Ying Tong Bao Jian: Pediatric edema (water qi) results from long-standing accumulation that remains untreated, combined with frequent purgation leading to Spleen and Stomach deficiency. The accumulated pathogenic factors dissipate and transform into water retention, causing generalized flaccid swelling. The skin resembles a ripe plum; pressing it leaves an indentation that fills back up, indicating water dampness stagnation. Additionally, there is flaccid swelling due to Gan malnutrition syndrome (chronic childhood malnutrition), but the complexion lacks luster.
Hui Yan Guan Zheng: Edema caused by water qi presents with the whole body having a yellowish hue similar to a ripe yellow plum, which is difficult to resolve. Treatment should first regulate Qi. On the following day at the fourth watch (around 1-3 AM), administer Zhongyong Yinzi (Neutral Decoction) to expel floating water from the interstitial membranes, approximately one to two basins (formula see specialized section). Subsequently, regulate Qi again, nourish with congee for one month, abstain from salt and vinegar for one month, and additionally take Tiaoqi San (Regulate Qi Powder) (formula not seen); the patient must maintain a peaceful state of mind. If the umbilicus protrudes, the abdomen swells, and both kidney regions feel hard as stone, this is a death omen and is incurable.
