To treat sudden deafness in children without apparent cause, apply turtle urine into the ear canal; this is effective. Alternatively, apply raw sesame oil three to five times daily, and recovery will occur within a few days.
For swelling and pain inside the ear with pus discharge, use *Dyschoriste linearis* (Huercao, 虎耳草), also known as "Inverted Lotus". Crush and extract the juice, and instill a large amount into the ear canal frequently. This is an excellent remedy for deafness; adding a small amount of calcined alum (Kufan, 枯矾) enhances its efficacy.
For persistent purulent discharge from the ear, bake *Punica granatum* flower layers (Qianceng Shiliuhua, 千层石榴花) until dry, grind into powder, and insufflate into the ear canal using a small bamboo tube.
For sores on the external ear, mix one qian of lead tetroxide (Huandan, 黄丹), eight fen of pine rosin (Songxiang, 松香), and one fen of calomel (Qingfen, 轻粉) into a fine powder. Mix with sesame oil and apply externally.
Sores behind the ear in children are termed Kidney Gan (Shen Gan, 肾疳 - ulcerative lesions due to kidney deficiency). Grind *Cortex Lycii* (Digupi, 地骨皮) into powder, sift the fine portion, and apply mixed with sesame oil. Use the coarse residue decocted in water for washing.
When insects enter the ear, instill cat urine; the insects will exit spontaneously. If sesame oil is used instead, the insects may die and remain trapped. To obtain cat urine: rub ginger on its nose to induce urination.
For harmful insects entering the ear, use the filtrate obtained by leaching ash from burnt rice straw into the ear canal; the insects will die and be expelled.
The *Classic of Internal Medicine* states: "The white qi of the West communicates internally with the Lung, and opens through the nasal orifice." It further states: "The five qi enter through the nose and are stored in the Heart and Lung; when disease occurs, the nose becomes obstructed." Generally, the nose is the orifice of the Lung. Nasal congestion indicates that Lung Qi fails to communicate with the orifice. Since the Lung governs the skin and hair, external contraction of Wind-Cold causes Lung Qi to become congested and closed, resulting in nasal congestion. Apply Chuanxiong Ointment (Chuanxiong Gao, 川芎膏).
Runny nose occurs when the Lung is attacked by cold wind, failing to retain body fluids, which then transform into nasal discharge. Disperse it with Xixin Powder (Xixin San,
Nasal polyps (Bi Zhi, 鼻痔) result from prolonged retention of Wind-Cold in the Lung, causing accumulation of purulent mucus and loss of smell. When one cannot perceive odors, it is termed Bi Zhi. Apply Wanjinh Ointment (Wanjinh Gao, 万金膏).
All three aforementioned conditions are suitable for dispersing and unblocking; Tongqi San (Tongqi Powder, 通气散) should be used for all.
Dry nose results from Heat in the Heart and Spleen steaming upward to the Lung, depleting fluids and causing dryness. Clear Heat and generate fluids using Daochi San (Daochi Powder, 导赤散) with added *Ophiopogon japonicus* (Maidong, 麦冬).
If the condition reaches extremity, with a dry and black nose, dilated nostrils, and exhalation of cold air, this indicates exhaustion of Lung Qi, a non-treatable syndrome.
Bi Yuan (Nasal Sinusitis) presents with foul-smelling nasal discharge. This is caused by Gallbladder Heat transferring to the Brain, also known as Brain Collapse (Naobeng, 脑崩). Use Xinyi San (Xinyi Powder, 辛夷散).
In newborn infants, sudden nasal congestion occurring on the third or seventh day, preventing suckling and breathing, is often caused by the nursing mother exhaling air onto the infant's fontanelle while sleeping without taking precautions, or by exposure to Wind-Cold during bathing. Apply Tongguan San (Tongguan Powder, 通关散).
Epistaxis (Bi Nie, 鼻衄) is caused by accumulated Heat in the Five Viscera. Blood follows Qi; when affected by Heat, it moves recklessly and overflows from the nose. Cool the blood and descend Fire using Jiadi Dihuang Tang (Modified Rehmannia Decoction, 加减地黄汤), and apply Bixi San (Bixi Powder, 吹鼻散) externally.
