Chuanwu Tou (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata) is the mother plant of Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata).
Yuanzhi (Radix Polygalae) and Mangcao (Herba Illicii Coriacei) act as its guiding herbs.
It is incompatible with Yitang (Maltose), Heidou (Black Soybean), and Lengshui (Cold Water).
It is adverse to Lilu (Radix Veratri Nigri).
It is contraindicated with Douzhi (Fermented Soybean Juice).
It is chemically antagonistic with Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), Gualou (Fructus Trichosanthis), Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae), Bailian (Radix Ampelopsis Japonicae), and Baiji (Rhizoma Bletillae).
Its toxicity can be subdued by Dansha (Cinnabaris) and Pishi (Arsenolite).
Pungent, hot. Highly toxic.
It dispels cold-dampness, unblocks meridians and scatters wind, assists yang and retreats yin.
Its efficacy is similar to Hei Fuzi (Prepared Black Aconite Root) but slightly milder.
Hei Fuzi restores yang and expels cold; Chuanwu Tou warms the spleen and removes wind.
Combined with Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori), decocted, dried, and pounded into pills, it treats edema and fullness caused by Yin-type water retention. (Contraindicated with greasy food, alcohol, wheat products, pork, and fish.)
Combined with raw Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae), ground, it treats cold pain in the heart and abdomen due to damp-heat stagnation and hernia. (Adding fried Huixiang (Fructus Foeniculi), scallion, and wine for administration enhances efficacy.)
The processing method is the same as that of Fuzi.
Chuanwu Tou is also known as Lou Lanzi.
Its incompatibilities and adversities are the same as those of Fuzi.
Pungent, extremely hot, highly toxic.
It primarily disperses qi in the four limbs and fills/penetrates the skin and hair; it is a key herb for treating wind disorders.
Those growing attached to Wutou (Radix Aconiti) and emerging upwards are called Cizi (Ramulus Aconiti); those growing smallest are called Lou Lanzi.
The processing method is the same as that of Fuzi.
Yuanzhi acts as its guiding herb.
It is adverse to Fubi (Herba Desmodii Styracifolii).
Contraindicated with Douzhi (Fermented Soybean Juice).
Pungent, hot, highly toxic.
It opens the nine orifices and benefits the skin.
It treats cold bi-syndrome caused by wind-phlegm, induces sweating, and can stop spontaneous sweating of the yin areas; it is also an important herb for treating wind disorders.
Those initially planted without producing Fuzi or Cizi, which grow independently for several years, are called Tianxiong (Radix Aconiti Kusnezoffii).
The processing method is the same as that of Fuzi.
Its incompatibilities, adversities, antagonisms, and guiding relationships are the same as those of Chuanwu Tou.
Pungent, hot, highly toxic; it is a drug of extreme toxicity.
It should not be used lightly unless for stubborn and acute wind diseases.
When combined with Badou (Semen Crotonis), pounded and applied topically, it treats Dingdu (carbuncles/toxic sores) (causing the root to extract itself).
Boiled into a paste with vinegar and applied topically to treat Dingdu (the root extracts itself the next day).
Those wild-growing in other places are called Caowu Tou (Radix Aconiti Kusnezoffii).
They may be used raw, processed, boiled together with Wu Dadou (Black Soybean) to remove toxicity, or boiled thoroughly with Tofu.
Pounded whole including stems, filtered juice dried to obtain a paste, named She Wang (Aconite Paste), used to make poison arrows for hunting birds and beasts; victims fall within ten steps.
Humans struck by it will die; detoxification should be administered promptly.
For poisoning by She Wang, detoxify using Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Lanzhi (Indigo Naturalis Juice), Xiaodouye (Leaf of Vigna angularis), Fuping (Herba Lemnae), and Jicai (Herba Capsellae Bursa-Pastoris) with cold water.
