Treats Ying-Blood deficiency with heat.
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root, 2 qian) Dang Gui Shen (Body of Angelica Sinensis Root, 1 qian) Bai Shao Yao (White Peony Root, 1.5 qian) Chuan Xiong (Szechwan Lovage Rhizome, 0.8 fen)
The above four ingredients. Decoct in water. Take warm. Contraindicated for those who are obese and have much damp-phlegm, as well as for those with vomiting/nausea, poor appetite, and loose stools.
Zeng Sun Si Wu Tang (Modified Four Substances Decoction, from *Ju Fang*): Treats blood deficiency fever, poor appetite, and loose stools.
Remove Shu Di Huang from Si Wu Tang. Add Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Pao Jiang (Processed Ginger).
Jia Jian Si Wu Tang (Modified Four Substances Decoction): Treats amenorrhea due to blood stasis, and knotting pain in the lower abdomen.
Replace Bai Shao Yao with Chi Shao Yao (Red Peony Root) in Si Wu Tang. Add San Leng (Burreed Tuber), Peng Ze (Curcuma Zedoaria Rhizome), Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark), Gan Qi Hui (Ash of Dried Lacquer).
Si Wu Tang (Four Black Decoction - Note: Text says Si Wu Tang but ingredients suggest a variation often called Si Wu Tang or similar; context implies a specific modification named Si Wu here, likely referring to a formula with Wu Yao etc., but strictly translating the name provided): Treats qi stagnation within blood, and urgent pain in the lower abdomen.
Add Wu Yao (Lindera Root), Xiang Fu (Cyperus Rhizome), Gan Cao (Licorice Root) to Si Wu Tang.
Si Shen San (Four Spirit Powder): Treats postpartum blood deficiency, or abdominal pain due to blood stasis.
Remove Shu Di Huang from Si Wu Tang. Add Pao Jiang (Processed Ginger). Grind into powder. Take one fang cun bi with warm wine.
Jin Gui Dang Gui Shao Yao San (Angelica and Peony Powder from the Golden Cabinet): Treats various pains in the abdomen.
Remove Shu Di Huang from Si Wu Tang. Add Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Fu Ling (Poria), Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome). Grind into powder. Take one fang cun bi with wine. Three times daily.
Dang Gui San (Angelica Powder): Treats fetal unrest during pregnancy.
Remove Shu Di Huang from Si Wu Tang. Add Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome). Grind into powder. Take one fang cun bi with water. Three times daily.
Qian Jin Xiong Tang (Thousand Gold Ligusticum Decoction): Treats postpartum metrorrhagia, with continuous bleeding.
Replace Shu Di Huang with Gan Di Huang (Dried Rehmannia Root) in Si Wu Tang. Add Huang Qi (Astragalus Root), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger), Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit). If in summer after menstruation, there is continuous red and white discharge, remove Di Huang. Add Du Zhong (Eucommia Bark), Ren Shen (Ginseng Root).
San Huang Bu Xue Tang (Three Yellows Blood-Nourishing Decoction): Treats night fever and spontaneous sweating due to severe blood deficiency.
Add Sheng Di Huang (Fresh Rehmannia Root), Huang Qi (Astragalus Root), Sheng Ma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex) to Si Wu Tang.
Si Wu Er Lian Tang (Four Substances with Two Coptises Decoction): Treats "Chong Yang Wu Yin" (Excess Yang and Deficiency of Yin), causing fever day and night.
Add Xuan Huang Lian (Coptis Chinensis Rhizome), Hu Huang Lian (Picrorhiza Rhizome) to Si Wu Tang. Note: This formula was originally established for "Chong Yang Wu Yin" and day-night fever. It is suitable only when fire pathogen is extremely hyperactive in the Yin aspect. Because the Yang pathogen's blazing power is intense, it is called "Chong Yang"; Yin Qi desires to perish, which is "Wu Yin". This does not refer to true Yin deficiency requiring tonification. Generally, Yang is whole and Yin is half; Yang can command Yin, hence fever occurs day and night. If Yin Qi itself were diseased, there would absolutely be no logic for fever in the Yang aspect during the morning. I often see contemporary physicians use this to treat deficiency consumption steaming-heat and blood deficiency fever. Those who take it invariably suffer vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. How do they not know that the original text of the formula treats "fever," not "steaming-heat"? Heat arising externally, though lingering in Yin, is actually an exogenous pathogen. Heat steaming internally, where Yin cannot assist Yang, belongs to chronic deficiency. Can one confuse treatments without differentiation? For Yin deficiency steaming-heat, there is Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia); for blood deficiency fever, there is Dang Gui Bu Xue Tang (Angelica Blood-Nourishing Decoction). Why rely on this formula?
Da Qin Jiao Tang (Great Ligusticum Decoction): Treats wind-stroke where there are no exterior Six Channels manifestations and no interior obstruction of urination or defecation. It is suitable for nourishing blood to moisten sinews; when blood flows, wind extinguishes itself.
Add Qin Jiao (Gentiana Macrophylla Rhizome), Sheng Di Huang (Fresh Rehmannia Root), Qiang Huo (Notopterygium Rhizome), Du Huo (Angelica Pubescens Root), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root), Xi Xin (Asarum Root), Fu Ling (Poria), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Bai Zhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Gan Cao (Licorice Root) to Si Wu Tang.
