Whenever Yang syndrome fever does not subside but instead Yin pulse appears, it is a ominous sign. ○ If the pulse is floating and slippery, sweating is profuse like oil, panting is unceasing, food and fluids cannot be taken in, limbs are numb and insensible, alternating between stillness and panting, death ensues.
○ Sweating moistly with unceasing panting indicates the Lung Qi failing first. ○ Body color dark like smoke, eyes staring straight, head shaking indicates the Heart Qi failing first. ○ Lips and mouth corners turning blue, limbs twitching with cold sweat indicates the Liver Qi failing first. ○ Blackening around the mouth, empty sweat yellowish indicating Spleen Qi failure. ○ Pulse tight and large in all three positions (Cun, Guan, Chi), profuse sweating with heat not resolving indicates death. ○ Both Cun and Chi pulses are deficient in Yin and Yang, with continuous heat indicates death. ○ Body heat, coarse breathing, seeing Yang pulse with restlessness indicates death; cold extremities with deep and fine pulse indicates death.
Qihai (CV 6) is located 1.5 cun below the umbilicus, Shimen (CV 5) is 1 cun below the umbilicus, Guanyuan (CV 4) is 3 cun below the umbilicus. These three acupoints are effective for treating Yin Jue (Cold Reversal due to Yang deficiency) with faint pulse nearly imperceptible, retraction of the scrotum, urinary incontinence, abdominal pain, abdominal fullness, and borborygmus.
Yanglingquan (GB 34) consists of two points, located 1 cun below the knee. Yi Lao (referring to Zhang Yuansu) stated: For irritability, fullness, and retraction of the scrotum, moxibustion on this point is suitable.
Whenever the pulse is faint and wiry, with lower abdominal pain, it belongs to Jueyin disease; moxibustion on Guilai (ST 29) and Guanyuan (CV 4) for several moxa cones is suitable.
Whenever the pulse is deep, with periumbilical abdominal pain, it belongs to Shaoyin disease; moxibustion on Zhongwan (CV 12) for five to seven moxa cones is suitable.
Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction): Treats Biao-heat of the Foot-Taiyang meridian, combining to cause fever, also called "feeling like feathers brushing," where the heat feels as if brushed by feathers on the surface of the skin, indicating heat in the Exterior. With floating and rapid pulse, or floating and tight pulse, headache, body pain, lower back pain, bone and joint pain, aversion to wind, anhidrosis, and panting, use this decoction to induce sweating.
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, 3 qian), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 2 qian), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, peeled and tipped, 1.5 qian).
Boil the above ingredients in one cup of water with three slices of fresh ginger and one jujube. Remove the foam on top, filter the clear liquid, and drink while hot. Cover with blankets to induce sweating until the palms and soles are sweaty; do not take further doses. If no sweat occurs after a short while, drink a bowl of hot thin porridge to assist the medicinal power; stop when sweat appears. If still no sweat, decoct another dose and administer, continuing to cover warmly to induce sweat. For severe cases, observe continuously over day and night. If exterior symptoms persist, prepare another dose.
Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction): Treats Shanghan (Cold Damage) with fever, sweating, and aversion to cold, which is an Exterior Deficiency pattern. Use this decoction to harmonize; do not forcibly induce sweating.
Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 2 qian), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 2 qian), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian).
Boil the above in one cup of water with three slices of fresh ginger and one jujube. Remove dregs and take warm.
