Treats pulmonary tuberculosis (pulmonary consumption) with heat signs, in patients who cannot tolerate qi-tonifying agents. (This indicates lung deficiency accompanied by fire pathogen, or cough with fever, where yin deficiency is severe. Administering yang-tonifying drugs would further exacerbate the fire and deplete yin further. Thus, although there is a deficiency-consumption disease, warm-tonifying medicines are contraindicated.) Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu) and Fritillariae Bulbus (Beimu), taken in equal parts. Stir-fried and ground into fine powder.
Because excessive fire scorches Lung Metal (the Lung belongs to Metal), causing pulmonary tuberculosis with heat. Cases that can tolerate warm-tonifying treatment are easier to cure; those that cannot tolerate them are difficult to treat. Therefore, this method is established to nourish yin, using Fritillariae Bulbus (Beimu) to resolve phlegm.
Treats macules (skin eruptions) and sore throat. (Macules result from heat in the Yangming Stomach channel. Sore throat results from fire in the Taiyin Lung channel.) Scrophulariae Radix (Xuanshen), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma), and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), taken in equal parts.
Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma) enters the Yangming channel, raises yang and resolves toxicity. Scrophulariae Radix (Xuanshen) enters the Taiyin channel, clears Lung Metal and restrains fire. Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) is sweet and neutral, capable of dispersing and harmonizing, thus it can benefit the throat and dissipate macules.
Remove Scrophulariae Radix (Xuanshen), add Rhinocerotis Cornu (Xijiao), Belamcandae Radix (Shegan), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), and Ginseng Radix (Renshen). This formula is named Yangdu Shengma Decoction. It treats macules caused by Yang-toxin, along with pain in the head, neck, and back, mania, cursing, and swollen throat.
(Jie'an) Treats typhoid fever where heat pathogen has transmitted inward, resulting in interior excess and exterior deficiency, with Yang-toxin macules. (Blood-heat failing to disperse steams onto the skin, forming macules resembling brocade patterns. Purple-black macules indicate extreme heat leading to stomach rot, often fatal. This may be due to misapplying hot medicines for Yang-patterns, or purging too early allowing exterior heat to enter via deficiency, or purging too late leaving heat in the stomach. All these cause macules. There are also Yin-pattern macules: when Yuan-qi is severely deficient, cold hides below, forcing rootless and unanchored yang to float upward, scorching the Lung alone, and transmitting to the skin, appearing as pale red and sparse macules. Da Jianzhong Decoction should be used; misusing cold agents would be dangerous.) Baphicacanthi Cuspidis Folium et Radix (Qingdai), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Rhinocerotis Cornu (Xijiao), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu), Scrophulariae Radix (Xuanshen), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi), Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Shengdihuang), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), Ginseng Radix (Renshen), and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), decocted with Zingiberis Recens Rhizoma (Shengjiang) and Jujubae Fructus (Dazao).
Although macules originate from Stomach heat, they are also assisted by fire from other channels. Baphicacanthi Cuspidis Folium et Radix (Qingdai) and Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) clear Liver fire. Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi) and Scrophulariae Radix (Xuanshen) clear Heart and Lung fire.
(Wuze) Treats Biyuan (chronic rhinitis/sinusitis). (Continuous flow of turbid nasal discharge is called Biyuan. It is caused by wind-heat scorching the brain, causing fluids to leak outward. The Classics state: fluid leakage from the brain becomes nasal discharge. Also: Gallbladder heat transferring to the brain causes nasal congestion, anosmia, and pain. Yuanbing Shi states: just as fire scorches metal, extreme heat transforms into water. Excessive Liver heat causes tearing, excessive Heart heat causes sweating, excessive Spleen heat causes salivation, excessive Lung heat causes nasal discharge, excessive Kidney heat causes spitting saliva. All are caused by extreme heat consuming fluids.) Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi, 1 liang), Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Bohe), and Xanthii Fructus Coriaceus (Xinyi, each 5 qian), and Xanthii Fructus (Caierzi, stir-fried, 2.5 qian), ground into powder. Take 2 qian before meals, mixed with Congbai (scallion white) tea water.
All diseases of the head and face are caused by the failure of Clear Yang to ascend and the counter-flow of Turbid Yin. Baizhi primarily acts on the Hand and Foot Yangming channels, ascending to the head and face, opening orifices, inducing sweating, removing dampness, and reaching the skin.