Zhang Jing Yue said: In *Ji Yao*, regarding Da Qin Jiao Tang, it is stated that it treats wind-stroke with no exterior Six Channels manifestations and no interior urinary/fecal obstruction. Thus, weak blood fails to nourish sinews; it is appropriate to nourish blood so sinews become prosperous naturally, using Da Qin Jiao Tang and Qiang Huo Yu Feng Tang (Notopterygium Wind-Expelling Decoction) as main treatments. Although Da Qin Jiao Tang contains blood-nourishing herbs, half of them are cold and dispersing agents. Since there is no exterior pathogen of the Six Channels, why use dispersing agents? Since there is no obstructing fire pathogen, why use cold agents? With so many cold and dispersing agents, can they truly nourish blood-Qi and strengthen sinews and bones? Da Qin Jiao Tang is already questionable; Qiang Huo Yu Feng Tang is even more unacceptable. I do not know what intent the users of this method have.
Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang (Angelica Pubescens and Taxillus Decoction, from *Qian Jin Fang*): Treats wind-bi causing heavy pain in the waist and legs.
Add Du Huo (Angelica Pubescens Root), Sang Ji Sheng (Taxillus Branch), Du Zhong (Eucommia Bark), Niu Xi (Achyranthes Root), Xi Xin (Asarum Root), Qin Jiao (Gentiana Macrophylla Rhizome), Fu Ling (Poria), Gui Xin (Cinnamon Twig Heart), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root), Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Gan Cao (Licorice Root) to Si Wu Tang.
*Gu Jin Lu Yan* lacks Sang Ji Sheng but has Xu Duan (Dipsacus Root); *Zhou Hou* lacks Sang Ji Sheng, Ren Shen, Gan Cao, Dang Gui, but has Fu Zi (Aconite Lateral Root). Suitable for postpartum abdominal pain preventing movement, and spasmodic pain in waist and legs preventing flexion and extension, with bi weakness. It is suitable to take this decoction.
Shi Wei Cuo San (Ten-Ingredient Cut Powder): Treats wet-bi causing pain throughout the body.
Add Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Fu Zi (Aconite Lateral Root), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root), Fu Ling (Poria), Huang Qi (Astragalus Root), Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark) to Si Wu Tang. This is essentially Shi Quan Da Bu Tang (Ten Complete Great Tonifying Decoction), removing the sweet-slowing Qi-tonifying effects of Ren Shen and Gan Cao, and adding Fu Zi and Fang Feng to unblock interior and exterior.
Yu Zhu San (Jade Candle Powder): Treats constipation due to blood-heat.
Replace Shu Di Huang with Sheng Di Huang (Fresh Rehmannia Root) in Si Wu Tang. Add Sheng Gan Cao (Raw Licorice Root), Jiu Da Huang (Rhubarb processed with wine), Xuan Ming Fen (Mirabilite), Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger). *Wan Quan Fang* lacks Da Huang and Ming Fen, substituting Qing Pi (Citrus Reticulata Green Peel) and Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus).
Jiao Ai Tang (Donkey-hide Gelatin and Mugwort Decoction): Treats sinking menstruation with bleeding, and persistent fetal leakage in pregnant women.
Use Gan Di Huang (Dried Rehmannia Root) in Si Wu Tang. Add E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Ai Ye (Mugwort Leaf). Decoct with half clear wine and half water. (Another version adds Gan Jiang/Dried Ginger.) *Qian Jin Fang* lacks Di Huang and Shao Yao.
Ding Xiang Jiao Ai Tang (Clove Donkey-hide Gelatin and Mugwort Decoction): Treats menstrual leakage accompanied by leukorrhea.
Add Ding Xiang (Clove), E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), Ai Ye (Mugwort Leaf) to Si Wu Tang.
Jia Wei Xiang Fu Wan (Modified Cyperus Pill): Treats retrograde menstruation, spontaneous sweating, fetal leakage, and bleeding.
Original Si Wu Tang uses Shu Di Huang 8 liang, Dang Gui and Shao Yao 4 liang each, Xiong 3 liang. Add Si Zhi Xiang Fu (Four-Processed Cyperus Rhizome) 1 jin, Ze Lan Ye (Lycopus Leaf), Ou Hai Gu (Cuttlefish Bone) 6 liang each. Grind into powder. Use Fu Mai Mian (Floating Wheat Flour), wine, vinegar, and water to make a paste for pills, sized like mung beans. Take 100 pills per dose, morning and evening. Take with warm wine or boiling water as desired.
Ai Jian Wan (Mugwort Decoction Pill, from *Ju Fang*): Treats women's metrorrhagia and dripping, red and white leukorrhea, and lower abdominal pain.
Original Si Wu Tang uses Dang Gui, Di Huang, Shao Yao 2 liang each, Chuan Xiong 1 liang. Add Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Shi Chang Pu (Acorus Rhizome, stir-fried), Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit, using open ones, vinegar-fried) 1 liang each. Grind into powder. Use Qi Ai (Qicheng Mugwort) 4 liang, decoct in wine for thick juice. Mix with sticky rice paste to form pills, sized like wutong seeds. Take 100 pills per dose, with pure wine. If adding Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark) and Shu Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root) 1 liang each, and Xiang Fu 4 liang, it is named Ai Fu Wan (Mugwort and Cyperus Pill).
Jin Gui Wen Jing Tang (Golden Cabinet Warming Meridian Decoction): Treats irregular menstruation, metrorrhagia, and leukorrhea, as well as dry lips and mouth. Also treats obstructed menstruation, cough, and hematochezia, which is lung heat transferring to the large intestine.
Remove Shu Di Huang from Si Wu Tang. Add E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark), Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit), Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber), Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger). If adding Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), it is named Da Wen Jing Tang (Great Warming Meridian Decoction). This formula is based on Jiao Ai Tang. Because deficient fire flares upward causing dry lips and mouth, Mai Men Dong is used. Because turbid dampness seeps downward causing intermittent leukorrhea, Ban Xia is used.
