Treats edema with a sensation of fullness in the epigastrium resembling a plate, with edges like a rotating dish.
Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange Fruit, 10 pieces) Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 2 liang)
Decoct the above two ingredients in water. Take warm in three divided doses. When the abdomen becomes soft, it indicates that the pathogenic factor has dissipated.
Zhiju Wan (Bitter Orange and Atractylodes Pill): Treats impaired spleen transportation and transformation (Pi Bu Jian Yun), where food is not digested.
In Zhiju Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Atractylodes Decoction - *Note: Text says Zhiju Tang but ingredients are Zhi Shi and Bai Zhu, standard name is Zhiju Tang*), use Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange Fruit) 1 liang and Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) 2 liang. Wrap in lotus leaves with rice, cook into a meal, and form pills. Take 70-80 pills with rice soup.
Haizang stated: Dongyuan's Zhiju Wan originated from Zhang Zhongjing's Zhiju Tang. In his later years, with advanced Daoist cultivation, he used rice cooked in lotus leaves to form pills, aiming to retain residue in the stomach. Taiwu stated: The *Jin Gui Yao Lue* treats edema with epigastric fullness like a plate, hence using a decoction to purge the pathogen; Dongyuan treats impaired spleen transportation, hence using a pill to slowly resolve the pathogen. Both formulas have profound meanings and should not be interchanged.
Xiangsha Zhiju Wan (Amomum and Immature Bitter Orange Pill): Treats qi stagnation and retained food failing to digest.
Add Mu Xiang (Vladimiria Root) and Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus), each 0.5 liang, to Zhiju Wan.
Ju Ban Zhiju Wan (Citrus Peel and Pinellia Pill): Treats indigestion caused by the combined accumulation of phlegm and food.
Add Ju Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) and Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), each 0.5 liang, to Zhiju Wan.
Shenshi Xiaoyin Wan (Deep Master's Drink-Dissipating Pill): Treats chest fullness, retching, borborygmus (water sounds in the abdomen), and loss of appetite due to retained fluid.
Add Fu Ling (Poria) 1 liang and Pao Jiang (Prepared Ginger) 0.5 liang to Zhiju Wan. Mix with ginger juice, use Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven) boiled paste as a binder, and form pills the size of wu zi (loquat seeds). Take 30-40 pills with light ginger soup or boiling rice soup at will.
Commentary: This formula is essentially Shen Zhuo Tang (Kidney Fixing Decoction) minus Gan Cao (Licorice Root) to remove its moderating effect, and replacing Bai Zhu with Zhi Shi to guide stagnant qi.
Treats retained food in the stomach failing to digest; suitable for those eating coarse food.
Cang Zhu (Coarse Atractylodes Rhizoma, soaked in rice water, peeled, stir-fried with sesame oil until yellow, 4 liang) Hou Po (Magnolia Bark, peeled, stir-fried with ginger juice) Chen Pi (Aged Tangerine Peel, soaked, remove white pith) Gan Cao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, each 3 liang)
Grind the above four ingredients into powder. Take 4-5 qian per dose, add 3 slices of fresh ginger, decoct in water, and take warm.
Xianglian Pingwei San (Coptis and Stomach-Pacifying Powder): Treats fever and abdominal pain with diarrhea due to food stagnation.
Add Jiang Zhi Chao Chuan Lian (Stir-fried Coptis Rhizoma with ginger juice) 2 liang and Mu Xiang (Vladimiria Root) 1 liang to Pingwei San (Stomach-Pacifying Powder).
Bu Huan Jin Zhengqi San (Golden Exchange Upright Qi Powder, Bureau Formula): Treats epidemic qi invasion, cold complicated by food stagnation.
Add Huo Xiang (Agastache Herb) and Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) to Pingwei San. For epidemic qi, add Dou Chi (Fermented Soybean).
Huoxiang Zhengqi San (Agastache Upright Qi Powder, Bureau Formula): Treats maladaptation to local environment, cold complicated by epidemic qi and food stagnation.
Replace Bai Zhu with Cang Zhu in Pingwei San, and add Huo Xiang (Agastache Herb), Zi Su Ye (Perilla Leaf), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), Bai Zhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), Jie Geng (Platycodon Root), Da Fu Pi (Areca Peel), Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger), and Da Zao (Jujube). (Ancient version lacks Da Fu Pi but includes Cang Zhu).
Renshen Yangwei Tang (Ginseng Nourishing Stomach Decoction, Bureau Formula): Treats food stagnation with distension and fullness, alternating chills and fever with痞疟 (pi malaria).
Add Huo Xiang (Agastache Herb), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Fu Ling (Poria), Cao Guo (Tsaoko Fruit), Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger), Da Zao (Jujube), and Wu Mei (Mume Fruit) to Pingwei San.
