According to the *Shengji Zonglun* (General Treatise on Holy Relief): The syndrome involves the Lung Meridian being invaded by Wind-Cold, leading to coughing. This causes stagnation of Qi in the Lung, accumulation of cold blood, and generation of phlegm, resulting in internal heat within the Zang-Fu organs. Consequently, the child experiences restless sleep, manifesting as a sawing sound in the throat.
If a child presents with these symptoms, they may administer Tongguan Meihua Yinzi (Pass-Through Plum Blossom Decoction), Banxia Wan (Pinellia Pill), Baoshou San (Longevity-Preserving Powder), Xiaoguiming San (Little Return-to-Life Powder), and Ji Ji San (Muscle-Releasing Powder). After three doses, peace will naturally be restored. However, if signs resembling Jia masses (abdominal masses) are observed, accompanied by a sawing sound in the throat, this indicates the Lung has been affected by Wind pathogenic factors. Symptoms include rapid upper-body panting, cyanosis of the face and lips, deep depression under the neck, sticky phlegm saliva resembling glue or lacquer, foul腥 odor in the mouth, upward reversal of foul qi, and retraction of the tongue. These are all considered incurable critical conditions.
Meihua Yinzi (Plum Blossom Decoction): Treats infantile Jing Re (Startling Heat), Chao Re (Tidal Heat), Xu Re (Deficiency Heat), and Ji Re (Accumulation Heat); heat harbored in the Five Viscera; excess heat in the Upper Jiao; heat in the palms and soles; excessive phlegm in the throat; complexion that is either red or white; teething during Bian Zheng (Transformation and Evaporation); runny clear nose; rapid breathing with Liver-Lung heat congestion; red eyes and coughing. It also treats cases where the infant is startled by objects, causing night crying, restless sleep, mental fright, fear, and irritability. Furthermore, it is suitable for cases where Shang Han (Cold Damage) has gradually improved but residual heat remains uneliminated. Administer three doses. Regular use calms the Heart, suppresses startling, transforms phlegm, reduces fever, calms the spirit, eliminates future hazards, and opens the throat passages.
Ingredients: Nan Penglsha (Southern Borax), Mayaxiao (Sodium Nitrate, separately ground), Mangxiao (Mirabilite, separately ground), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, each 0.5 liang), Renshen (Ginseng Root, 1 liang), Chen Sha (Cinnabar, 2.5 qian), Pian Nao (Borneol), Shexiang (Musk, 1 zi).
Grind the above eight ingredients into fine powder, store in a porcelain vessel. When encountering this syndrome, take one spoonful, mixed with Maidong Tang (Ophiopogon Decoction). For panting and coughing, mix with Sangbaipi Tang (Morus Bark Decoction); for regular maintenance, mix with Bohe Tang (Mint Decoction).
Wu Ziyu Formula: Baixinshi (White Arsenic Stone, 1 zi, processed with bean flour by grinding and roasting), Sheng Nanxing (Arisaema Rhizome, raw), Kufan (Alum, calcined, each 1 qian), Eguan Shi (Calcareous Sinter), Pengsha (Borax, each 0.5 qian), Lv Dou Fen (Mung Bean Starch), Xionghuang (Realgar, each 1.5 qian).
Grind into powder, make pills the size of radish seeds using paste. Swallow five pills before bed with cold tea.
Banxia Wan (Pinellia Pill): Treats disordered Lung Qi, coughing with panting and fullness, obstruction by phlegm saliva, hardness and fullness below the heart, shortness of breath and stifling sensation, wind-stagnation with phlegm-excess, dizziness of head and eyes, difficulty in swallowing and throat, vomiting and nausea, mental confusion, palpitations with facial heat, and thick sticky nasal discharge and sputum. All these symptoms are treated by this formula.
Ingredients: Bai Fan (Alum, calcined, 2.5 liang 5 qian), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, 3 liang, washed with boiling water to remove slipperiness, soaked in ginger juice overnight).
Grind into fine powder, use natural ginger juice to make pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take ten to twenty pills per dose, after meals and before sleep, with Ginger Decoction. For children, make pills the size of hemp seeds.
Baoshou San (Longevity-Preserving Powder): See Question 50.
Xiaoguiming San (Little Return-to-Life Powder): Treats infantile Shang Han during Bian Zheng, tidal heat, startling heat, open-mouth breathing, runny clear nose, coughing, generalized warm-fever, phlegm in the throat. It addresses the aforementioned Shang Han syndromes, reduces startling heat, settles phlegm, calms the spirit, and prevents various diseases.
Ingredients: Baifuling (Poria, white), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, each 0.5 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root, 3 qian), Chen Sha (Cinnabar, 2 qian), Pian Nao (Borneol), Shexiang (Musk, each a small amount).
Grind the above seven ingredients into powder. Take half a qian per dose, mixed with Bohe Tang (Mint Decoction).
Ji Ji San (Muscle-Releasing Powder): Treats infantile Shang Feng (Wind Cold) with facial redness and generalized high fever, presenting with the aforementioned symptoms. Combined with Ren Shen San (Ginseng Powder), the fever subsides. Observe the severity of the condition. If the illness is mild, the pulse is not surging and rapid, the face is not deeply red, and there is no aggravation of irritability, yet the child moans and speaks deliriously, this is a mild, treatable syndrome. Simply administer this formula.
Ingredients: Renshen (Ginseng Root), Gouteng (Uncaria Rhynchophylla), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Gancao (Licorice Root), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome, each 3 qian), Tingli (Descurainia Seed, 1 qian, stir-fried), Baifuling (Poria, white, 1 qian), Xingren (Apricot Seed, 49 pieces, peeled and de-husked), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, dosage unspecified), Mahuang (Ephedra Stem, nodes removed, each 4 qian).
Cut into coarse powder. Take two qian per dose, with one jujube, one cup of water, decocted to half a cup. In times of epidemic Shang Han, if administering this medicine first, one must carefully distinguish the syndrome. If the face is cyanotic and pale, the earlobes, knees, feet, and sacrum are cold as ice, the body is warm-feverish, and there is maniacal restlessness, delirious speech, and laughing in dreams, this is the applicable syndrome. If children suffer from Shang Han etc., and after taking Ji Ji San the fever gradually subsides, subsequently one may sequentially administer Da Guiming San (Great Return-to-Life Powder), Baoshou San (Longevity-Preserving Powder), Qingfen Baizhu San (Calomel and Atractylodes Powder), etc., for regulation.
Baiyu Wan (White Jade Pill): Benefits the diaphragm, descends phlegm saliva, removes persistent chest and heart oppression, and treats coughing with excessive phlegm.
Ingredients: Nanxing (Arisaema Rhizome), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), Baifan (Alum, raw, each 2.5 qian).
Grind into powder. Take seven apricot seeds (peeled and de-husked) and one croton seed (Badou), grind together uniformly. Use peeled ginger juice to make pills the size of millet grains. Take ten to twenty pills per dose, with Ginger Decoction, at any time.
