[Zeng Shi] The Liver corresponds to the Azure Dragon of the East Wood. Its movement responds to Wind; when diseased, it primarily manifests as fright and terror. Various Heat pathogens draw out Liver Wind. With Wind comes Phlegm; with Phlegm comes convulsion. During pediatric wind-stroke (Jing Feng), when hands and feet twitch and jerk, one should allow them to settle naturally before treating, to avoid other complications. If parents, fearing the severity, forcibly restrain the limbs, they do not realize that sinews are the external correspondence of the Liver. Restraint during an attack prevents sinews from relaxing and extending, eventually causing meridians to be blocked by Wind, leading to permanent disability. The *Neijing* states: "Weakness is called Huan Feng (Lax Wind); pain and heaviness are called Shi Bi (Damp Bi)." There are also cases of four-limb flaccidity, bi-syndrome, and numbness, causing unbearable mild swelling and pain in hands and feet; this is caused by Wind-Toxin Qi. Thus, it is said: "Wind excess leads to diseases of the extremities." Whenever infants have palpitations and restlessness, general body swelling and pain, or inability to move hands and feet voluntarily, this is a sign of Jing Tan (Fright Paralysis). If treatment is delayed, the pathogen flows into the arms, wrists, knees, and shins, forming hard nodules between bone joints, or causing knee swelling with muscle wasting and exposed bones, resembling a crane's knee (He Xi). This may become paralysis or sores, named He Xi Hou (Crane Knee Syndrome). For these manifestations, sweating therapy should be used first to open the pores (Cou Li), thereby eliminating Wind-Heat and Dampness. Use Baijie San (Hundred-Resolving Powder) combined with Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria), adding double the amount of Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), decocted with water, ginger, and scallion, aiming for slight sweating. Using Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) for dispersal is even better. Subsequently, use Fangji Tang (Stephania Decoction), Qufeng San (Wind-Expelling Powder), or Duhuo Tang (Angelicae Pubescentis Decoction) plus Sangjisheng (Taxilli Caulis et Ramulus). Fangfeng Tang (Saposhnikoviae Decoction) or Heihu Dan (Black Tiger Pill) made into small pills taken intermittently can also be used. This ensures Wind does not generate and Phlegm does not form, facilitating recovery. If sores or boils develop with severe pain, use Heiqianniu (Pharbitidis Semen), half raw and half stir-fried, slightly crushed, taken with Wu-Liu Jiu (non-grain alcohol) mixed with Wuling San to eliminate flowing Cold-Damp, resolving swelling and toxicity. If feces are closed and unpassable, this indicates internal accumulation of Wind-Heat, manifesting as red-purple right cheek and floating, solid, slippery pulses on the right hand three positions. Wuhe Tang (Five-Harmonizing Decoction), Danggui San (Angelica Sinensis Powder), or Zhike Wan (Citrus Aurantium Pill) are appropriate. Dosage adjustments require clinical judgment; sticking rigidly to one formula is not the way of a good physician. For the aforementioned conditions, Paifeng Tang (Wind-Expelling Decoction) should be taken intermittently.
[Xue Shi] He Xi Feng (Crane Knee Wind) is characterized by gradually thinning legs and increasingly thick knees, resembling a crane's knee. This arises from congenital insufficiency of the Kidney Meridian, compounded by external pathogens. Initially, there is pain inside the knee with no external color change, and difficulty in flexion and extension. If, after one or two months, the swelling becomes red and suppurates, it is treatable. If the swelling is hard, white, and non-suppurating, it is difficult to treat. Early stages are treated primarily with Dafangfeng Tang (Great Wind-Expelling Decoction), assisted by Yiqi Yangrong Tang (Tonify Qi and Nourish Blood Decoction). When pus forms, Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Supplement the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) is primary, assisted by Dafangfeng Tang. Do not use Shixuan (Ten Acupoints) or Liuqi (Flowing Qi) medicines. If there is no ulceration, no healing, or fever, tonifying and regulating the Spleen and Stomach is best; otherwise, it will degenerate into a fatal condition.
