Chen's Ermu San (Two Mother Powder, see "Ancient Formulas in Furen Gui") is used to treat postpartum hot blood rushing upward and stagnating in the Lung Meridian, causing coughing and panting.
The herbs include: Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu), Fritillariae Bulbus (Beimu), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Persicae Semen (Taoren), Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren) (all skin and tips removed), Poria (Baifuling).
Mix the above herbs in equal proportions. Take five qian per dose, add fresh ginger, decoct with water, and take orally.
Erwei Renshen Suxue Yin (Two-Ingredient Ginseng and Suxue Decoction, see "Ancient Formulas in Furen Gui") is used to treat postpartum blood stasis entering the Lungs, causing coughing and rapid breathing.
The herbs include: Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) (one liang), Sappan Lignum (Sumu) (two liang).
Prepare as one dose, decoct with water, and take orally. If the symptoms have resolved, use Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) to tonify the Spleen and Stomach. If black qi appears around the mouth and nose, urgently use this formula adding five qian of Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi); there are cases of survival from this approach.
Postpartum lochia that does not stop: if caused by Blood Heat, Baoyin Jian (Protect the Yin Decoction) or Qinghua Yin (Clear and Transform Decoction) are suitable; if caused by damage to the collaterals of the Chong and Ren Mai (Penetrating Vessel and Conception Vessel) leading to continuous bleeding, Guyin Jian (Secure the Yin Decoction) with modifications is suitable; if caused by deficiency of Liver and Spleen Qi failing to contain the blood, Shoupi Jian (Longevity Spleen Decoction) or Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) are suitable. If both Qi and Blood are deficient and blood leaks continuously like dilute fluid, Dabu Yuanjian (Great Tonification of the Origin Decoction) or Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Complete Great Tonification Decoction) are suitable. If anger injures the Liver causing blood to fail to be stored, Jiawei Siwu Tang (Modified Four Substances Decoction) is suitable. If Wind-Heat is in the Liver causing blood to leak downward, Yiwei Fangfeng San (Single-Ingredient Saposhnikovia Powder) is suitable.
A hemostatic formula: Use Polygoni Multiflori Caulis (Puhuang) two liang, decoct with water and take in one dose.

Postpartum tetanus (Fa Jing) is a syndrome of severe deficiency of Yin Blood. The manifestations include opisthotonos (backward arching of the back), eyes staring upward, stiffness and rigidity of the four limbs, and body convulsions. Although in Shanghan (Cold Damage) studies there is a distinction between Gang Jing (Stiff Tetanus) and Rou Jing (Flaccid Tetanus), ultimately these are all diseases of Blood Dryness and Blood Withering, primarily governed by the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian and Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. This is because the Bladder and Kidney are interior-exterior pairs; the Kidney governs Essence and Blood, while the Taiyang Meridian connects to the head, eyes, neck, and back, hence presenting such symptoms. Regarding the etiology, this condition arises after errors in Shanghan treatment such as excessive sweating leading to loss of fluids, or drastic purging leading to loss of Yin, or following ulcers, pus and blood discharge, or severe diarrhea. Therefore, in postpartum cases, it is also due to excessive blood loss, or excessive sweating and purging, representing extreme depletion of Yuan Qi (Original Qi) and exhaustion of Blood. Thus, upon encountering this syndrome, one must quickly differentiate Yin and Yang, greatly tonify Qi and Blood, using formulas such as Dabu Yuanjian (Great Tonification of the Origin Decoction), Liyin Jian (Regulate Yin Decoction), or Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Complete Great Tonification Decoction), to preserve life. If mistakenly treated as Wind-Phlegm and administered dispersing or resolving agents, death is inevitable.
