于血,血渗入肠内则赤也。若冷气搏于肠,津液凝滞则白也。冷热相交,赤白相杂。重者状如浓涕,而血杂之;

(Also known as dysentery with red and white discharge)
*Chao Shi Bing Yuan* (Source of Diseases by Chao Yuanfang) on the syndrome of cold-heat dysentery in children: Children initially suffer from improper diet, causing cold qi to remain between the stomach and intestines. Subsequently, they are injured by hot qi. Since the stomach and intestines are inherently deficient, they are susceptible to heat pathogens.
When cold and heat interact, diarrhea ensues. The stool may be yellow or white, watery or containing undigested food. This is termed cold-heat dysentery.
*Sheng Hui Fang* (Prescriptions of Holy Benefit): Dysentery with red and white discharge in children arises from irregular breastfeeding and feeding, leading to weakness of the stomach and intestines. Cold and heat qi enter the intestines and transform into dysentery. The red color occurs when heat harasses the blood, causing blood to seep into the intestines. The white color results from cold qi clashing in the intestines, causing fluids to stagnate. Cold and heat mix, resulting in a mixture of red and white. In severe cases, the appearance resembles thick mucus mixed with blood. In mild cases, there are thin streaks of blood on white pus, resembling fish brains; this is also called "fish brain dysentery."
Song from *Shi Bi Jing* (Stone Wall Classic) regarding the thirty-six types of internal red-and-white dysentery:
A white nose bridge and lips like jade indicate that this ailment is originally not caused by visceral toxin. It stems from a past habit of eating clay (or tea), which led to the disease. (These two lines in *Feng Ti Jing* state: Initially due to excessive cold and heat in the viscera, causing the spleen and stomach to fail to digest grain.) A pale face and drooping eyelids with blue lines should not be viewed as ordinary ailments. Observe the child's palms and soles; deep red spots resembling eczema appear. Treatment should first generate stomach qi, then remove accumulation. Differentiate between water and grain diarrhea, and stop medication once thirst is resolved.
Song from *Xiao Er Xing Zheng Lun* (Discussion on Infant Forms and Syndromes) regarding forty-eight syndromes of red-and-white dysentery:
Red and white discharge due to accumulation appears jade-like; a white nose tip indicates extreme toxicity. If laxatives are used without regard for cold/heat or proper formulas, it causes constipation and urgency in the large intestine. Pale face and eyelids with blue lines should not be dismissed as minor illnesses. Consult a physician to check the palms and soles for red spots resembling epistaxis. This syndrome involves imbalance of cold and heat, with red spots on hands and feet. *Xuanlian Wan* (see section on Gu Li) is appropriate.
Song from *Hui Ji Fang* (Prescriptions of Compassionate Aid) on infant red-and-white dysentery:
Cold dysentery presents with greenish stool mixed with red, likely due to accumulation and wind. Initially, there is thirst and fever, hindering appetite, while dysentery turns purulent. To open the appetite, regulate the upper jiao; for abdominal pain, urgently attack the excess. Recurrent heat and thirst will not last long if the pulse is large, floating, and surging.
Formula from *Lu Xin Jing* (Classic of Cranial Fontanelles) for treating infant red-and-white dysentery:
Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), Chishizhi (Red Halloysite), Zhike (Bitter Orange Peel, bran-fried), Longgu (Dragon Bone), Hezi (Chebula Fruit, half-roasted, pitted, each 0.5 liang), Baizhu (Atractylodes Rhizome, 1 fen).
Grind into powder. For one- or two-year-olds, take half a qian on an empty stomach with rice gruel.
Formula from *Ben Cao* (Materia Medica) for treating infant red-and-white dysentery:
Use fermented bean curd, finely chopped like bean flour, mixed with vinegar water and boiled for over twenty boils. Infants suffering from this condition benefit greatly from taking it.
