According to *Chao Shi Bing Yuan* (Source of Diseases by Chao Yuanfang) regarding the condition of pediatric Gu-zhu (parasitic infection): People gather various insects and snakes, place them in a vessel, and let them devour each other. The one remaining is named "Gu" (venomous parasite). It can transform its form or enter the abdomen through food and drink, consuming the five Zang organs. If children are infected with Gu, the symptoms are no different from those in adults or the elderly, presenting as stabbing pain in the heart and abdomen, and inner restlessness and depression. In acute cases, death occurs immediately; in chronic cases, it lasts for years, leading to gradual emaciation and weakness. After the heart is consumed, blood is passed via stool, causing the heart to rot until death. Upon death, the Gu may transmit to others, hence the term "Gu-zhu".
*Waitai Miyao* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold for Emergency Use) records: Fan Wang treated various diseases of Gu-zhu in adults and children, including Jia-ji ju-lei (abdominal masses), emaciation where flesh and bones feel eroded by acid, difficulty in urination and defecation, sudden attack by evil qi, abdominal distension due to encountering bad wind, lin syndrome with water transmission, affecting the whole household including males, females, and grandchildren, which doctors could not cure.
