The Heart corresponds to Fire. It flourishes in Summer. Its pulse is like a hook, large and surging (Hong). Its manifestation is on the tongue. Its sound is speech. Its odor is scorched. Its taste is bitter. Its fluid is sweat. It nourishes blood. Its color is red.
The Heart stores the Shen (Spirit). The Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian is its channel. It combines with the Small Intestine. The Small Intestine is a Fu organ governing the exterior; the Heart is a Zang organ governing the interior. When Heart Qi is excessive, leading to an excess of Shen, symptoms include pain inside the chest, distension and fullness under the costal margin, pain under the hypochondrium, pain between the back and shoulders, pain in the inner aspect of both arms, and incessant laughter. This indicates an Excess pattern of Heart Qi, which should be treated with draining methods. When Heart Qi is deficient, symptoms include distension and enlargement of the chest and abdomen, pulling pain between the hypochondrium and the lower back, palpitations with fright, mental confusion, pallor, stiffness of the root of the tongue, and frequent sorrow and grief. This indicates a Deficiency pattern of Heart Qi, which should be treated with tonifying methods. Regarding the four seasons, Heart diseases heal in Late Summer; if not healed in Late Summer, they worsen in Winter; if not fatal in Winter, they persist in Spring; and they recover in Summer. Regarding days, they heal on Wu-Ji days (Earth days); if not healed on Wu-Ji days, they worsen on Ren-Gui days (Water days); if not fatal on Ren-Gui days, they persist on Jia-Yi days (Wood days); and they recover on Bing-Ding days (Fire days). Regarding times of day, the patient feels better at noon, worse at midnight, and calm at dawn. Warm clothing and hot food are prohibited.
The region of the Heart is examined at the Cun Kou (Inch Position) on the left hand. If the Cun Kou pulse comes continuously like linked pearls, smooth as touching fine jade, it is called a Normal Pulse (Ping Mai). In Summer, the Stomach Qi is fundamental. In Summer, Heart Fire is flourishing.
If the pulse is floating, large, surging, and scattered, it is called a Normal Pulse. If instead it is deep, soft, and slippery, it indicates Kidney Water encroaching upon the Heart, i.e., Water overcoming Fire, which is a great reversal and untreatable. If instead it is wiry and long, it indicates Liver Wood encroaching upon the Heart, i.e., Mother overcoming Child; although ill, recovery is expected. If instead it is slow and large, it indicates Spleen Earth encroaching upon the Heart, i.e., Child encroaching upon Mother; although ill, recovery is expected. If instead it is faint, choppy, and short, it indicates Lung Metal encroaching upon the Heart; Metal oppressing Fire is a minor pathogen; although ill, death is not expected. In Heart disease, if the pulse comes rapid and continuous, with slight curvature in the middle, it is called Heart Disease. In fatal Heart conditions, the pulse is curved at the front and rigid at the back, like handling a hooked object, indicating Heart Death. The True Heart pulse arrives firm and beating, like touching Coicis Semen (Job's tears), accumulatingly; if the complexion is dark red-black and lusterless, and hair breaks off, death ensues.
The Spleen corresponds to Earth. It flourishes in Late Summer. Its pulse is slow (Huan). Its manifestation is on the mouth. Its sound is singing. Its odor is fragrant. Its taste is sweet. Its fluid is saliva (Xian). It nourishes flesh and muscles. Its color is yellow.
The Spleen stores Yi (Intellect/Thought). The Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian is its channel, combining with the Stomach. The Stomach is a Fu organ governing the exterior; the Spleen is a Zang organ governing the interior. When Spleen Qi is excessive, leading to an excess of Form, symptoms include abdominal distension, difficult urination, heavy body with suffering from hunger, flaccidity and inability to hold the feet, frequent convulsions, and pain in the soles of the feet. This indicates an Excess pattern of Spleen Qi, which should be treated with draining methods. When Spleen Qi is deficient, symptoms include inability to use the four limbs, diarrhea, undigested food in stool, vomiting and regurgitation, abdominal distension, and borborygmus. This indicates a Deficiency pattern of Spleen Qi, which should be treated with tonifying methods. Regarding the four seasons, Spleen diseases heal in Autumn; if not healed in Autumn, they worsen in Spring; if not fatal in Spring, they persist in Summer; and they recover in Late Summer. Regarding days, they heal on Geng-Xin days (Metal days); if not healed on Geng-Xin days, they worsen on Jia-Yi days (Wood days); if not fatal on Jia-Yi days, they persist on Bing-Ding days (Fire days); and they recover on Wu-Ji days (Earth days). Regarding times of day, the patient feels better at noon, worse at dawn, and calm in the late afternoon (Shen-You hours). The Spleen desires relaxation; urgently feed Sweet flavor to relax it, use Bitter flavor to drain it, and use Sweet flavor to tonify it. Warm food, overeating, damp living environments, and wet clothes are prohibited.
The region of the Spleen is examined at the Guan Position above on the right hand. In the sixth month, Spleen Earth flourishes. Its pulse is large, leisurely and slow, called a Normal Pulse. In Late Summer, Stomach Qi is fundamental.
If instead it is wiry and urgent, it indicates Liver Wood encroaching upon Spleen Earth, i.e., Wood overcoming Earth, which is a great reversal and untreatable. If instead it is faint, choppy, and short, it indicates Lung Metal encroaching upon Spleen Earth, i.e., Child encroaching upon Mother; it will heal spontaneously without treatment. If instead it is floating and surging, it indicates Heart Fire encroaching upon Spleen Earth, i.e., Mother returning to Child; recovery is expected without death. If instead it is deep, soft, and slippery, it indicates Kidney Water overcoming Spleen Earth, i.e., Water oppressing Earth, which is a minor pathogen; recovery is expected. A Spleen pulse that is long but weak, coming sparse and going rapid: two beats per breath is Normal; three beats is Li Jing (Departing from the Channel); four beats is Duo Jing (Depletion of Essence); five beats is Ming Jin (End of Life); six beats is Death. In Spleen disease, if the pulse is solid, abundant, and rapid, like a chicken lifting its foot, it is called Spleen Disease. In fatal Spleen conditions, the pulse is hard and sharp like a bird pecking, like a bird's claw, like water leaking from a roof, or like water dripping, indicating Spleen Extinction. The True Spleen pulse arrives weak and alternating between rapid and slow; if the complexion is lusterless and hair breaks off, death ensues.
