(From *Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang*) When cold damage disease is first perceived, with headache, body heat, and a surging pulse, this prescription should be taken immediately.
Scallion White (a handful) Fermented Soybean (one sheng) Decoct and take to induce sweating. If there is no sweat, add Puerariae Radix three liang (from Cui's Formula).
Scallion unblocks Yang (Scallion is hollow, belongs to Lung vegetables, disperses pathogens of the Hand-Taiyin Lung and Hand-Yangming Large Intestine meridians), Fermented Soybean ascends and disperses; both can induce sweating. Since pathogens are initially at the exterior, it is appropriate to take this first. It is named Lianxu Scallion White Decoction. (From *Shanghan Baiwen Ge*, i.e., *Huoren Shu*) The therapeutic effect is the same.
(From *Shanghan Baiwen Ge*, i.e., *Huoren Shu*) Treats cold damage causing headache, aversion to cold with high fever, neck stiffness, dim vision, nasal congestion with heavy voice, wind-phlegm cough. Also treats seasonal epidemic diseases, miasma, ghost malaria, etc. Or voices like frog croaking, red eyes, mouth sores. Damp-toxin flowing and depositing, swollen feet and cheeks, throat obstruction, toxic dysentery, various sores and rashes. (If Wind-Cold, then aversion to cold with fever, headache and neck stiffness. Wind-Cold in the Lung, then nasal congestion, heavy voice, profuse phlegm and cough, voice like frog croaking. Commonly known as Toad Plague, actually caused by Wind-Cold-Damp-Heat Qi interfering upwards, causing red eyes and mouth sores; flowing downwards causes foot swelling. Injury to the Yangming meridian causes cheek swelling, knotting in the Shaoyin meridian causes stagnation in the intestines and stomach leading to toxic dysentery, erupting on the skin causing sores and rashes.)

Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix enters the Taiyang meridian to manage wandering wind, Angelicae Pubescentis Radix enters the Shaoyin meridian to manage hidden wind, and additionally removes dampness and relieves pain. Bupleuri Radix dissipates heat and raises clear Yang, cooperating with Chuanxiong Rhizoma to harmonize blood and level... Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma... The formula is... He... Bie... Exterior pathogens begin to exit via the medicinal power. If the person is constitutionally weak, although the medicine acts outwardly, the Middle Qi collapses from within; for mild cases, pathogens are half-out half-in; for severe cases, they retreat inward following the collapse of Yuan Qi, resulting in ceaseless fever. Therefore, for those with weak constitutions, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (3 to 7 fen) must be added to exterior-releasing medicines to slightly assist Yuan Qi, serving as the master force to drive out pathogens, allowing pathogens to be expelled in a surge with the help of the medicine. This is entirely not for the purpose of tonifying weakness. Even in harmonizing formulas, with the strong presence of Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma mediating, when exterior pathogens encounter righteous Qi...
Even for measles, malaria, dysentery, as well as stroke, phlegm-stroke, cold-stroke, heat-stroke, carbuncles, postpartum conditions, etc., Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma is generally avoided in the initial stage. For weak individuals facing serious illness, chances of survival are ignored. Ancient formulas for releasing the exterior through sweating, such as Wuji San, Rensu Yin, and Baidu San, and for harmonizing, such as Xiaochaihu Tang, Baihu Tang, Zhuye Shigao Tang, all use Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma to lead internal pathogens outward, achieving rapid recovery. Why is this not examined? For exterior-contracted patients with weak constitutions, if fever persists after sweating, or after purging/harmonizing, and high fever with groaning burns up fluids until the body is like dry firewood, doctors find their skills exhausted because Yuan Qi has been depleted, hence medicines fail to work. If Yuan Qi is not yet depleted, using Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (3 to 7 fen) first to guide medicines deep to drive out pathogens, why would sweating or harmonizing methods fail? Li Dongyuan treated internal injury with external contraction using Buzhong Yiqi Tang, adding one or two exterior-releasing herbs, taken hot to disperse exterior pathogens, a merit lasting millennia. In the specialty of Cold Damage, from Zhang Zhongjing to the present, Ming dynasty physicians' formularies all use Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma. Why do modern physicians exclude it entirely, losing the transmitted essence, causing weak individuals to have little chance of survival, without realizing the harm? Those who kill by improperly using Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma commit the error of combining it with Atractylodis Rhizoma, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Cinnamon Twig, Zingiberis Rhizoma, Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, etc., for warm tonification. Not considering its combination with Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, Bupleuri Radix, Peucedani Radix, Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Pinelliae Tuber, Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, Platycodonis Radix, Scutellariae Radix... Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma... ...
