Chao's Pathogenesis of Diseases: Prognosis of Pediatric Epistaxis — The meridians and blood-q i of children contain Heat, predisposing them to epistaxis. Blood follows Qi, circulating through meridians and connecting to the zang-fu organs. If Cold and Heat are harmonious, circulation follows its normal course without obstruction or extravasation. Blood congeals and stagnates when encountering Cold, but flows and scatters recklessly when encountering Heat. In children with excessive Heat, Heat invades the blood, causing blood to follow Qi and overflow from the nose, termed Epistaxis. Generally, when humans have Blood deficiency combined with Heat, blood loses its normal course, scatters and overflows, potentially affecting the seven orifices, termed Major Hemorrhage.
Qianjin Yi Fang: When the pulse is floating with fever, dry mouth and nose, and the patient can eat, epistaxis will occur.
Yingtong Bao Jian: Children's Heart Heat causes Lung Qi to penetrate the blood; following the Heat into the Lung Meridian, it results in epistaxis.
Hui Ji: Song on the Prognosis of Pediatric Epistaxis —
When epistaxis is about to occur, the pulse is wiry and surging; the nose feels dry with a wind-like sound. Qi rushes and accumulated blood stays in the Lungs; the zang-fu are vexed and attacked by pathogenic pulses. If only a few drops of red appear, it is treatable; if it increases to sheng or dou amounts, life will surely end. If a skilled physician wishes to know the treatment method, cooling the blood and clearing the chest yields merit. (Clearing the chest refers to clearing the Lungs.)
Ge's Elbow Post: Formula for treating sudden and frequent epistaxis in infants and young children, triggered by slight exertion.
Take Sang'er (Auricularia Judae) in any quantity, roast until charred, grind and sieve. Whenever epistaxis occurs, plug the nose several times with an amount the size of an apricot kernel to stop it. The Wai Tai Mi Yao method suggests burning it into pills and inserting them into the nose.
