If Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) and Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) are removed and Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix), and Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix) are added, it is named Shen Su Yin (Codonopsis and Perilla Infusion), treating colds in deficient persons affecting the qi level.
Shi Shen Tang (Ten Deities Decoction; from *Ju Fang*), treats headache caused by colds.
Ingredients: Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba, nodes removed, soaked), Ge Gen (Puerariae Radix), Zi Su (Perillae Folium), Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Ju Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (each 1 qian).
Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, roasted) (each 5 fen), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 5 slices), Cong Bai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus, 4 stems).

Crush two of the four herbs into powder, mix with Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) and Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas), grind until paste-like, and combine with powder. Take one pill size like a bullet. Separately crush Gan Sui (Kansui Radix) into powder (1 qian bi), add Bai Mi (Apis Mellifica, 2 he) and water (2 sheng), boil to obtain 1 sheng. Take warm in one dose. Bowel movement occurs after one night. If no movement, take again. Efficacy is indicated by bowel movement. Follow standard medication prohibitions.
Da Xian Xiong Tang (Major Inhibiting the Chest Decoction; from *Yu Han*), treats Re Shi (Heat Excess) Jie Xiong (Chest Binding) with deep, tight pulse, pain in the epigastrium, and hardness upon pressure like stone.
Ingredients: Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang), Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, 3 he), Gan Sui (Kansui Radix, 1 qian bi).
Take water (6 sheng), first boil Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) to obtain 2 sheng, remove dregs, add Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas), boil for one or two boils, add Gan Sui (Kansui Radix) powder. Take 1 sheng warm. Stop subsequent doses once rapid purgation occurs.
Xiao Xian Xiong Tang (Minor Inhibiting the Chest Decoction; from *Yu Han*), treats minor Jie Xiong (Chest Binding) located exactly at the epigastrium, painful upon pressure, with floating, slippery pulse.
Ingredients: Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 3 qian), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 3 he, washed), Gua Lou Shi (Trichosanthis Fructus, 1 piece).
Take water (6 sheng), first boil Gua Lou Shi (Trichosanthis Fructus) to obtain 3 sheng, remove dregs, add other herbs, boil to obtain 2 sheng, remove dregs. Divide into three warm doses.
Cong Bai Xiang Chi Tang (Scallion White and Fermented Soybean Decoction; from *Qian Jin*), treats epidemic Shang Han (Cold Damage) within three days, severe headache as if breaking, and initial Wen Bing (Warm Disease) with irritability and heat.
Ingredients: Cong Bai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus, with roots, one handful), Xiang Chi (Sojae Semen Praeparatum, 3 he).
Decoct these two ingredients with water, add Tong Zi Xiao Bian (Child's Urine, 1 he). Take three times daily. Add Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 2 liang) in autumn and winter. Note: Although the ingredients are light, the effect is remarkable. It is effective for deficient persons with wind-heat, latent qi causing warmth, and postpartum colds. It is comparable to using Fu Long Gan (Dragon's House Earth) for postpartum dysentery. It can determine life and death prognosis and avoids blame. It is truly an excellent remedy for critical conditions.
Jia Jian Cong Bai Xiang Chi Tang (Modified Scallion White and Fermented Soybean Decoction), treats wind-heat in all seasons with cough and sore throat, used as a substitute for Wei Rui Tang when that formula is unsuitable.
This is Cong Bai Xiang Chi Tang with half the amount of Cong Bai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus), plus Wei Rui (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma, 2 qian), Bai Wei (Cynanchi Atrati Radix), Qing Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix) (each 1 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) (each 3 fen), Bai Mi (Apis Mellifica, 3 qian bi).
Wei Rui Tang (Polygonatum Decoction; from *Qian Jin*), treats Feng Wen (Wind-Warmth) with spontaneous sweating and heavy body, and Dong Wen (Winter-Warmth) with fever and cough.
Ingredients: Wei Rui (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma, 1.5 qian), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 2 qian, crushed), Bai Wei (Cynanchi Atrati Radix), Qing Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba, nodes removed, soaked), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, skin and tips removed, crushed), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, roasted), Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (each 1 qian).
Decoct nine ingredients with water. Take three times daily. (Another version includes Ge Gen (Puerariae Radix, 1 qian)). Note: *Qian Jin*'s Wei Rui Tang is a variation of Zhang Zhongjing's Ma Huang Sheng Ma Tang. It is a specific medicine for Dong Wen (Winter-Warmth) cough, dry throat, phlegm binding, fever, and diarrhea. Due to unseasonable warmth in winter, Yang Qi fails to store, affecting the Shao Yin channel. Thus, Wei Rui (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma) is used as the sovereign herb to moisten dryness and stop cough, assisted by Bai Wei (Cynanchi Atrati Radix) and Qing Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix) to descend and drain bitterness and saltiness. This also applies to Spring latent qi causing warmth complicated by wind. Wei Rui (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma) guides the Shao Yin and Jue Yin channels. Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba) is a heavy sweating agent; combined with Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum), it resolves cold-heat binding. If the disease is mild, Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), and Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) may be omitted, replacing them with Cong Bai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) and Xiang Chi (Sojae Semen Praeparatum). If heat is intense and requires opening and draining, Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba) and Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) are essential. This depends on the physician's judgment.
