The eldest son of Wu Jiannan suffered from Heart-Spleen pain (pain in the epigastric and splenic regions). This was caused by fatigue and overexertion; every time the pain occurred, it would stop immediately upon eating palatable food to press against the stomach. He had sores on both legs. The pulse on the right side was slippery, while the pulse on the left was weak. A prescription was made using Bai Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) 3 qian, Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) 1.5 qian, Bai Jili (Fructus Tribuli) and Bi Huma (Sesamum indicum var. nigrum) each 1 qian, Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) and Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri) each 8 fen, Shichangpu (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii) and Baifuling (Poria) each 6 fen. After taking four doses, the pain ceased. Subsequently, Xiao Jianzhong Tang (Minor Construct the Middle Decoction) was used, with Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi Cassiae) removed, and Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri), Cang'erzi (Fructus Xanthii), Bai Jili (Fructus Tribuli), and Heshouwu (Radix Polygoni Multiflori Preparata) added. Honey pills were prepared and taken, after which the sores healed shortly thereafter.
Another son of Wu Jiannan, aged eight, originally suffered from Ganji Chongtong (infantile malnutrition with abdominal pain due to parasites). Because pediatric treatments involved excessive purgation, his Spleen Qi became deficient, and his complexion appeared greenish. Qipi Wan (Spleen-Enlightening Pill) was used as the main formula, containing Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), Fuling (Poria), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Bai Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Shanzha (Fructus Crataegi), Zexie (Rhizoma Alismatis), Yiyiren (Semen Coicis), Baibiandou (Semen Phaseoli Radiati), Shijunzi (Semen Quisqualis), Lushui (Aloe), and Jizhenpi (Gizzard Lining of Gallus gallus domesticus). Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) paste was used as a binder to form pills. One dose resulted in recovery.
A clan niece, just eight years old, had an abdomen protruding higher than her chest, fever, flushed face, coughing, and vomiting, sometimes even spitting up blood. The Guan position of the right pulse was slippery, large, and forceful. This was caused by Wind-Heat pathogens entangling between the Spleen and Lung. A prescription was made using Huashi (Talcum) 2 qian, Pipaye (Folium Eriobotryae) 1 qian, Maiya (Fructus Hordei Germinatus), Tianma (Rhizoma Gastrodiae), and Banxiaqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata cum Buxo) each 8 fen, Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus), Zhike (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), and Qingpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride) each 5 fen. Taken as a water decoction, the fever subsided, the cough stopped, and vomiting improved significantly.
An elder brother of the same surname, HT, nearly fifty years old, suffered from pain in the left hypochondrium, spasms of the hands and feet, inability to walk, and weak pulses in both hands. A prescription was made using Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Bai Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Mugua (Fructus Chaenomelis), Shihu (Caulis Dendrobii), Cang'erzi (Fructus Xanthii), and Gouqizi (Fructus Lycii) each 1 qian, Yiyiren (Semen Coicis) 2 qian, Renshen (Radix Ginseng) and Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae) each 7 fen, Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) and Baijiezi (Semen Sinapis Albis) each 6 fen, Honghua (Flos Carthami) 3 fen. Taken as a water decoction, he passed two sheng of black stool that night, then slept, and the pain and spasms alleviated. The prescription was changed to Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), and Bai Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) each 1.2 qian, Yiyiren (Semen Coicis) 4 qian, Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae), Mugua (Fructus Chaenomelis), and Shihu (Caulis Dendrobii) each 8 fen, Honghua (Flos Carthami) and Jiu Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae Preparated with Wine) each 5 fen. Black material was still passed in the stool that night. From then on, his spirit and energy improved, and sleep and appetite stabilized. Five days later, due to anger and dietary injury, severe spasms occurred in the right hand and left foot, with pain in the left thigh, retraction making extension difficult, and extreme pain upon extension. There was extreme pain in the left hypochondrium and short urine. A prescription was made using Shanzha (Fructus Crataegi), Qingpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride), Fangji (Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Banxiaqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata cum Buxo), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Yiren (Semen Coicis), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Cang'erzi (Fructus Xanthii), Duzhong (Cortex Eucommiae), and Shihu (Caulis Dendrobii), with Gualou (Fructus Trichosanthis) as the sovereign herb. After taking this, the left hypochondriac pain stopped, and the right hand ceased spasming. Only pain remained in the tendons of the inner left thigh; one spasm would cause the knee to touch the mouth, which was a peculiar occurrence. Therefore, the prescription was changed to Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Yiyiren (Semen Coicis), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri), Bai Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Gouteng (Uncaria rhynchophylla), Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae), Mutong (Caulis Akebiae), and Shanzhizi (Fructus Gardeniae), after which all pains and spasms resolved, and thirst disappeared. With only this method for regulation for five more days, he was able to walk freely out of the house.
