The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) states: The North generates coldness, which corresponds to the Kidney (*Shen*) among the Zang organs, and to the ears (*Er*) among the sensory orifices. It further states: Kidney Qi connects with the ears; when Kidney Qi is harmonious, the ears can perceive the five tones. Therefore, the ears fundamentally belong to the Kidney, while the area anterior to the earlobe belongs to the Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian. In children, some cases arise from excess Qi in the Kidney meridian, where heat rushes upward to the ears, causing body fluids to stagnate and transform into pus, or clear discharge. Other cases result from water entering the ear during bathing, leading to deafness. These are treated internally with Manjingzi San (Vitex Fruit Powder) and externally with Longgu San (Dragon Bone Powder). Sores appearing before and after the earlobe that ooze and fail to heal are named "Moon Erosion Sore" (*Yueshi Chuang*). Folklore attributes this to pointing at the moon with a finger. All such conditions are treated with external methods using Huangbai San (Phellodendron Bark Powder).
If severe pain suddenly occurs in the ear, as if insects are running inside, or if blood and fluid discharge occur, or if dry pain is unbearable, Shetui San (Snake Molt Powder) is used.
Sudden deafness due to Qi blockage results from Wind pathogen invading the brain and stagnating in the Hand-Taiyang Bladder Meridian. Treatment should focus on dispersing Wind and clearing Fire, using Daochi San (Guide Out Red Powder) added with Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), or Tongqiao Wan (Orifice-Opening Pill).
Redness and swelling beside the ear indicate Heat-Toxin. If not treated urgently, it will likely develop into a large carbuncle. Apply Fudu San (Toxin-Spreading Powder) externally and take Xiaodu Yin (Detoxification Decoction) internally.
