Shuiyin Wan (Mercury Pill) transmitted by Zheng Yu, a physician from Changsha, for treating incessant crying in infants, where the nursing mother feeds immediately after, due to unresolved anger, causing saliva to wrap around milk, stagnating in the chest and diaphragm, resulting in sallow complexion, occasional fever, and vomiting.
Take five to seven copper-coin-sized amounts of the powder from "San Chu Wan" (Three-Ejection Pill) from the Accumulation and Collection chapter. Mix with Hydrargyrum (Shuiyin, Quicksilver) and Mugwort Herb (Aiye, Artemisia Argyi Leaf) and grind evenly until no granules remain. Zhubing Yuanhou Lun (Source Book of All Diseases and Syndromes) Syndrome of Infant Vomiting: Infant vomiting is caused by improper temperature regulation of milk and food. Improper feeding leads to stagnation in the chest and diaphragm. Subsequent feeding causes conflict between old and new contents, preventing Qi from circulating freely, thus causing vomiting. If the pulse is floating, there is no serious concern.
Bencao (Materia Medica) states that infant regurgitation (Ou Ni) differs from spitting up milk (Ru), which requires careful distinction. Spitting up milk refers to milk flowing from the corner of the mouth after being full.
Mao Xiansheng: Infants may present with symptoms of mid-feed spitting up. Milk flows naturally from the corner of the mouth without stability; body temperature is slightly elevated; mouth and nose are slightly cold; face and eyes appear greenish-yellow; eyes move slowly. This syndrome arises because the nursing mother engaged in excessive sexual activity while the infant cried, and was fed again, leading to disharmony of Yin and Yang. The infant experiences discomfort in the chest and diaphragm; milk stagnates in the stomach, fails to digest, and causes stomach cold, resulting in this condition. Unstable milk flow causes natural leakage from the mouth corner. Treatment: First, administer Shuijing Chenxiang Yinzi (Awakening Spirit Agarwood Drink) (see Cholera Chapter) combined with Dingxiang San (Cardamom Powder) (see Vomiting and Diarrhea Chapter), followed by Huopi San (Spleen-Activating Powder) for regulation and cure (two formulas available: see Stomach Qi Disharmony Chapter and Slow Spleen Wind Chapter). Fear that Spleen deficiency generates heat, leading to mania, restlessness, eye deviation, slight wheezing, transforming into Slow Spleen Wind, a malignant prognosis untreatable. Also, a song on fatal signs of infant spitting up:
Spitting up persists, treatment fails to cure;
Spleen deficient, mania prevents sleep.
Eyes deviate upward, slight wheezing ensues;
Transformation to slow wind, life draws to its close.
Yingtong Baojian Song on Infant Spitting Up:
Mother's diet lacks moderation in warmth and coolness,
Causing congestion and stagnation in the chest.
New milk meets old, blocking passage,
Failing to circulate smoothly into intestines and stomach.
This is called spitting up, requiring regulation;
If pulse is light and floating, it is not harmful.
Shibi Jing (Stone Wall Classic) Thirty-Six Types of Spitting Up Syndrome Song:
Fontanelle sunken, moving constantly;
Vomit smells fishy, milk appears raw.
Eyes cloudy, blue-green with white membrane;
Sweat profuse, feet cold as ice.
Fine breath indicates stomach cold injury;
Coarse breath suggests impending fright.
Wind syndrome should be treated early;
Warming stomach and harmonizing spleen brings peace.
This results from alternating cold and heat. Rapid breathing indicates excess in stomach, cooling will heal. Sunken fontanelle and fine breath require generating Stomach Qi. Generalized high fever, white membrane in eyes, severe coarse breathing and wheezing: if not treated urgently, convulsions will occur.
Fengsui Jing (Phoenix Marrow Classic) has identical lyrics, with notes: Qi dispersion, administer Dihuang San (Rehmannia Powder); Coarse Qi, administer Congtang Wan (Scallion Soup Pills) to induce sweating. (Dihuang San see Cholera/Vomiting/Diarrhea Chapter. Congtang Wan see Fright/Accumulation Chapter. Same as Jishi Family Transmission.)
Xiao'er Xingzheng Lun (Discussion on Infant Forms and Syndromes) Forty-Eight Types of Spitting Up Song is identical, followed by: This syndrome is caused by Fright Milk attacking Stomach Qi, or Feeding Milk attacking Spleen, or Qi Milk, or Disease Milk, causing vomit to smell fishy even from afar. Administer Baochi Wan (Protect Infants Pill) (see All Epilepsy Chapter). Fine breath and deep pulse, administer Tiaowei San (Regulate Stomach Powder) (see Heat Accumulation Chapter).