*Waitai Miyao* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold for Emergencies) citing *Jiuji Fang* (Emergency Rescue Prescriptions) for curing red-and-white dysentery regardless of chronicity, stopping immediately upon ingestion:
Xiangchi Xin (Heart of Fermented Soybeans, referring to the center of the bean mass, mature and good quality, not merely the core after peeling; do not use indiscriminately).
Dry-fry the single ingredient until fragrant, grind into powder. Adults take four doses from one sheng of heart beans, each dose with one sheng of wine. Infants take four doses from one xiaosheng, mixing well to stop diarrhea. For smaller infants, adjust dosage according to strength.
*Waitai Miyao* citing *Jin Xiao Fang* (Near-Efficiency Prescriptions) for frequent bowel movements in red-and-white dysentery, suitable for all ages:
Gancao (Licorice Root, 2 liang), roasted and cut. Boil in four sheng of sour water to obtain one sheng. Strain and take at once.
*Waitai Miyao* citing Cui Shi's formula for adult and pediatric dysentery, regardless of cold/heat, red/white, chronicity, or malnutrition fever. Liu Bijian suffered from chronic dysentery for years and recovered with this formula:
Ejiao (2 liang, 1 liang roasted for decoction, 1 liang melted into liquid), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, 2 liang), Wuhuanglian (Coptis, 1 liang), Rahuangwushi (Myrobalan, 2 pieces; increase to 3-4 pieces for severe chronic dysentery with intestinal sliding).
Grind the four ingredients into powder. Dissolve Ejiao in vinegar water, mix into pills the size of mulberry seeds. Take ten pills with water; gradually increase to thirty pills after five days. Adjust for elderly and children. Observe standard dietary restrictions. Alternative: Take cold dysentery with wine, hot dysentery with rice gruel.
*Waitai Miyao* citing *Guangji Fang* (Broad Benefit Prescriptions) for infant red-and-white dysentery with abdominal pain:
Chishizhi (Red Halloysite), Baishi Zhi (White Halloysite), Longgu (Dragon Bone), Diyü (Sanguisorba Root), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, each 4 fen), Houpo (Magnolia Bark, roasted), Renshen (Ginseng Root, each 3 fen), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, each 2 fen).
Grind the eight ingredients into powder. Take half a qianbi with drink twice daily; or make honey pills and take three to seven pills with milk. This formula is excellent; use discretion.
*Waitai Miyao* citing *Bixiao Fang* (Must-Efficient Prescriptions) for infants aged one to two with chronic red-and-white dysentery: Chicken Egg Cake.
Chicken eggs (2, using whites only), Hufen (Lead Carbonate, 2 qian, roasted), Beeswax (date-sized).
Roast the three ingredients in a pot until melted. Add egg whites and lead carbonate, cook until forming a cake. Feed on an empty stomach at dawn, divided into three meals, to stop dysentery.
*Waitai Miyao* citing Liu Shi's formula for infant red-and-white dysentery:
Take a small amount of Sesame Seeds, roast until fragrant, grind into powder. Mix with honey into a paste and administer. Also treats adults (*Zimu Milu* notes hemp seeds are effective; *Shenghui Fang* uses Huoma seeds mixed with honey into pills, dissolved in honey water).
*Waitai Miyao* citing Liu Shi's another formula for infant red-and-white dysentery:
Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark, roasted, 0.5 liang), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root, 6 fen).
Cut the two ingredients, boil in one sheng of water to obtain six he. Divide and take warm.
*Waitai Miyao* Liu Shi's further method:
Bangdangzi (Datura Seeds), Lamb Meat (sliced thinly on cloth).
Wrap both in cotton and insert into the anus. Cure within two applications; use with discretion. Very effective.
*Shiyi Xinjian* (Heart Mirror of the Food Doctor) for infant red-and-white dysentery and watery diarrhea:
Grind Yunmu Fen (Mica Powder) and mix with one qian in cooked white porridge. Eat on an empty stomach.
