Treats hematemesis (vomiting blood) and epistaxis (nosebleed). (When Yang invades Yin, causing blood heat to move recklessly, this formula is very effective, but it should only be used temporarily.)
Fresh lotus leaf (He Ye), fresh mugwort leaf (Ai Ye), fresh Rehmannia root (Sheng Di Huang), and fresh biota topside leaf (Ce Bai Ye), four ingredients are pounded until mushy, formed into pills the size of a chicken egg. Take one pill per dose, dissolved in boiling water.
In general, regarding Yin disorders, once the fire pathogen is eliminated, the blood returns to its vessels, and hematemesis and epistaxis will heal.
Treats Yin deficiency with internal fire, night sweats, and fever. (What the Heart stores internally is Blood; what emerges externally is Sweat. Sweat is the fluid of the Heart. The Yang of the Zang-Fu organs and the interior/exterior are all governed by the Heart to facilitate their transformations. Fluids are generated where Yang Qi resides, and sweat is excreted where Fire disturbs. Sweat belongs to the Yang of the Heart, while sleep belongs to the Yin of the Kidney. When Yin is deficient and one falls asleep, Yang inevitably congregates there, causing sweating. "Having fire" refers to accompanying symptoms such as flushed face, dry mouth, dry lips, dark urine, heavy voice, and rapid pulse.)
Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) [equal parts], Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) [doubled dose], plus Ma Huang Gen (Ephedrae Herba Caudex).
In cases of Yin deficiency with internal fire, upon falling asleep, the Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) that guards the exterior sinks into the Yin due to deficiency. The fluids at the body surface lose their protective control, resulting in nocturnal sweating. Upon waking, Yang becomes dominant, and Wei Qi returns to the exterior; the exterior becomes solid, and sweating stops. Dang Gui and Di Huang nourish Yin; Huang Qin and Huang Lian clear Fire; Sheng Di Huang and Huang Bo both nourish Yin and clear Fire. Doubling the use of Huang Qi serves to tonify Wei Qi and secure the exterior. (*Zhun Sheng* states: "Yin deficiency causes Yang to congregate, leading to fever and night sweats; Dang Gui Liu Huang Tang plus Gu Pi (Bark of Dogwood Fruit) is suitable. Yang deficiency causes Yin to invade, leading to cold limbs and spontaneous sweating; Huang Qi Jian Zhong Tang is suitable. For severe cases, add Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Root), or use Fu Zi Tang.")
(From *Jin Gui Yao Lue*) Treats failure of the Ming Men (Gate of Life) fire to warm the Earth (Spleen/Stomach), resulting in Spleen-Stomach deficiency-cold, poor appetite, diarrhea, and abdominal distension. [(Zhang Zhongjing said: For Qi deficiency with phlegm, Shen Qi Wan is suitable to tonify and expel.] Wu Jiaoshan said: Ba Wei Wan treats the root cause of phlegm.] Or for Yuan Yang deficiency and exhaustion, impotence, cold essence, pain in the umbilical and abdominal regions, frequent urination at night, soreness of the knees and weakness of the waist, blurred vision, etc. As Wang Bing stated, "Benefit the source of Fire to eliminate Yin shadows," this is suitable for those with a weak Chi (Cun Cun) pulse. [(It may also be effective for those whose pulse appears forceful but is actually false.)]
Shu Di Huang (Use Huai Di Huang from Huaiqing. Wash to remove sand and soil, steam for one day in a willow-wood steamer over a clay pot, sun-dry, then steam and dry again, repeating nine times. Before use, pound into a paste, 8 liang.) Shan Yu Rou (Corni Fructus, aged ones moistened with wine), Huai Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 4 liang), Fu Ling (Poria, mixed with milk), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma, 3 liang), Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex, peeled), Shu Fu Zi (Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix, 1 liang). Honey pills. (Wu Yiluo noted: Honey has a sweet and slow nature; using pig kidneys boiled until soft to make pills seems more appropriate.) Take on an empty stomach with salt water.
Wu Hegao said: For deficiency of both Water and Fire in the Kidney, this formula is indicated. Adding Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus) and Lu Rong (Deer Antler without Bone), named Shi Bu Wan, treats weak Chi pulses in both wrists indicating dual deficiency of Yin and Yang.
(Zhang Jingyue said) Treats insufficiency of Yuan Yang, congenital weakness, or excessive labor injury, leading to failure of Ming Men fire to warm the Earth, resulting in Spleen-Stomach deficiency-cold, reduced food intake, nausea, bloating, regurgitation, dysphagia, aversion to cold, abdominal pain, loose stools, frequent diarrhea/dysentery, or urinary incontinence. Deficient strangury, cold hernia, or cold invading the muscle spaces causing joint pain and bi-syndrome. Or cold in the Lower Jiao causing edema due to water retention. In summary, those with true Yang insufficiency must exhibit mental fatigue and timid breath. Or palpitations, inability to hold the limbs, visual hallucinations, or infertility due to Yang decline. One should quickly benefit the source of Fire to cultivate the Yuan Yang of the Right Kidney, thereby strengthening the Spirit and Qi. If Ba Wei Wan fails, take this formula, or use You Gui Yin. ([Formulas containing Gui and Fu like Ba Wei Wan and You Gui Yin are suitable only for those with excess Lung Yin; otherwise, they assist Fire and scorch Metal, potentially causing Lung disease.])
Da Huai Shu Di Huang (8 liang), Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Shan Yu Rou (Corni Fructus), Gou Qi Zi (Lycii Fructus), Tu Si Zi (Cuscutae Semen, processed), Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex, stir-fried with ginger juice), Lu Jiao Jiao (Colla Cornus Cervi, fried until bubbly, 4 liang), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 3 liang, avoid if stool is loose), Fu Zi (Prepared Aconiti Radix), Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex, 2 liang). Pill preparation as above, or form into pills the size of a bullet. Chew 2-3 pills per dose, swallow with plain water; efficacy is particularly rapid. If Yang deficiency and Qi deficiency exist, Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) must be added as the principal herb, either 2-3 liang or 5-6 liang, adjusted according to the patient's deficiency or excess. Generally, Ren Shen’s function enters the Yang aspect when combined with Yang herbs, and the Yin aspect when combined with Yin herbs. To rapidly tonify the Yang of the Ming Men, adding Ren Shen is essential. If Yang deficiency leads to seminal emission, turbid leukorrhea, or loose stools, add Bu Gu Zhi (Psoraleae Fructus) wine-fried, 3 liang. If unsifted diarrhea or kidney diarrhea persists, add Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus) 3 liang, and Dou Kou (Myristicae Semen) 3 liang, stir-fried with flour to remove oil. If appetite decreases or digestion is difficult, accompanied by nausea, acid regurgitation (signs of Spleen-Stomach deficiency-cold), add Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) 3-4 liang, stir-fried until yellow. If abdominal pain persists, add Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus) 2 liang, soaked in hot water for half a day, then stir-fried. If lower back and knee soreness/pain occur, add He Tao Rou (Walnut Seed) with skin, 4 liang. If Yin deficiency with impotence occurs, add Ba Ji Tian (Morindae Officinalis Radix) 4 liang, and Cong Rong (Cynomorii Herba) 3 liang, or add 1-2 pairs of Yellow Dog testes, boiled in wine until soft and pounded into the mixture.
