According to *Chao Shi Bing Yuan* (Source of Diseases by Master Chao) regarding the condition of sudden loss of voice and inability to speak in children: The throat is the pathway for Qi; the laryngeal aperture (throat/pharynx) is the gate through which sound emerges. If sudden cold pathogenic factors invade the laryngeal aperture, the aperture becomes cold and unable to produce sound, resulting in sudden aphonia. Inability to speak refers to the failure of sound to emerge, distinct from lockjaw (trismus).
From *Ying Tong Bao Jian* (Precious Mirror for Infants and Children), a song regarding pediatric wind-stroke with flaccidity, pain, and aphonia:
Wind-cold damages the sinews and vessels, causing complete numbness and insensitivity in the four limbs. Pain arises from the conflict of cold and hot qi; flaccidity on one side is generated by wind. Cold lodges in the laryngeal aperture, making the crying voice resemble that of a mute person. Warm decoctions should be administered; otherwise, the spirit and vital energy will be damaged.
