Postpartum "Blowing Milk" (Chui Ru) occurs when a baby's breath enters the breast during nursing, causing milk stasis, accumulation, and resulting in swelling and pain. If not treated promptly, it often develops into an abscess. One should quickly administer Gualou San (Trichosanthes Powder), apply powder of Arisaema Cum Bile (Nanxing) externally, and massage the area to disperse the nodules. In severe cases, Lianqiao Jinbei Jian (Forsythia and Fritillaria Decoction) is most effective.
Gualou San (see *Ancient Formulas of Furen Gui*) treats swelling and pain caused by Blowing Milk.
Trichosanthis Fructus (Gualou, one fruit)
Boswelliae Carthartici Resina (Ruxiang, two qian)
Decoct these with wine for oral administration. Externally, grind Nanxing into powder, mix with warm water, and apply.
Lianqiao Jinbei Jian (see *New Formulas Eight Arrays · Yin Array*) treats heat-toxin abscesses in the Yang aspect, whether located in the zang-fu organs, lungs/diaphragm, chest, or breasts; this formula is optimal. For severe cases, continuous administration over several doses ensures recovery without exception.
Lonicerae Japonicae Flos (Jinyinhua)
Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus (Beimu, earth-grown is better)
Taraxaci Herba (Pugongying)
Prunellae Spica (Xiakucao) [Each: three qian]
Spatholobi Caulis (Hongteng) [Seven to eight qian]
Forsythiae Fructus (Lianqiao) [One liang or five to seven qian]
Decoct two bowls of good wine until one bowl remains, then drink. Rest warmly for a short period after ingestion. If there is excessive fire, irritability, thirst, and breast swelling, add Trichosanthis Radix (Tianhuafen). If there is yang-toxin with internal heat, or lesions on the neck, decocting with water is also acceptable.
Postpartum "Jealous Milk" (Du Ru) occurs due to lack of infant suckling or inability of the infant to nurse, causing residual milk to accumulate and swell; or because the woman's qi and blood are vigorous, leading to breast distension, swelling, pain, accompanied by aversion to cold and fever. If not relieved by suckling to unblock the flow, it will inevitably lead to abscess formation. If the swelling does not subside, stir-fried Malta (Maiya) two to three liang can be decocted in water and taken orally, causing immediate resolution.
Another prescription: Use Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) one liang and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) one qian, decoct in water and take.
Another prescription: Treats swelling and pain from Blowing Milk and Breast Carbuncle. Use Hemerocallis Radix (Xuancgen), mash it, take with wine, and apply the dregs to the affected area.
Xiu Zhen Fang: Remove skin from Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus (Zhuya Zaojiao), honey-roast and powder it, take one qian with wine. There is also a poem: "How to treat blowing milk? Mix soot from burnt soap pod with clam powder, blend with a cup of hot wine, and you shall laugh within moments."
If swelling and pain are severe with excess heat-toxin, it is advisable to first treat with Lianqiao Jinbei Jian, which is excellent.
