The throat and pharynx are vital connections between the whole body and Stomach Qi, serving as the passage for respiration. If heat toxins accumulate in the chest and diaphragm, causing wind-phlegm to stagnate and fail to disperse, diseases of the throat and pharynx arise. Ulcers may form inside the throat, sometimes resembling rotting flesh, referred to as "KT" in the text, characterized by pain, obstruction, difficulty in vomiting or swallowing, and in severe cases, the formation of a double tongue (Chong She). Treatment should primarily focus on dispelling wind-phlegm to unblock the pharynx and diaphragm, followed by resolving heat toxins; delay may lead to untreatable conditions. Generally, throat and pharyngeal diseases originate from heat toxins attacking upward. Heat pathogens contracted throughout the four seasons hide between the Heart and Lungs, easily attacking the throat and pharynx, which is termed "Kidney Cold Damage" (Shen Shang Han) in this context. However, symptoms manifest as Rou E (fleshy growths), Chong She (double tongue), Mu She (wooden tongue), Zuo Sai (swollen cheeks), Xuan Yong (hanging abscess/swelling), or swelling both internally and externally. In severe cases, the pathogen attacks upward to the head and face, causing total swelling of the head and face. The general method is first to wash away white coating from the mouth and tongue, then sweep away wind-phlegm saliva. For single or bilateral Rou E, needle therapy may be applied if appropriate; otherwise, fumigation and topical powders are used to reduce the swelling. Subsequent formulas are administered according to the progression of the disease. Mild cases resolve spontaneously with oral medication, without need for needling or cauterizing the ulcers, which will heal naturally. Chan Hou Feng (Wind-wrapping the throat) arises from heat accumulation in the heart and chest generating wind and accumulating wind-phlegm. If the nose appears cyanotic and black, there is nasal congestion and choking, the head hangs low, and the sputum is sticky and gelatinous with abnormal color, it indicates an incurable condition.