Canling Pingwei San (Ginseng and Poria Stomach-Pacifying Powder): Treats indigestion and loose stools due to spleen deficiency.
Add Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) and Fu Ling (Poria) to Pingwei San.
Baifeng Gao (White Phoenix Paste): Treats congenital insufficiency in youth, damaged by irregular diet (hunger and overeating), leading to deficiency consumption, emaciation, afternoon tidal fever, abdominal distension with急促 breathing, and a wiry-rapid pulse.
Take 4 liang of Pingwei San, add Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) and Fu Ling (Poria), each 1 liang, and Jing Zao (Beijing Jujube) 4 liang, pitted. Insert the ginseng and poria individually into the jujubes. Place inside the belly of a black-billed white duck (male uses female duck, female uses male duck). Prepare according to the method for Wuguji Wan (Black-Bone Chicken Pill).
This is a formula by Ge Kejiu. Formed into pills with steamed bread dough, taking advantage of the slow retention in the stomach to harmonize injured middle qi. Essentially, Ren Shen, Fu Ling, and Pingwei San are not herbs that tonify kidney water. I have used this to treat conditions of internal injury from diet, disharmony of middle qi, fever, and emaciation, often achieving efficacy. The name "Baifeng" (White Phoenix) derives from the character composition of "Fu" (wild duck) and "Niao" (bird). The term "Gao" (paste) implies fat/nourishment, hiding a subtle method.
Houpo Tang (Magnolia Bark Decoction): Treats spleen and stomach deficiency-cold causing distension, and intermittent abdominal pain.
Remove Cang Zhu from Pingwei San, add Fu Ling (Poria) and Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger). Jiegu's version adds Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange Fruit), Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger), and Da Zao (Jujube).
Chushi Tang (Dampness-Removing Decoction): Treats damp-heat causing distension, fullness, and anorexia.
Add Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Huo Xiang (Agastache Herb), Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger), and Da Zao (Jujube) to Pingwei San.
Shengyang Chushi Tang (Yang-Raising Dampness-Removing Decoction): Treats spleen and stomach weakness causing inability to eat, borborygmus, and diarrhea.
Remove Hou Po (Magnolia Bark) from Pingwei San, add Qiang Huo (Notopterygium Rhizome), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizome), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Zhu Ling (Polyporus), Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome), Mai Ya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus), and Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven).
Wuji San (Five Accumulations Powder, Bureau Formula): Treats cold complicated by cold food intake during a cold, injuring spleen yin, affecting both exterior and interior.
Add Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba), Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Pao Jiang (Prepared Ginger), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Fu Ling (Poria), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus), Jie Geng (Platycodon Root), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Radix), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Rhizoma), and Bai Zhi (Angelica Dahurica Root) to Pingwei San. Take 4-5 qian per dose, add 3 slices of fresh ginger and 3 stalks of scallion white, decoct in water, strain, and take hot. Cover with blankets to induce slight sweating.
Tiaozhong Tang (Middle-Harmonizing Decoction): Treats food stagnation resembling shaoyang syndrome, and yin macules on hands, feet, and limbs.
Add Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange Fruit), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus), Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven), and Cao Guo (Tsaoko Fruit) to Pingwei San. Decoct in water, strain, and mix with ground Mu Xiang (Vladimiria Root) before taking.
Weiling Tang (Stomach-Wu Ling Decoction): Treats food stagnation, edema, and diarrhea where pulse and symptoms indicate excess.
Decoct Pingwei San (Stomach-Pacifying Powder) and Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) together with raw ingredients. Pingwei San originally pacifies excessive stomach qi. If the cause is spleen earth deficiency failing to transport, one must slightly rely on Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) and Fu Ling (Poria), such as in Yangwei Tang. However, if earth decline fails to separate clear from turbid leading to swelling, and qi stagnation cannot tolerate Ren Shen and Bai Zhu, making Lizhong Tang inappropriate, then combine with Wuling San to strengthen the transportation of water and earth. This is as fixed as Zhengqi San using Su Ye and Huo Xiang to disperse invading pathogens.
Zaofan Wan (Alum and Jujube Pill): Treats jaundice due to food stagnation.
Add Zao Fan (Alumen) to Pingwei San (wrap in flour, roast red). Boil jujube flesh and form pills. This is the first potent formula for dissipating retained stagnation, far more urgent than Pingwei San. Those consuming rich foods must use caution and not apply it recklessly. After taking, press down with grain food, otherwise vomiting may occur.
Zhike Tang (Aurantii Fructus Decoction): Treats abdominal distension and急促 breathing after mistakenly administering Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) and Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) for variola/rubella.
Remove Cang Zhu from Pingwei San, add Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus).
