(From *Zhouhou Beiji Fang*) Treats epidemic febrile diseases occurring one or two days after onset, characterized by headache and high fever.
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) (4 liang), Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (2 liang), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix). Mahuang can open the couli (pores) and induce sweating; Guixin can guide blood to transform into sweat; Huangqin clears heat in the upper and middle jiao; Dahuang purges heat in the middle and lower jiao; Zhigancao and Shaoyao can address the pathogenesis of epidemic plague where stagnant heat manifests from interior to exterior, which differs from Shanghan (Cold Damage) where pathogens transmit from exterior to interior. Therefore, although the disease duration is only one or two days and the condition is superficial, the treatment method must be absolutely different from that of Shanghan. (Stagnant heat is ultimately easier to resolve via exterior release; Dahuang should be used in reduced dosage.)
Treats conditions such as Shiqi (seasonal qi pathogens), Zhangqi (miasma qi), Huangbing (jaundice), Nuojie (malaria), and Chi Bai Li (dysentery with red and white discharge).
Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Biejia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum Preparated), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) (2 liang), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (5 liang), Changshan ( Dichroae Radix), Xingren (Pruni Semen Preparatum) (stir-fried, 3 liang), Badou (Crotonis Fructus) (1 liang, heart removed). Take one pill. If ineffective, add Zhizi and Danshi (Gardeniae Fructus and Soyaensis Semen Preparatum), forming Zhichi Tang (Gardenia and Fermented Soybean Decoction). Combined with Changshan, it can induce vomiting; combined with Xingren, it can release the muscle layer. Dahuang and Mangxiao constitute the principle of Chengqi Tang (Harmonizing the Qi Decoction), capable of sweeping away heat pathogens.
(From Zhang Jingyue) Treats Fengshi Huangbin (wind-damp jaundice), fever and body pain, tight pulse, simultaneous involvement of exterior and interior, difficult urination, and cold-induced diarrhea.
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) (2-3 qian), Fuling (Poria), Zhuling (Polyporus), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) (1 qian), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (2-3 qian), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) (1-2 qian). Decoct in 1.5 bowls of water and take orally.
(From Zhang Zhongjing) Treats Shaoyin syndrome of Shanghan, where yang pathogens enter the interior, causing four-ni (cold extremities) without warmth. (Heat binds in the interior.) Or cough, (qi rebellion with phlegm.) Or palpitations, (with fluid retention.) Or difficult urination, Or abdominal pain, Or diarrhea with a sensation of heaviness in the anus. (All caused by heat binding in the interior. When Shanghan pathogens are in the Taiyang, Yangming, and Shaoyang meridians, hands and feet are necessarily hot. Upon reaching the Taiyin meridian, hands and feet become warm. Upon reaching the Shaoyang meridian, heat pathogens deepen, and limbs become cold and unwarmed. Upon reaching the Jueyin meridian, hands and feet become cold. The Classics state: "The deeper the heat, the deeper the coldness; the slighter the heat, the slighter the coldness." This decoction is used to dissipate heat transmitted through the meridians.)
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), ground equally into powder. Mix with water and drink. For cough, add Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) (to restrain rebellious qi) and Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (to disperse lung cold), along with Fuling (Poria).
The Classics state: "For all cases of four-ni (cold extremities), purgation is contraindicated." Therefore, Zhishi is used to drain bound heat, Gancao regulates rebellious qi, Chaihu disperses yang pathogens, and Shaoyao conserves primordial yin. Using bitter and pungent flavors...
