Jaundice disease is primarily treated with Mahuang Chunjiu Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Wine Decoction).
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, a large handful, remove nodes, wrap in silk gauze)
Take the above single herb, boil in five sheng of high-quality clear wine until two and a half sheng remain, filter out the dregs, and take all at once. The *Gu Ling Fang* states: When cold damage heat emerges to the exterior causing jaundice, sweating should be induced for recovery. In winter, use wine; in spring, it is better to use water for boiling.
For treating jaundice where both body and eyes are yellow, and skin presents with yellow dust-like eruptions, Sanwu Yinchen Hao Tang (Three-Ingredient Yinchenhao Decoction) formula:
Yinchen Hao (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba, one handful); Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus, twenty-four seeds, split); Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, one jin, intact pieces).
Take the above three herbs, boil in eight sheng of water until two and a half sheng remain, filter out the dregs. Roast the Gypsum Fibrosum over fierce fire until it turns bright red, then throw it into the decoction. After boiling subsides, take the clear liquid. Take one sheng at a temperature suitable for consumption. Cover oneself to induce whole-body sweating, and apply warm powder over the body for cure. If no sweat occurs, administer another sheng; cure is achieved upon sweating.
When ordinary people suddenly experience chills without cause, followed by yellowing, skin eruptions resembling yellow dust, dark scanty urine, occasional constipation, normal strength, unimpaired diet, residual heat remaining after taking various decoctions, or chronic jaundice, Kushen San (Kushen Powder) formula:
Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix, one liang); Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, one liang); Tinglizi (Descurainiae Semen seu Lepidii Semen, stir-fried); Goudi (Trichosanthis Pericarpium); Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix); Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex); Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, each one liang).
Pulverize the above seven herbs into a powder. Take one cunbi (square-inch spoonful) with grain broth. It should induce severe vomiting. For those who vomit, take once daily; for those who do not, take twice daily. Purging may also occur. Observe effects after five days of medication; adjust dosage as needed. If ineffective, continue administration. Avoid pork and cold water.
In jaundice patients with abdominal fullness, difficult and dark urination, and sweating on the body, the exterior syndrome is resolved while interior excess heat prevails; purgation is indicated. Dahuang Huangbai Pi Zhizi Xiaoshi Tang (Dahuang, Huangbai, Zhizi, and Niter Decoction) formula:
Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, four fen); Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, four liang); Fei Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus, fifteen seeds, split); Xiaoshi (Natrii Sulfas, four liang, powdered).
Cut the above four herbs. Boil the first three in six sheng of water until two and a half sheng remain. Filter out the dregs, add Natrii Sulfas, and boil again until one sheng remains. Take all at once before meals.
Jaundice patients experiencing fever in the late afternoon but paradoxically feeling aversion to cold suffer from Nü Lao Dan (Female Labor Jaundice). Symptoms include urgency in the bladder, fullness in the lower abdomen, total body yellowing, blackening of the forehead, and heat in the soles of the feet, leading to Hei Dan (Black Jaundice). Stool will inevitably be black. Abdominal distension resembling water accumulation, or black loose stools indicate this is Nü Lao Dan, not fluid retention. Abdominal fullness indicates a difficult-to-treat condition. Treat with Xiaoshi Fanshi San (Niter and Alum Powder) formula:
Xiaoshi (Natrii Sulfas, stir-fried until yellow); Fanshi (Alumen, roasted until juices evaporate).
Mix equal parts of the above two herbs, pulverize, and sift through silk gauze. Mix with barley gruel juice to take one cunbi per dose, three times daily. Cover with heavy clothing to induce sweating. The disease resolves via stool and urine; urine becomes properly yellow, and stool becomes properly black. Barley must be hulled.
For jaundice presenting with fever and aversion to cold in the late afternoon, lower abdominal urgency, body yellowing, black forehead, black loose stools, and heat in the soles of feet, indicating Nü Lao Dan, where abdominal fullness makes it difficult to treat:
Huashi (Talcum, five liang, crushed and ground); Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, five liang, ground).
Pulverize the above two herbs. Take one cunbi mixed with barley gruel juice, three times daily. Cure is achieved when urination becomes extremely profuse.
Difuku Tang (Difuku Decoction) treats various heat accumulations in the Lower Jiao (Lower Burner), including dark yellow scanty frequent urination, severe pain during urination, or hematuria. It is used for residual heat after warm diseases, wind-heat contraction after cholera, excessive alcohol consumption, sexual fatigue, walking in heat, drinking cold beverages to counteract heat, heat accumulation in the Lower Jiao, moving stone heat causing Guan Ge (Obstruction and Reversal), hard lower abdomen, bladder distension like a bucket, and various Lin syndromes (Strangury). Upon ingestion, patency is restored.
Dicui Cao (Kochiae Herba, three liang); Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma); Zhuling (Polyporus); Qumai (Polygoni Avicularis Herba); Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix); Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma); Tongcao (Tetrapanacis Medulla), each two liang; Haizao (Sargassum, one liang); Kuizi (Abutilonis Semen, one sheng); Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, two liang, stir-fried).
Cut the above ten herbs. Boil in nine sheng of water until three sheng remain. Divide into three doses. If both urination and defecation are blocked, add Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, three liang). For women with sexual fatigue, heat in the Kidney, difficult urination, abdominal fullness and pain, and deep fine pulse, add one pig kidney.
For treating Lin syndrome, Yupi Tang (Elm Bark Decoction) formula:
Yupi (Ulmus Cortex, half a jin); Huashi (Talcum, two liang, alternative version one liang); Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, one liang, alternative version two liang); Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, stir-fried); Qumai (Polygoni Avicularis Herba), each two liang; Kuizi (Abutilonis Semen, one sheng).
Cut the above six herbs. Boil in ten dou of water until three sheng remain. Take one sheng warm in the morning. Avoid Haizao (Sargassum) and Songcai (Brassica rapa var. pekinensis).
For treating Shi Lin (Stone Strangury):
Collect moss from the bottom of attached boats, size of a duck egg. Boil one portion and a half in water to extract one portion. Take one sheng per dose, three times daily.
Another formula for Shi Lin:
Take enough Fusshi (Lapis Pumex) to fill one hand, pulverize. Boil in three sheng of water and one sheng of vinegar until two sheng remain. Clarify. Take one sheng warm. Within two or three doses, stones will pass.
Divine formula for Shi Lin:
Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen, two sheng), place in a silk bag. Boil in eight sheng of water until three sheng remain. Drink all. Walk one zhang daily. Stones should pass. Fasting overnight before taking is beneficial.
Another formula:
Fresh Cheqiancao (Plantaginis Herba) stems and leaves, crush together to extract juice. Take one sheng, three times daily.
For urinary obstruction and Guan Ge (Obstruction and Reversal):
Take fresh Tuniuxi root (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), crush to extract juice. Dilute slightly with water in a tube, blow into the urethra for immediate patency. Secret formula.
For treating urinary retention:
Douchi (Fermented Soybean, half a sheng), boil in four sheng of water for one boil. Filter dregs. One dose brings immediate cure and patency.
For treating urinary obstruction:
Heat salt, place in a cloth bag, and apply hot compress to the lower abdomen.
For sudden urinary obstruction and Bao Zhuan (Bladder Displacement):
Cheqiancao (Plantaginis Herba, one jin), boil in ten dou of water until four sheng remain. Divide into four doses.
