The formula for Jicheng Hangxie Dan (Integrated Turbid Qi Pill) is found in Volume 2, "Treatise on Fetal Diseases."
Jicheng Sanxian Dan (Integrated Three Immortals Pill): Treats infants and children who eat without restraint, consuming excessive food. The tangible food obstructs the intestines and stomach, preventing transportation and transmission. This causes Spleen Qi (Spleen energy) to become depressed, resulting in persistent fever, eyes closed and difficult to open, mental confusion, and flaccid paralysis of the four limbs, presenting a false appearance of extreme deficiency. The ancients referred to this as "Great excess manifesting as weakness" (Severe excess syndrome presenting with deficient symptoms). Ignorant practitioners mistakenly treat it as a deficiency syndrome and administer potent tonics, or suspect it as Wind-stroke/Convulsion and use heavy sedatives. In such cases, not one in a hundred survives. Quickly administer this pill together with Hangxie Dan. After defecation occurs, mental clarity will be restored.
I have treated many such cases and speak from the heart: If Dysentery (Damp-Heat dysentery) is mistakenly treated with astringent herbs, it closes off Damp-Heat pathogens, which is even more dangerous than obstruction by tangible food. Rapid purgation is required; failure to purge leads to death.
Ingredients: Trogopterus Dung (Wulingzhi, 1 liang), Costus Root (Nanmuxiang, 5 qian), Croton Seed Kernel (Badou Ren, 40 grains).
Preparation: Grind Trogopterus Dung and Costus Root into fine powder for later use. Peel the shells from Croton seeds, take 40 pure kernels, remove the tender skin, wrap them in paper moistened with water, and roast slowly over low heat until thoroughly cooked. Remove and wrap in cotton paper, then slowly pound to extract the oil. Replace the paper when wet, continuing until a white powder remains. This is called "Croton Frost" (Bashuang). Mix this evenly with the powders of the other two ingredients. Use vinegar and wheat flour paste to form pills the size of mung beans. Coat with Cinnabar powder, dry, and store. Administer 5, 7, or 9 pills per dose, adjusting according to the child's age and size. Crush together with 2-3 pills of Hangxie Dan, and swallow with clear tea water. After defecation, the disease will be cured immediately. This is a life-saving medicine; do not regard it as an ordinary prescription.
The Classics state: "Cough with qi rebellion, the pathogenesis lies in the chest, involving the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine channel and the Hand-Taiyin Lung channel." Early symptoms include red face and lips, coarse breathing, fever, cough with phlegm rattle, slight edema of the eyelids, and sweating on the forehead. This is caused by External contraction of Wind-Cold, requiring urgent dispersal and release.
Commentary: Cough leading to convulsions is rare. Generally, in External contraction diseases, cough is considered a mild symptom, whereas in Internal injury diseases, cough is considered severe. Whether due to seasonal pathogens (Spring Warmth, Summer Heat, Autumn Dryness, Winter Cold) or epidemic pestilence, even in critical conditions, the presence of cough indicates vital energy remains, as External contraction entering the Six Channels (Taiyang, Yangming, Shaoyang, Taiyin, Shaoyin, Jueyin) does not lead to death. Thus, cough in external diseases is mild. Conversely, for those indulging in wine and sex, with unregulated desires and excessive consumption of essence, the onset of cough is worrying. If treated improperly, it leads to Consumption (Xu Lao) and Lung Flaccidity (Fei Wei), resulting in imminent death. Thus, cough in internal injuries is severe. Infants lack developed knowledge and thus do not suffer from internal injuries. All coughs in infants are either Cold or Heat. Cold injures the Lung, and Heat also injures the Lung. If physicians can distinguish between Cold and Heat and prescribe accordingly, efficacy is immediate. However, those who ignore Yin and Yang and fail to differentiate Cold and Heat may use cooling purgatives instead of acrid-dispersing agents, or ascending-floating agents instead of moistening ones. This causes Cold to become colder and Dryness to become drier, leading to hoarseness, upward deviation of the eyes, and hand convulsions. Treatment should utilize Jicheng Jinshu Dan (Integrated Golden Millet Pill).
