Diseases of the throat in infants and children arise from the binding of wind-toxicity, damp-heat pathogens to the Qi and Blood. These pathogens follow the meridians and lodge in areas of deficiency, thereby generating disease. If the pathology manifests in the throat, it may present as Hou Bi (sore throat with swelling and obstruction), Chan Hou Feng (wind entangling the throat characterized by severe swelling and dyspnea), or Ru E (swollen tonsils resembling papillae or silkworm moths). In severe cases, it may develop into Ma Hou Bi (horse sore throat, a critical condition with high fever and coma), or involve swelling of the uvula (Xuan Yong), or swelling of the cheeks and mandible, or sores within the throat. The following prescriptions are provided for these various conditions.
Treatment for Hou Bi with throat swelling and stuffiness: Calcinate honeycomb (Lufengfang) to ash, grind into fine powder. Take one qian per dose, mixed with milk. Calcinate snake skin (Shetui) to ash, grind into fine powder. Take one qian per dose, mixed with milk. Mix fourteen carp gallbladders (Liyu Dan) with soil from the bottom of the stove and apply to the affected area. Hold a slice of Chuan Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) in the mouth. Mash a handful of Chinese chives (Jiu), cook/apply, and change when cool. Hold a piece of Bai Fan (Alumen) the size of a chess piece in the mouth. Take one aged white plum (Chen Baimai), extract the flesh, wrap one Bai Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), hold in mouth and swallow saliva. Grind one Dilong (Pheretima aspergillum) until paste-like, mix evenly with egg white (Jizi Bai), and drip immediately into the throat. Tie a rope tightly around the flexed thumb joint, prick and bleed at the joint; recovery follows.
Tie Fen San (Iron Powder Powder)

She Tui (Ophichus Skin), 1 fen; fried Baimei Rou (White Plum Flesh), 1 fen; fried Niubangzi (Fructus Arctii), 0.5 liang; raw Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), 1 fen.
Grind all ingredients into a powder. Take one qian-bi (measure) per dose, wrap in silk, soak briefly in decoction, hold in mouth and swallow saliva. Allow the child to suck on the medicinal juice.
Another prescription for Hou Bi with throat swelling and difficult breathing: Fry 2 liang of Shunanzhu (Niubangzi/Fructus Arctii) until charred; roast 0.5 liang of Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) until yellow. Grind together into fine powder. Take one qian per dose, mixed with fresh water, adding a little honey.
Another prescription for Hou Bi causing aphonia: Decoct soybeans (Dadou), cool the juice, and gargle. Dissolve a small amount of Yuan Dan (Trionycis Gallbladder) in ginger and mint juice, administer orally. Recovery occurs upon vomiting. Qingyu Dan (Green Fish Gallbladder) is also effective; preserve by fermenting with Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis).
Treatment for Chan Hou Feng (Wind Entangling Throat) with qi stagnation and blockage: Roast She Tui (Ophichus Skin) until scorched yellow; remove roots and bake Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis). Grind equal parts into powder. Mix half a qian with warm wine; inducing vomiting yields good results.
