(The Six-Syllable Exhalation Method is the key principle for treating diseases. The standard approach follows the orthodox path, while the variable approach adapts to specific circumstances.)
"Xu" (Hissing), corresponds to the Liver; practice it in Spring to treat Liver diseases.
"He" (Laughing), corresponds to the Heart; practice it in Summer to treat Heart diseases.
"Hu" (Blowing), corresponds to the Spleen; practice it throughout the four seasons to treat Spleen diseases.
"Si" (Purring), corresponds to the Lungs; practice it in Autumn to treat Lung diseases.
"Chui" (Blowing out), corresponds to the Kidneys; practice it in Winter to treat Kidney diseases.
"Xi" (Smiling/Jeering), corresponds to the Sanjiao (Triple Burner); practice it for Heat diseases.
Regarding the above Six-Syllable Mantra, the *Jade Axis Classic* from the *Daoist Canon* states: The Qi of the five Zang organs and six Fu organs of ordinary people is scorched by the five flavors (sour, bitter, sweet, pungent, salty) and disturbed by the seven emotions (joy, anger, worry, thought, grief, fear, fright) and six desires. Over time, this accumulates into illness, causing disease throughout the entire body.
Therefore, the Supreme Elder (Taishang Laojun) pitied them and used the Six-Syllable Qi Mantra to treat diseases of the five Zang and six Fu organs. When practicing this method, the environment should be quiet, with warm curtains and thick mattresses in the room. Sit cross-legged in a lotus position, and first perform the preceding Dynamic Qigong exercises briefly. For beginners in Static Qigong,
to prevent poor blood circulation, one should first perform Dynamic Qigong before proceeding to Static Qigong. After seven days of practice, there is no need to continue with Dynamic Qigong. After completing the Dynamic Qigong, immediately seal the ears, eyes, mouth, and teeth, and visualize one's own body. One should feel as cool and pure as an ice pot,
and have a mind as bright and calm as the autumn moon. Wait for a long time until breathing harmonizes and blood flow stabilizes. Then, gently exhale turbid air once or twice from the mouth, and then proceed according to the aforementioned seasonal rhythms.
For example, in Spring, one must recite the character "Xu" in a low voice, ensuring that one does not hear it with one's own ears. If heard, the breath becomes coarse, and coarse breath may lead to the leakage of Qi. Once the sound of "Xu" fades from hearing and the breath is exhausted, inhale clear Qi through the nose, guiding it into the corresponding meridian (Liver Meridian) and finally to the Dantian (Energy Center). Each inhalation and exhalation cycle should be performed twenty-four or thirty-six times or more. This is the standard method of following the seasonal operations.
For instance, if one suffers from eye diseases in Autumn, which correspond to the Liver, one should practice the "Xu" syllable. Similarly, if one suffers from Deficiency Jaundice in Spring, one should practice the "Hu" syllable. These are methods of adaptive treatment for specific conditions.
However, for Lung diseases specifically, since the Lungs govern Qi, this Six-Syllable method is not suitable. Instead, one should specialize in the practice of swallowing saliva (Yin Jin), which rapidly reduces Fire.
Anyone cultivating this Daoist practice must choose the Zi hour (11 PM - 1 AM) on a Zi day to begin, with a period of twenty-seven days as one cycle. Symptoms such as deafness, consumptive fatigue (Xu Lao), and drum-like abdominal distension (Gu Ge) will heal suddenly. With prolonged practice, gurgling sounds will naturally be heard in the abdomen, and one will perceive specific visions during internal visualization. All diseases will be eliminated, and spirit and vitality will become abundant.
