protection. Generally, the fetus gathers Zong, Heng, Ni, and Shun four types of Qi to nourish itself, only then taking shape.) When the fetal days are complete and the fetus aggregates, the mother may have fever and chaotic pulses but suffer no illness. (When a woman is five months pregnant, the fetal days are complete, and the fetus aggregates. The mother's body may become hot, and her pulse may appear restless and chaotic; this is not a sign of disease or suffering. At five months, the fetus is formed, having received Fire essence and Qi; thus, body heat and chaotic pulses indicate health, not illness.) Sweating, loss of appetite, and vomiting occur; spirit and essence gather within. (Referring to pregnancy, the fetus takes shape by receiving the refined essence of the Five Elements and nourishes the mother via two meridians. By the fifth month of pregnancy, although the fetus is formed, its Qi is not yet fully prepared. Thus, fetal Qi is unstable, rushing upward to the heart and chest, causing sweating, anorexia, and vomiting, known as "E Zu" (Morning Sickness), commonly called "Xuan Fan." The mother craves sour and pungent flavors, attributing this to fetal Qi.) A Slippery and Rapid pulse that does not scatter indicates three months of pregnancy. (Pregnancy at three months is called "Shi Tai" (Initial Fetus). At this stage, the form is not yet fixed, and the Pericardium meridian nourishes it. Hence, the pulse appears Slippery and Rapid and smooth, indicating less Qi and more Blood. A non-scattering pulse indicates abundant Blood and Qi, marking the initial formation of the fetus.) A merely Rapid and non-scattering pulse indicates five months of pregnancy. (If the pulse is merely Rapid and numerous without scattering, it indicates a mother who is five months pregnant.) A String-tight, Firm-strong, or Slippery pulse indicates safety; a Deep-fine and Micro pulse leads to the springs (death). (For pregnant women, the pulse should be String-tight, Firm-strong, or Slippery, indicating auspiciousness. If it is Deep, fine, and Micro, meaning the pulse does not correspond to the condition, it is considered fatal. Although earlier texts mentioned Taiyin being Deep and Fine, and all Yin pulses indicating females, this seems contradictory; however, it refers to the fact that if all three positions are not Deep, fine, or Micro, the situation differs.)
