(Zhu Danxi) Treats cough with blood in sputum.
Take Qingdai (processed by water flotation), Gualou Ren (seeds of Trichosanthes kirilowii, oil removed), Haishi (calcined pumice, sand removed), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus, stir-fried until black), and Hezi Rou (seed kernel of Terminalia chebula), in equal proportions, grind into fine powder, form pills with honey, and take by holding in the mouth to dissolve. If cough is severe, add Xingren (Prunus armeniaca seed).
When Liver Fire rebels upward, it can scorch Lung Metal, thus causing cough with blood in sputum. Qingdai clears the Liver and regulates blood, dispersing stagnant fire in the five Zang organs. Zhizi cools the Heart and clears the Lungs, directing pathogenic heat downward; these two herbs are used to treat fire. Gualou moistens dryness and lubricates phlegm, serving as a key herb for treating cough. (It clears phlegm-heat in the Upper Jiao and eliminates stagnant heat and turbidity.)
Hezi is added because it can astringe the Lung and calm wheezing due to phlegm. Herbs specifically for stopping bleeding are not used because once the fire subsides, the bleeding will stop naturally.
(The Bureau of People's Welfare Pharmacy Formulary) Treats stagnant heat in the Lung, manifesting as cough, hematemesis (vomiting blood), epistaxis (nosebleed), and lower gastrointestinal bleeding. (Due to stagnant heat in the Lung, cough occurs; if severe, it forces blood upward causing vomiting or nosebleeding. If Lung heat transfers to the Large Intestine, lower bleeding occurs.) Treats painful urinary dysfunction (Lin syndrome) and Xiao Ke (wasting-thirst syndrome). (Lung heat cuts off the source of transformation for the Bladder, causing Lin discomfort; Lung heat causes thirst and excessive drinking, classified as Upper Xiao.) Halitosis (due to Stomach-Spleen heat). Bitter taste in the mouth (due to Liver-Gallbladder heat). Clears the Heart and brightens the eyes.
Take Jimu Ye (also known as Longnao Bohe, Mentha haplocalyx var. argolepis, 1 liang 6 qian), Shengdi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix, 6 qian), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 4 qian), Puhuang (Typhae Pollen), Ejiao (Donkey-hide gelatin), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Yin Chai Hu (Stellariae Radix, 2 qian), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1.5 qian), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), and Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 1 qian).
First, soak Mutong and Chai Hu for two days, decoct to obtain juice. Soak Shengdi Huang and decoct to obtain paste. Then add 3 liang of refined honey, mix well, and form pills. Size: similar to wutong seeds. Dosage: 20 pills per administration.
The Lung’s nature is clear and descending. If it suffers from the evil flames of the Heart or the hyperactivity of the Liver, various symptoms appear. Jimu Ye is light, ascending, and dispersing; it clears the Lung, searches out the Liver, dissipates heat, and regulates blood, thus serving as the Sovereign herb. Shengdi Huang cools the blood; stir-fried Puhuang stops bleeding, together treating various hemorrhages. Chai Hu soothes the Liver and resolves muscular heat; Mutong promotes urination and descends Heart fire; Maidong and Ejiao moisten dryness and clear the Lung. Renshen and Gancao clear heat and harmonize the Spleen. This formula is also designed for cases where heat involves deficiency, hence the slight addition of Renshen and Huangqi. (Yu Jiayan stated that this pill simultaneously resolves heat in both the Qi level and the Blood level.)
