Cinnamon Twig (Si Liang, peeled; Acrid, Hot) Licorice Root (Er Liang, honey-fried; Sweet, Neutral)
Take the above two ingredients. Add three Sheng of water. Decoct to obtain one Sheng of liquid. Strain off the dregs and take in a single dose.
The acridity of Cinnamon Twig enters the Lung Meridian and benefits Qi. The sweetness of Licorice Root enters the Spleen Meridian and moderates the Middle Jiao.
Shen Liangchen stated: "In modern times, for this syndrome, Huangqi (Astragalus Root) is used. This shows that the nature and function of Huangqi are not far from those of Guizhi."
After sweating therapy, if the patient experiences palpitations below the umbilicus, indicating an impending Ben Tun (Rushing Pig) attack, Fu Ling Gui Zhi Gan Cao Da Zao Tang (Poria, Cinnamon Twig, Licorice, and Jujube Decoction) is indicated as the primary treatment.
Sweat is the fluid of the Heart. After sweating therapy, palpitations below the umbilicus indicate Heart Qi deficiency with subsequent activation of Kidney Qi. The accumulation disease of the Kidney is named Ben Tun. Upon onset, it rushes from the lower abdomen up to the epigastrium. This is due to rebellious Kidney Qi attempting to invade the Heart. Currently, the palpitations below the umbilicus signify the activation of Kidney Qi, hence it is said to be an impending Ben Tun. Fu Ling Gui Zhi Gan Cao Da Zao Tang is administered to descend the rebellious Kidney Qi.
Poria (Ban Jin; Sweet, Neutral) Licorice Root (San Liang, honey-fried; Sweet, Neutral) Jujube (Fifteen fruits, split; Sweet, Neutral) Cinnamon Twig (Si Liang, peeled)
Take the above four ingredients. Add one Dou of Gan Lan Shui (Gentle Wave Water). First decoct Poria until the volume reduces by two Sheng. Then add the remaining herbs. Decoct to obtain three Sheng of liquid. Strain off the dregs. Take one Sheng warm.
Administer three times daily. Method for preparing Gan Lan Shui: Take two Dou of water, place it in a large basin. Use a ladle to scoop and pour repeatedly until five or six thousand pearl-like droplets form on the surface, chasing each other. Use this water.
Poria eliminates pathogenic factors affecting the Kidney. Cinnamon Twig can treat Ben Tun. The sweetness of Licorice and Jujube nourishes and assists Spleen Earth to pacify Kidney Qi. The reason for using Gan Lan Shui for decoction is that after agitation, the water's nature becomes weak, chosen for its property of not assisting Kidney Qi.
After sweating therapy, if abdominal fullness occurs, Hou Po Sheng Jiang Gan Cao Ban Xia Ren Shen Tang (Magnolia Bark, Ginger, Licorice, Pinellia, and Ginseng Decoction) is indicated.
Abdominal fullness after sweating differs from abdominal fullness after purgation.
Abdominal distension after vomiting and abdominal fullness after purgation are both considered Excess syndromes, indicating that pathogens have entered the interior due to deficiency, resulting in excess. After sweating therapy, the exterior has resolved. Abdominal fullness indicates it is not an Interior Excess condition. It arises from insufficient fluids in the Spleen and Stomach, causing Qi stagnation and obstruction, leading to fullness. This decoction harmonizes the Spleen and Stomach and descends Qi.
