(Yan's) Treats qi rebellion caused by the seven emotions, presenting with panting and urgency of breath, chest oppression, loss of appetite. (Anger causes qi to ascend, thought causes qi to knot, endless worry. Qi often rebels, in severe cases leading to dizziness and collapse, in mild cases leading to panting and urgency of breath, fullness and oppression hindering food intake.)
Binglang (Arecae Semen), Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), Wuyao (Linderae Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), equal parts. Grind thickly, decoct for three or four boils, take warm. Another formula replaces Renshen with Zhike (Aurantii Fructus), another adds Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) and Muxiang (Vladimiriae Radix). Grind with white wine, named Wu Mo Yin (Five-Mo Drink). Treats sudden death due to violent anger. (Named Qi Jue [Qi Syncope].)
When qi ascends, it should be descended, hence Binglang and Chenxiang are used. (Binglang is hard as iron and stone, Chenxiang sinks alone in water, thus both can descend qi.) When qi rebels, it should be smoothed,
(Jingyue) Treats syndromes of qi deficiency with sinking, blood flooding and blood collapse, yang exhaustion with critical danger. For those unsuitable for formulas containing Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) etc., but only suitable for tonifying qi, this formula is the main treatment.
Huangqi (Astragali Radix, honey-fried), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 3-5 qian), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, stir-fried), Gancao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried, 1-2 qian), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, stir-fried, 5-7 fen). If accompanied by yang deficiency and cold,
For various deficiencies and weak qi, faint and critical pulse, and massive blood loss, this formula is indicated. (In blood collapse, one must benefit qi, for substantial blood cannot be generated quickly, while formless qi must be urgently consolidated; when yang arises, yin grows.)
See Formula in Volume Twelve, Lower Section, Emergency Rescue Department. Add Jiangzhi (Ginger Juice) or Zhuli (Bamboo Sap) if there is phlegm; add Tongbian (Child's Urine) if irritable, (deficiency with fire). Add Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata) if body is cold. Renshen takes the harmonious qi of heaven and earth to form its shape, thus it is used to tonify the harmonious qi, so that as long as one breath remains, various diseases can be treated sequentially. Therefore, for critical and deficient illnesses, good physicians prioritize qi.
Treats all blood deficiencies, and women's menstrual disorders. (Early menstruation indicates heat, late menstruation indicates cold, deficiency, stagnation, or phlegm. Danxi said: Menstrual water is yin-blood. Yin must follow yang, hence its color is red. It corresponds to the moon above, and its flow has regularity, hence named Jing (Menstruation). It is the partner of qi, moving with qi. Clots indicate qi stagnation. Pain before flow indicates qi obstruction. Pain after flow indicates dual deficiency of qi and blood. Pale color also indicates deficiency. Irregular flow indicates qi disorder. Purple indicates qi heat, black indicates extreme heat. Nowadays, people see purple-black clots with pain, and generally attribute it to wind-cold invasion, using warm-hot formulas, bringing disaster swiftly. The Classic says: Excess brings harm, control brings regulation. Extreme heat combines with water transformation, so heat makes it purple, extreme makes it black. If saying wind-cold, it must be external. Even if present, less than one in ten. Yuji Wei Yi says: Cold congeals and stops flow; since it flows and is purple-black, we know it is not cold.)
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, wine-washed), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix, 3 qian), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix, 2 qian), Xiongqiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 1.5 qian). For blood deficiency add Guiban (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum); for blood dryness add Renru (Human Milk); for blood stasis add Taoren (Persicae Semen), Honghua (Carthami Flos), Jiuzhi (Allii Tuberosi Sucus), Tongbian to guide. Women's menstrual blood purple-black with rapid pulse indicates heat, add Qinlian (Scutellariae et Coptidis combination). Pale blood with slow pulse indicates cold, add Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Fuzi. Fat people with phlegm add Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma), Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum). Thin people with fire add Heizhi (Gardeniae Fructus, charred), Zimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Huangbai. Treats Foot Jueyin Meridian affected by wind-cold-damp-heat paralysis and inability to move, slurred speech, and blood deficiency gout. Add Taoren, Honghua, Zhuli, Jiangzhi to treat hemiplegia. Left side belongs to blood stasis. (If blood stasis is not removed, new blood cannot be born. Hence Taoren and Honghua are used to invigorate blood and remove stasis. Adding Jiangzhi and Zhuli is because phlegm has no left-right distinction.) Remove Baishao, add Fangfeng, named Fangfeng Danggui San (Fangfeng Angelica Powder). Treats excessive sweating leading to Spasm Syndrome. Should disperse wind and nourish blood. Remove Dihuang, add Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), named Sishen Tang (Four Divine Decoction). (Men with excessive blood loss also have this syndrome.) Tao Jieyan said: Dachengqi Tang is a qi medicine, used for pathogen moving from outside to inside. Shengdi Huanglian Tang is a blood medicine, used for pathogen moving from inside to outside. In combined qi-blood disease, symptoms like touching clothes are same. From qi to blood, blood returning to qi, Dachengqi Tang purges. From blood to qi, qi returning to blood, Shengdi Huanglian Tang governs. Both have constipation, this is the counterpart to Chengqi Tang. Also exterior-interior related to Sanhuang Shigao Tang, all are diseases of fire in Sanjiao and Pericardium. Since illness is critical, only this can descend latent fire in blood. Gangmu says: Siwu Tang along with Guizhi, Mahuang, Baihu, Chaihu, Lizhong, Sini, Zhuyu, Chengqi, Liangge etc., can all be made as Half-Decoctions, this is the general idea of Yilao's medication.] Add Dahuang, Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Gancao, Danggui use tail, Shaoyao use red, named Yuzhu San (Jade Candle Powder).
