The *Suwen: Liujie Zangxiang Lun* (Six Sections on the Manifestations of the Viscera) states: "When the Liver receives blood, it can see." The *Suwen: Xuanming Wuqi Pian* (Chapter on the Manifestation of the Five Qi) states: "Prolonged visual strain injures the Blood." The *Suwen: Qijue Lun* (Chapter on Qi Reversal) states: "When Gallbladder heat transfers to the Brain, it causes nasal congestion and rhinorrhea (Biyuan), which may transmit into epistaxis (Nümie) and blurred vision with difficulty in opening the eyes." The *Suwen: Miao Ci Lun* (Chapter on Miraculous Puncture) states: "If meridians are punctured in winter, causing depletion of both Qi and Blood, it renders the person unable to see clearly." From this, we can deduce that the Eyes are nourished by Blood, which is evident. The Hand-Shaoyin Heart meridian generates Blood, and Blood enriches the Eyes; the Foot-Jueyin Liver meridian opens into the Eyes, and the Liver itself contains abundant Blood. Therefore, whether men suffer from epistaxis or hematochezia, or women suffer from metrorrhagia (Banglou) after childbirth, excessive loss of Blood can all lead to ocular diseases. These conditions manifest as pain in the eyeball, inability to see due to pain, photophobia (Xiuming), dryness and itching, weakness of the eyelids, and soreness and pain in the brow bone and Taiyang region. Treatment should primarily employ Xionggui Buxue Tang (Sichuan Lovage and Angelica Decoction for Nourishing Blood), or alternatively Danggui Yangrong Tang (Angelica Decoction for Nourishing the Ying), Chufeng Yisun Tang (Decoction for Dispelling Wind and Benefiting Loss), or Ziyin Dihuang Wan (Yin-Nourishing Rehmannia Pill). For cases with Heat signs, add Huangqin (Scutellaria Root); for postpartum leakage in women, add Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin); for poor Spleen and Stomach function with nausea and anorexia, add Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger). By restoring the Blood so that there is something to nourish, the disease will heal. However, one must avoid salty foods. The *Suwen: Xuanming Wuqi Pian* states: "Salty flavor travels to the Blood; those with Blood disorders should not consume much salt." This is the prohibition.
Xionggui Buxue Tang (Treats men with epistaxis and hematochezia, women with postpartum metrorrhagia, excessive blood loss leading to eyeball pain, inability to see, photophobia, soreness and dryness, eyelid weakness, and soreness in the brow bone and Taiyang region.)
Ingredients: Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Tianmendong (Asparagi Rhizoma) (each 4 fen), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparatum), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (each 5 fen), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Dangguishen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (each 6 fen).
Crush the ingredients into pieces. Add two zhong of water, decoct until one zhong remains, remove the dregs, and take warm. If there is nausea and anorexia, add Fresh Ginger and decoct together.
The above formula specializes in nourishing Blood, therefore Danggui and Shudihuang are used as Jun (Monarch) herbs; Chuanxiong, Niuxi, and Baishaoyao are used as Chen (Minister) herbs, because they dispel wind, restore continuity, relieve pain, and assist in nourishing Blood. Gancao and Baizhu harmonize the Stomach Qi greatly and are used as Zuo (Assistant) herbs. Fangfeng has ascending and dispersing properties; Shengdihuang tonifies the Kidney; Tianmendong treats Blood Heat. Since blood loss inevitably generates Wind and Dryness, these are used as Shi (Envoy) herbs.
