A nodule appearing first in the left breast indicates a male child. A nodule appearing first in the right breast indicates a female child.

For children aged three to five years, diagnosis primarily relies on observing physical signs. For children over five years old, pulse diagnosis gradually becomes feasible. A normal pulse rate is eight beats per respiration cycle. Nine beats indicate illness. Ten beats indicate critical condition. (Xu believed that using the thumb to palpate the Cun, Guan, and Chi positions on all three positions, ten beats indicate fever, and five beats indicate internal distension.)
A floating and rapid pulse in children indicates diseases such as nursing epilepsy and wind-heat.
A floating and rapid pulse in children indicates stagnation of the Five Zang organs (caused by overheated milk or excessive cotton clothing).
A deficient and choppy pulse in children indicates convulsions due to fright. (Furthermore, a floating pulse indicates wind pathogen, and a hurried and urgent pulse indicates deficiency-induced fright.)
A tight pulse in children indicates wind epilepsy.
A tight and wiry pulse in children indicates abdominal pain and restlessness.
A wiry and urgent pulse in children indicates disordered Qi circulation.
A deep, firm, and excess pulse in children indicates constipation of the Large Intestine.
A deep and rapid pulse in children indicates cold in the bones. (This rapid pulse is due to deficiency; deficiency leads to insufficient marrow, hence cold in the bones.)
A deep and thin pulse in children indicates cold syndrome.
An irregular pulse in children, varying in size from large to small, suggests misfortune or evil influences.

During the period of "Bian Zheng" (developmental changes) in infants, symptoms include body heat, chaotic pulse, sweating, refusal to nurse, and vomiting after feeding. Medical intervention should be avoided as it will self-heal. (Signs include body heat, confusion, vomiting milk, passing yellow foam, excessive crying without joy, and white bead-like formations on the upper lip. There is a change every 32 days, and a combined change at 64 days. Changes may also occur at 28 or 30 days without fixed regularity, ceasing around 25 months. After cessation, the infant's spirit and demeanor will differ from before.)