Xi Jiao Di Huang Tang (Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction; from *Qian Jin*), treats Shang Han (Cold Damage) and Wen Bing (Warm Disease) where sweating should have occurred but did not, leading to internal blood stasis, incomplete epistaxis or hematemesis, residual intra-abdominal blood stasis, bloody stool with yellow complexion, or epigastric pain.
Ingredients: Xi Jiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix, soaked in wine, pounded separately), Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (equal parts).
Decoct four ingredients with water, remove dregs, add Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), boil briefly, filter clear, and take. For forgetfulness and mania, add Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) and Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix). For large pulse with delayed return and false fullness without actual abdominal distension, add Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex). For hematemesis/epistaxis, add Ou Zhi (Nelumbinis Nucis Plumulae Juice? Note: Text says Ou Zhi, likely Lotus Root Juice), Bian Bo (Platycladi Cacumen), Tong Bian (Child's Urine).
Zhu Fu Tang (Pig Skin Decoction; from *Yu Han*), treats Shao Yin (Lesser Yin) latent heat causing sore throat.
Ingredients: Zhu Fu (Sus Scrofa Domestica Cutis, 5 liang, scraped surface after soaking in hot water).
Decoct with water, filter dregs, add Bai Mi (Apis Mellifica) and Bai Fen (Rizi Starch), boil until fragrant, mix well. Take six warm doses.
Huang Lian E Jiao Tang (Coptis and Donkey-Hide Gelatin Decoction; from *Yu Han*), treats heat damaging Yin blood causing rectal bleeding.
Ingredients: Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 2.5 qian), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 1 qian), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix, 2 qian), E Jiao (Colla Corii Asini, 3 qian), Ji Zi Huang (Galli Ovi Yolk, 1 raw).
Decoct first three ingredients (Note: Text implies decocting herbs then adding gelatin/egg), remove dregs, melt E Jiao (Colla Corii Asini) slightly cool, mix in Ji Zi Huang (Galli Ovi Yolk) evenly, and take.
Ge Gen Huang Qin Huang Lian Tang (Kudzu, Scutellaria, and Coptis Decoction; from *Yu Han*), treats persistent diarrhea due to mistaken purgation, with rapid pulse, wheezing, and sweating.
Ingredients: Ge Gen (Puerariae Radix, 0.5 liang), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 2 qian), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 3 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, roasted, 2 qian).
First boil Ge Gen (Puerariae Radix), then add other herbs, remove dregs. Divide into two warm doses.
Ren Zhong Huang San (Human Middle Yellow Powder), treats Ge Da Wen (Nodular Warmth).
Ingredients: Ren Zhong Huang (Indicis Humanae Stercoris Preparatio, 1 liang), Xiong Huang (Realgar), Chen Sha (Cinnabaris) (each 1 qian).
Grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, swallow with Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) and Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix) decoction. Take three times daily and twice at night.
Dao Chi Xie Xin Tang (Guide Out the Red and Drain the Heart Decoction), treats heat transmitting to the Hand Shao Yin (Heart) channel causing mental confusion.
Ingredients: Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, wine-washed), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, wine-washed), Shan Zhi (Gardeniae Fructus, ginger-processed, charred black), Hua Shi (Talcum, crushed), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Xi Jiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, raw), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, heart removed), Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood) (each 1 qian), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 3 slices), Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus, 3 pieces, split), Deng Xin (Junci Medulla, one handful).
Decoct with water, take hot. This decoction specifically treats heat transmitting to the Hand Shao Yin Heart channel in Shang Han (Cold Damage). It takes Xie Xin Tang (Drain the Epigastrium Decoction) from *Jin Gui Yao Lue* as the base. Since heat is upper rather than lower, and in Qi rather than Blood, Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) is removed, replaced by Shan Zhi (Gardeniae Fructus) to clear Pericardium heat, Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) and Xi Jiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu) to relieve Lung/Stomach irritability, Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), and Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood) to calm the Spirit of the Sovereign. Hua Shi (Talcum) guides the "Guide Out the Red" action; Ginger and Jujube act as messengers to scatter fire. Using Xi Jiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu) corresponds to Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) in Dao Chi San (Guide Out the Red Powder); using Hua Shi (Talcum) corresponds to Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis) in Dao Chi San (Guide Out the Red Powder). Although it lacks the ingredients of Dao Chi San (Guide Out the Red Powder), its efficacy is contained within. I have seen contemporary physicians fear Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) aids fire and remove it. This is akin to sending a hungry, exhausted person to fight a powerful enemy.
