Mr. Wu Zhonghan Hanyuan suffered from intestinal wind bleeding (bleeding due to wind pathogen in the intestines) and slight abdominal pain. The pulse was short at the left Cun position, slippery at the right Guan position, and wiry-large at both Chi positions. He was treated with Diyu (Sanguisorbae Radix), Huaihua (Stemonae Rhizoma), and Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus) each at 3 qian; Jingjiesui (Schizonepetae Spica), Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Qinghao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba), and Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) each at 1.5 qian; and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) at 2 qian. He recovered after two doses.
Lord Da Zhushi Anjie had phlegm-fire in the Spleen and Lung meridians, and damp-heat in the Middle Jiao. This damp-heat flowed into the Bladder, causing Lin and Zhuo (dysuria and turbid urine). There was pain before urination, and the urine was dribbling and incomplete. The pulse was short and weak at the left Cun, wiry-large at the Guan, slippery at the right Cun and Guan, and large-surging at both Chi positions, with all six positions being rapid. The method should first clear the phlegm-fire of the Upper and Middle Jiao, then raise the clear and descend the turbid, so that in the future there would be no suffering of bone and joint pain. Initially, Bixie Fenqing Yin (Bixie Decoction for Clarifying the Turbid) was given with Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), and Huashi (Talcum). The Lin and Zhuo symptoms were reduced by half. It was then changed to Erchen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) with Shanzhi, Huangbai, Huashi, Luosike (Concha Viverrae), and Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) to remove damp-heat and eliminate phlegm in the Middle Jiao. Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), and Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) were added to raise the clear Qi. He recovered after four doses.
Old Man Wu Guanzhan Shaoxi originally had Jiujī (alcohol accumulation) and was frequently injured by anger, causing fire in the right hypochondrium to rush upward and cause pain, accompanied by tinnitus, vertigo, and difficult, dry bowel movements. The pulse was slippery-rapid at the right Cun and Guan, and wiry on the left. He was treated with Danggui Longhui Wan (Angelica Dragon's Gall Pills) plus Niudan Nanting (Arisaema cum Bile Bovis) and recovered.
The wife of Wu Xiaoliao Qiuquan contracted a cold after dysentery, and her menstruation happened to arrive. She presented with high fever, thirst, generalized body pain, fullness and oppression in the chest and diaphragm with irritability, slight headache, deafness, diarrhea, a white tongue coating, and a pulse of seven or eight beats per breath, chaotic and disordered. This is a combined disease of the Three Yang meridians, specifically Chunwen (Spring-Warmth disease). Contemporary physicians mistakenly diagnosed it as Loudi Shanghan (Shanghan with leakage-type dysentery) and deemed it untreatable. I said: Although the condition is critical, there are cases where treatment fails and death occurs, but never has a case recovered without treatment. Moreover, administer medicines for the Three Yang meridians, carefully observe the signs and responses, and act according to the timing. Use Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) at 3 qian, Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) and Baishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) each at 2 qian, Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Jiu Qin (Scutellariae Radix prepared with wine), and Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia) each at 1 qian, Tianhuafen (Trichosanthis Radix) at 8 fen, and Zhi Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata) and Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) each at 5 fen. After taking the medicine, she felt only cold throughout the body like ice, especially on the face and limbs, and all six pulses disappeared. The whole family and physicians sighed, thinking she had died. I alone said: This is not a death sign. It is likely that at midnight, when Yin reaches its extreme and Yang begins to generate, the momentum desires to produce sweat, similar to how heaven and earth become yin (dark/overcast) before rain. Lord Qiuquan was half-believing and half-doubting, and other physicians laughed and left upon hearing this. At the fourth watch (around 1-3 AM), she indeed experienced chills followed by sweating, soaking her clothes and bedding. Her limbs, body, and face gradually warmed, her spirit became clear, and she asked for porridge. The whole family rejoiced, considering it a rebirth. The next day, only deafness remained, and there was loud rumbling in the abdomen. The pulse approached six beats per breath. It was changed to Chai Ling Tang (Bupleurum and Poria Decoction) with Wumei (Mume Fructus), and she recovered after two doses.
