Infants presenting with "tortoise chest" (Guixiong, a deformity of the chest resembling a tortoise shell) are affected because the wet nurse has retained milk and foul fluids that were not expressed and removed before breastfeeding. Suddenly encountering wind-heat pathogenic factors and toxic influences, the Lung Meridian is injured, causing Qi stagnation in the lungs. This severe congestion obstructs the chest and diaphragm, leading to gradual elevation of the bones, resembling a tortoise shell; hence it is called "tortoise chest."
Baihe Wan (Lily Bulb Pill)
Treats infant tortoise chest.
Baihe (Lilii Bulbus, 1 liang), Chuan Poxiao (Natrii Sulfas, 0.5 liang), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis, 0.5 liang), Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex, 0.5 liang), Chuan Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 liang), Tianmendong (Asparagi Radix, 0.5 liang, heart removed), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, 0.5 liang, soaked in hot water, skin and tips removed).
Grind all ingredients into fine powder. Mix with honey to form pills the size of millet seeds. Administer 10 pills per dose, taken down with rice water.
Another prescription: Treatment as above. Apply turtle urine to rub and massage the sternum. Method for obtaining turtle urine: Place an object inside a lotus leaf, position the turtle on top, and shine a mirror upon it. The urine will naturally flow onto the lotus leaf. Collect it in a vessel for use; this method is highly effective.
Infants presenting with "tortoise back" (Guibei, a spinal deformity resembling a tortoise shell) occur because the infant's bones are not yet fully formed during early infancy. Forcing the child to sit alone causes the back to bulge like a mound. Occasionally, wind-pathogens invade and contend with blood and Qi, penetrating the bone marrow and causing stagnation that does not disperse. This results in the back rising high, resembling a tortoise shell; hence it is called "tortoise back," also known as "long back." If the deformity resembles a camel's hump with raised blocks, it is called "hunchback" (Tuobei), which is a congenital disease originating from pregnancy and is incurable.
Songyao Dan (Pine Medicine Pill)
Treats infant tortoise back.
Songhua (Pinii Pollen, 1 liang, baked dry), Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus, stir-bran fried, core removed, 1 liang), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, radix tip removed, 1 liang), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, radix tip and forked branches removed, 1 liang), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix, radix tip removed, 0.5 liang), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, roots and joints removed, 0.5 liang), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus/Core, 0.5 liang), Chuan Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 liang, processed).
Grind all ingredients into fine powder. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of millet seeds. Administer 10 pills per dose, taken down with rice water.
Another prescription: Treatment as above. Rub the spine with turtle urine. The method for obtaining urine is described previously.
Infants presenting with curled and contracted hands and feet are affected by weak constitutional Qi, weak sinews and bones, and lack of nourishment from blood and Qi. Consequently, wind-pathogens invade and contend within the meridians, causing sinews and vessels to contract and tighten. With skeletal weakness, the hands remain clenched and cannot be extended, and the legs are contracted and cannot be stretched or lifted. If the condition exists at birth, it is a congenital disease from pregnancy and is incurable.
Yiyi Ren Wan (Coix Seed Pill)
Treats hands clenched and unable to extend.
Yiyiren (Coicis Semen, 1 liang, soaked in hot water, washed clean, skin removed), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, radix tip removed, 1 liang, washed and baked dry), Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix, sprouts removed, 1 liang), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, radix tip and forked branches removed, 1 liang), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, radix tip removed, 1 liang), Suanzaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, skin removed, 1 liang).
Grind all ingredients into fine powder. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of Euryale seed. Administer one pill per dose, dissolved and taken down with a decoction of Moschus and Schizonepeta. Significant improvement is expected in infants.
Haitongpi San (Sea Poplar Bark Powder)
Treats legs contracted and unable to stretch or lift.