Li Zhai's method states: Women's breast carbuncles belong to heat-toxin in the Gallbladder and Stomach fu-organs, with qi and blood stagnation. Thus, initially, swelling and pain appear on the body surface, with redness of the skin. The patient exhibits exterior fever, alternating chills and fever, aversion to cold with headache, irritability, and thirst requiring drinking. Treat with Renshen Baidu San (Ginseng Detoxification Powder), Shenxiao Gualou San (Miraculous Efficacy Trichosanthes Powder), or Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free Wanderer Powder); the swelling will naturally dissipate. If after several days pus forms and ruptures, thick pus flows out, and self-healing occurs once the pus is exhausted. However, if qi and blood are deficient, or if detoxifying/clearing drugs were mistakenly used, leading to non-convergence, thin pus, and a large pulse, it is difficult to treat. Breast cancer (Ru Yan) belongs to the Liver and Spleen zang-organs, caused by depression and anger leading to qi and blood deficiency. Initially, small nodules form inside the breast, with normal skin color. The patient experiences internal heat, night fever, heat in the five centers, limb fatigue and emaciation, and irregular menstruation. Treat with Jiawei Xiaoyao San, Jiawei Guipi Tang (Modified Restore the Spleen Decoction), or Shenxiao Gualou San; they often dissipate spontaneously. If accumulated over time and gradually enlarging, becoming red like rock, weeping fluid, and internally ulcerating into deep cavities, it becomes hard to treat. Using the aforementioned Guipi Tang and other medicines can prolong life. Mistaken use of attacking/draining methods leads to imminent danger. Generally, for breast conditions: if caused by anger, soothe the Liver and clear heat; if accompanied by chills and fever, release the exterior and scatter pathogens; if swelling and pain are severe, clear Liver heat, resolve toxicity, and apply garlic-separated moxibustion. If no pus forms or pus does not rupture, tonify qi and blood as the primary approach; if non-converging or pus is thin, tonify the Spleen and Stomach as the primary approach; if pain recurs after pus discharge or chills/fever appear, tonify qi and blood as the primary approach; if afternoon tidal fever or internal heat occurs, nourish blood as the primary approach. If appetite is poor or vomiting occurs, tonify the Stomach as the primary approach; if food is hard to digest or diarrhea occurs, tonify the Spleen as the primary approach; if swelling and pain result from overwork, tonify qi and blood as the primary approach; if swelling and pain result from anger, nourish Liver blood as the primary approach. For milk blocked by infant breath, suckling and massage are required to unblock and disperse; if an abscess forms, treat according to previous methods. Tidal fever and evening fever are also primarily treated with the aforementioned medicines. Generally, men suffer from Kidney and Liver depletion due to sexual exhaustion, while women suffer from Liver and Spleen damage due to depression and anger; practitioners must examine this carefully. Pregnant women may suffer from this condition, termed "Internal Blowing"; although the cause is the same, medications must not harm the fetus.
Lianqiao Jinbei Jian (see Blowing Milk section)
Renshen Baidu San (see *Ancient Formulas Eight Arrays · San Array*), also known as Baidu San. Treats seasonal cold damage and epidemics, aversion to cold with high fever, wind-dampness, wind vertigo, stiff neck, and body pain. Suitable for all ages. Essential for regions like Lingnan with miasma, during epidemic outbreaks, in damp environments, or for symptoms like jiaogong (foot weakness) and atrophy. Take three times daily until effective.
Panax Ginseng (Renshen)
Poria (Fuling)
Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhiqiao)
Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao)
Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong)
Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo)

Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng) [Equal parts]
Decoct with one and a half zhong of water and three slices of ginger. Alternatively, make into fine powder and take with boiling water.
Shenxiao Gualou San (see *Ancient Formulas of Waike Qian*) treats breast carbuncles and all initial-stage carbuncles and sores. Swelling and pain disappear immediately; upon pus formation, it ruptures; upon pus discharge, healing occurs. Many formulas treat carbuncles, but only this one is miraculous. It is especially effective for scrofula (Luoli) and toxic sores. Suitable for all residual toxins from carbuncles and sores.
Trichosanthis Fructus (Gualou, one fruit, mashed)
Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, washed with wine)
Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Sheng Gancao) [Each: half liang]
Boswelliae Carthartici Resina (Ruxiang)
Myrrha (Moyao) [Each: one qian]
Decoct with wine and take. Wait a while and take again. If unable to drink alcohol, decoct with half wine and half water. If ineffective after several doses, combine with qi- and blood-tonifying medicines. If Liver channel blood deficiency causes nodules that do not dissipate, assist with Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction), Chaihu, Shengma, Baizhu, and Fuling. If Liver and Spleen qi and blood are weak, assist with Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction), Xiong, Danggui, Chaihu, and Shengma. If melancholy injures the Spleen causing qi and blood deficiency, assist with Guipi Tang.
