Chao Shi Bing Yuan (Source of Diseases in Chao's Work) - Infantile Abdominal Distension Ding Xi Syndrome: Infants suffering from Ding Xi disease do so because of overfeeding, while their spleen and stomach are still weak and unable to grind and digest food. When food is not digested, the essence of water and grain is reduced and depleted, leaving insufficient nourishment for Qi and Blood, resulting in emaciation and wasting of muscles. The characteristics of this disease are a distended abdomen and a thin neck, with sallow and emaciated complexion. If it persists for a long time without recovery, it transforms into Gu Syndrome (severe malnutrition due to long-term food stagnation). Caused by injury from fullness and satiety, it is called Bu Lu Disease, also known as Ding Xi. These three conditions are largely similar, named according to their severity.
Wu Guan Guan Zhen Zhu Nang: Infantile Ding Xi is referred to as Drumstick Wind or Crane Knee Wind syndrome. Whenever an infant suffers from prolonged vomiting and diarrhea that does not heal, or cannot walk after illness subsides, with swollen knees and red anus, it is called Ding Xi. Those under seven years old are called Drumstick Wind, and those under fifteen are called Crane Knee Wind. This is mainly caused by wind-cold injuring the Kidney, as the Kidney governs the bones.
Zhuang Family Collection - Differentiation of Gan Du and Ding Xi states: If an infant's abdomen is distended with visible blue veins, it is called Gan Du; if there are no blue veins, it is called Ding Xi. This is a condition acquired from overeating and food injury.
Ying Tong Bao Jian - Song on Infantile Ding Xi:
Abdomen high, neck thin, body flaccid and weak,
Spiritless, lacking luster, only loving to cry.
Long illness becomes Gu Syndrome, Spleen and Stomach wrapped,
Infant with such condition is called Ding Xi.
Ge Shi Zhou Hou - Formula for Gan Qi (Gan Qi Syndrome), large abdomen and emaciation.
