The aforementioned ingredients are ground into fine powder. One *sheng* (a unit of volume) of dried dates, with pits removed, is mixed with the powder to form dough-like balls. These are placed in a jar and burned using first a gentle fire (*wen huo*) and then a strong fire (*wu huo*) until they turn bluish-green. The residue is then ground into a fine powder. Take one *qian* (approx. 3-5g) with rice water. If there is excessive blood in the stool, add a small amount of *Huanglian* (Coptidis Rhizoma). For children, take half a *qian*. Another prescription adds *Langdangzi* (Datura Seed) and pig bile pills, which is particularly effective.
*Jishi Jiachuan* (Family Tradition of Mr. Ji) formula for treating various types of dysentery:
*Hezi Pi* (Terminalia Chebula Pericarpium), *Mituoseng* (Litharge, Lead Monoxide) (each 1 *liang*); *Badou* (Crotonis Fructus, Croton Seed) (20 grains, peeled and oil removed).
Grind the above ingredients into powder. Boil with two and a half *sheng* of vinegar for one *fu shi* (approx. 2 hours). While hot, stir in a container until it solidifies. Form into pills the size of mung beans. Take three pills each time, on an empty stomach with rice water. For chronic intermittent dysentery (*Xiuxi Li*), use rice water; for bloody dysentery (*Chi Li*), use licorice water; for mucoid dysentery (*Bai Li*), use dried ginger decoction.
