If the white sclera (Bai Zhu) has many red streaks, and there is excessive discharge, tearing, and a gritty sensation making it difficult to open the eyes, what is the cause? The answer is: After the onset of eye disease, one often suffers from wind-cold invasion, leading to stagnation of Qi and Blood, obstruction of the nine orifices, resulting in deficiency of Lung Qi and hyperactivity of Heart Fire. Consequently, Heart Blood harasses Lung Metal. It is appropriate to apply Zhenzhu Huye Gao (Pearl Tiger Liquid Ointment) to the eyes and take He Xue Bu Qi Yin (Blood-Nourishing and Qi-Supplementing Decoction).

If the eye discharge and tears resemble pus, with redness, swelling, and blurred vision, what is the reason? The answer is: Kidney deficiency and Heart deficiency, termed "Long Hu Jiao Kun" (Dragon and Tiger Interlocked in Distress). It is appropriate to take Kanli Wan (Kanli Pill) and Bushen Wan (Kidney-Supplementing Pill) (formula see Question 11), and apply Tuiyun San (Cloud-Pushing Powder) to the eyes (formula see Question 14).

If the eyes shed cold tears upon exposure to wind, with excessive membranes (neomata), blurriness, and pain, what is the cause? The answer is: This is Liver Wood generating Heart Fire; the fire is hyperactive while Lung Metal is deficient, thus failing to control Liver Wood, termed "Dong Xi He Zhan" (East-West Battle). It is appropriate to apply Tuiyun San (Cloud-Pushing Powder) to the eyes (formula see Question 14), and take Xiegan San (Liver-Draining Powder) and Budan San (Gallbladder-Supplementing Powder) (formulas see Questions 3 and 4).

Why do both left and right eyes become mutually red? The answer is: This is caused by Blood pathogen attacking and rushing. Liver insufficiency leads to contention between wind and heat, with pathogens moving back and forth between left and right. The pulse shows either excess or deficiency, hence termed "mutual redness." It is appropriate to apply Chitou San (Red-Head Powder) externally, and take Canzhi Wan (Silkworm Paper Pill) and Shaoyao Tang (Peony Decoction).
