Dysentery was anciently called "Zhi Xia" (Stagnant Downward Flow), and it mostly occurs at the end of summer and early autumn. What is the reason for this? It is because internally there is accumulation from raw and cold foods, and externally there is conflict between summer-heat and dampness; this is how the disease arises. When the Spleen and Stomach are disharmonious, excessive consumption of raw and cold items causes stagnation in the intestines and stomach, preventing digestion; furthermore, interference from wind-cold, summer-heat, and dampness pathogens leads to prolonged retention, resulting in this illness. Generally speaking, dysentery cannot occur without stagnation. The term "Li" (Dysentery) implies "Li" (To promote flow). In the early stage of the disease, one must first use purgative medicines to cleanse the intestines and stomach, allowing toxic factors to be excreted outward. One must absolutely not use tonifying or astringent medicines initially, as this would cause stagnation to remain and prevent the expulsion of toxins, leading to the solidification of heat-toxins and the generation of malignant symptoms. This is why it is said that "dysentery should not be stopped." If purgation is indicated but not performed, the Spleen and Stomach will become increasingly deficient over time, making further purgation inadvisable.
There are eight types of dysentery symptoms: Cold Dysentery, Heat Dysentery, Gan Dysentery, Jing Dysentery, Mixed Cold-Heat Dysentery, Resting Dysentery, Gu Du Dysentery, and Jin Kou Dysentery (Throat-Sealing Dysentery). Cold dysentery presents primarily with white discharge, while heat dysentery presents primarily with red discharge. I believe this distinction is insufficient; one should differentiate based on whether the hands and feet are warm (indicating Heat) or cold (indicating Cold). Treating according to this differentiation ensures accuracy. Gan dysentery involves yellow and white stool with irregular bowel movements; Jing dysentery presents with green stool and alternating chills and fever; mixed cold-heat dysentery features intermingled red and white stool; resting dysentery presents with black stool resembling fish entrails, recurring after remission; [Locking Anus] dysentery involves retained stagnation failing to pass, constipation, painful straining, crying, anorexia, and foul-smelling feces; Gu Du dysentery presents with purple-black stool.
There are also three malignant syndromes: First, Jin Kou Dysentery (Throat-Sealing Dysentery), where toxins invade the Stomach causing dry retching and inability to eat; second, Gua Chang Dysentery (Intestine-Scraping Dysentery), characterized by frequent dripping of fresh blood from the anus, deep black discoloration of the anal opening which appears terrifying upon dilation, abdominal pain, tenesmus, and rectal prolapse sensation; third, Hua Chang Dysentery (Slippery Intestine Dysentery), featuring frequent day and night diarrhea where food passes straight through undigested. If these conditions arise, unless treated with utmost sincerity and skill, fewer than one or two out of ten may survive. Thirst and craving for alcohol in chronic dysentery indicates exhaustion of intestinal and stomach fluids. The treatment principle is: warm the cold, clear the heat, harmonize the Stomach, warm the Spleen, widen the intestines, and regulate Qi. Prognosis: survival if body temperature is normal and pulse is fine and minute; death if body is hot and pulse is floating and large; death if the tongue is black and sweating occurs.
Ganying Wan (Miracle Response Pill): Treats all forms of food stagnation, bloody and non-bloody dysentery, abdominal pain, and tenesmus. Suitable for both men and women. This medicine acts like a general breaking through enemy lines to quell chaos and restore peace, possessing the power to revive the dying. Used appropriately, it is miraculous.

Processing of Ba Dou: Before March, remove shells, take the kernels, discard those with dried oil. Grind finely, wrap in paper, and press to remove oil. Grind again, press again.
