To treat Shanghan (Cold Damage) and Shiyi (Seasonal Epidemic), as well as the initial stage of Shangfeng (Wind-Cold Invasion) presenting with headache and fever: Take one scallion head with roots, chop it finely, add one cup of vinegar, and decoct until it resembles thin porridge. Drink one bowl while hot, cover with a blanket, and recovery occurs upon sweating.
Another prescription: To treat Shanghan where sweating has already occurred or not yet occurred, but severe headache feels like bursting: Use 2 liang of fresh ginger and half jin (approx. 500g) of scallion whites with roots. Add two bowls of water, decoct until the liquid is reduced by half, remove the dregs. Divide into three doses.
Another prescription: For the initial onset of Shanghan, food stagnation, alcohol injury, or wind-cold invasion: Take three large bowls of sour pickled vegetable juice, boil for three to five boils. In a draft-free place, drink half a bowl first, then rub the abdomen with hands; drink another half bowl, and rub the abdomen again; continue drinking and rubbing until satisfied, feeling fullness in the heart that cannot be contained. Then use a chicken feather to stimulate the throat to induce vomiting. After vomiting, decoct a spicy soup of scallions and vinegar to drink, cover with clothes and blankets, and recover upon sweating. Alternatively, use boiling water, follow the previous method of drinking, rubbing, and inducing vomiting, which is also effective. Or crush red beetroot to extract juice and drink it.
Another prescription: A Qigong guidance method: Sit cross-legged, interlock fingers of both hands, grasp the Fengchi (GB20) and Fengfu (GV16) acupoints at the back of the head, which are gates for wind pathogens. Bow forward, bringing the head close to the ground. Repeat this nodding motion continuously for about 120 times. Immediately afterwards, administer a spicy soup of scallions and vinegar porridge; relief occurs immediately upon sweating.
Another prescription: To treat continuous epistaxis (nosebleed) due to Shanghan: Use a large handful of flower heads of Imperata cylindrica (Cogon grass); if no flowers are available, use the roots. Decoct in water to make a concentrated juice, take after meals.
To treat Yin Syndrome: Use a large bunch of scallion whites, sized like a tea cup, roll tightly in paper, then slice evenly with a sharp knife into pieces about one finger-thick. Place on the umbilicus (Shenque CV8 area), and moxibustion/ironing with a hot iron. Stop when sweating occurs. If one piece is ineffective, cut another and apply.
Another prescription: To treat Yin Du Shanghan (Yin Toxic Cold Damage): Use powder from mustard seeds, mix with fresh well-water to form a paste like a plaster, apply to the umbilicus. Recovery occurs upon sweating.
Contraindications for Shanghan: After the illness has just subsided, eat only small amounts of millet porridge, maintain a slight hunger, do not overeat; otherwise, relapse will occur. Do not get up early, do not comb hair or wash face, do not speak excessively, do not exert mental or physical effort; violating these leads to relapse. Within 100 days after recovery, when Qi and blood have not yet stabilized, engaging in sexual intercourse results in death. Also avoid eating mutton, chicken, dog meat, fatty meat broths, preserved foods, meat sauces, oil cakes, and wheat/flour products, as these may cause disease recurrence.
To treat Tianxing Bing (Epidemic Disease) with intense heat: Coat earthworms with salt until they dissolve into water, remove mud, and drink. This also treats Laofu (relapse due to exertion after intercourse) or pain from testicular retraction into the abdomen.
Another prescription: For Tianxing Bing with chest oppression/stifling sensation: Crush fine aquatic moss to extract juice and take orally.
Another prescription: To treat Shixing Bing (Seasonal Epidemic Disease) relapsing due to dietary excess shortly after recovery: Use 5 liang of apricot kernels (Xingren), remove skin and tips, decoct in two bowls of vinegar until half remains, take the juice. Cured.
To treat relapse of Shixing Bing due to sexual exhaustion: For male patients, burn the crotch of women's underwear to ash; for female patients, burn the crotch of men's underwear to ash. Take with warm water.
To treat pregnant women suffering from seasonal epidemics causing fetal unrest: Apply mud from the bottom of a well to the soles of the feet (Yongquan KI1).
Another prescription: Use soil from the center of the kitchen stove hearth, grind into fine powder, mix with water and take orally. Also apply to 5 cun above the umbilicus; replace when dry.
To prevent transmission of Tianxing Wenyi (Epidemic Plague): Steam the clothes of the initial patient in a steamer; then the whole family will not be infected. If visiting relatives or neighbors with plague, first smear clear sesame oil in the nostrils before going out. Also insert a rolled paper wick into the nose to induce three to five sneezes, preventing infection.
Another prescription: Grind realgar (Xionghuang) finely, mix with water, dip a brush thickly, and apply inside the nostrils. Even sleeping in the same bed as a patient will not lead to infection. Apply after washing face in the morning and before sleep.
Another prescription: Whenever entering a room where someone has been ill for a long time, press the tongue against the palate, hold breath forcefully for one moment, filling the pores with Qi, so that pathogens cannot attach.
Another prescription: On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, collect Xanthium sibiricum (Cang'er) herbs, dry them in shade, decoct in water, and take orally.
