Pediatric edema mostly belongs to wind-induced edema. Edema caused by food stagnation occurs in individuals with robust constitution and resolves spontaneously after sweating. For edema due to food stagnation, resolution via digestion leads to cure; for edema due to deficiency, tonification is indicated.
For edema, reduction methods are used. The following formulas should be modified according to the child's excess or deficiency patterns by the practitioner.
Methods for observing edema:
If swelling is present in the upper body but subsided in the lower body, accompanied by numbness and closure of the skin, diaphoresis (sweating) should be induced; Yuebi Tang is suitable.
Press the swollen area with fingers; if the indentation recovers slowly, it is edema; Wupi Yin is indicated.
If the body is weak with clear urine and loose stools, Jinkui Shenqi Tang is suitable.
Press the swollen area with fingers; if it rebounds immediately upon release, Muxiang Liuqi Yin is suitable.
If swelling is present in the lower body but subsided in the upper body, this indicates sinking of Yuan Qi (Primal Qi); lifting methods should be employed; Buzhong Yiqi Tang is suitable.
If swelling and pain are caused by food accumulation, guiding out stagnation is indicated; Xiangping San is suitable.

Alternative prescription: Decoct Hulu (Lagenariae Siceraria Fructus) and Qianniu (Pharbitidis Semen) in water for oral administration.
Alternative prescription: Roast Tudou (Trogopteri Dung / Groundhog excrement? Note: Text says "Tu Gou", usually refers to Trogopterus dung or similar, here likely Trogopteri Dung or specific insect, context implies diuretic/accumulation breaker, often interpreted as Trogopteri Dung or similar traditional material, but strictly "Tu Gou" is Groundhog. In pediatric edema contexts, sometimes refers to specific local remedies. Given standard texts, might be a typo for Tu Fu Ling or similar, but sticking to text: Roast Tu Gou (Groundhog/Trogopterus depending on regional usage, here literal translation), dry, grind to powder, take with wine. *Correction*: In many ancient texts "Tu Gou" refers to Trogopterus Dung (Lingzhi) or similar. However, literal is Groundhog. Let's stick to literal entity extraction but translate accurately. Actually, "Tu Gou" often refers to the animal or its parts. Let's use "Groundhog".
Alternative prescription: Stuff a carp with garlic, cook until full, consume. After urination and defecation become unobstructed, take Jianpi Wan (Spleen-Strengthening Pill).
