(Yan Shi) Treats body restlessness and pain caused by wind-stroke, stiffness and tension in the neck and back, coldness and numbness of the hands and feet, heaviness in the waist and knees, and difficulty in movement. (All these symptoms are due to deficiency of Ying and Wei Qi with invasion of Wind-Damp pathogens. The Classics state: Deficiency of Ying leads to insensibility; deficiency of Wei leads to inability to move. Insensibility refers to the skin's loss of sensation to pain and itch; inability to move refers to the limbs' inability to function. Qibo stated: There are four major types of wind-stroke: first is Pian Ku (hemiplegia), characterized by paralysis of half the body; second is Feng Fei, characterized by absence of pain but inability to control the limbs; third is Feng Yin (sudden loss of consciousness), characterized by sudden unconsciousness; fourth is Feng Bi, where various Bi syndromes resemble wind diseases. Jiayan said: These conditions are easily confused but are actually distinct. In wind diseases, the Yang aspect is affected first; in Bi diseases, the Yin aspect is affected first. The causes of Bi include Wind, Cold, and Dampness, which mix together and cannot be attributed solely to one. However, if Wind prevails, it is called Xing Bi (Wandering Bi) because Wind nature is mobile; if Cold prevails, it is called Tong Bi (Painful Bi) because Cold causes contraction and tension; if Dampness prevails, it is called Zhuo Bi (Fixed Bi) because Dampness causes heaviness and stagnation.)
Huangqi (Astragali Radix, honey-fried), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, wine-washed), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra, wine-fried), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, fried), Pianzi Jianghuang (Curcumae Longae Rhizoma, wine-fried). Decoct with Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Dazao (Jujubae Fructus).
Acrid flavors can disperse Cold, and Wind can overcome Dampness. Fangfeng and Qianghuo eliminate Dampness and dispel Wind. When Qi flows freely, Blood moves; when Blood moves, Wind disperses. Huangqi and Zhi Gancao tonify Qi and serve as the Sovereign herbs.
(Yi Lao) Treats Wind-Cold invading the intestines and stomach due to deficiency, leading to diarrheal discharge with undigested food, and intestinal wind with bleeding. Also treats wind-deficiency with increased appetite, locked jaw, convulsions of the hands and feet, muscle twitching, and facial edema, named Wei Feng (Stomach Wind).
Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, soil-fried), Fuling (Poria), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, wine-washed), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix, wine-fried), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) in equal parts. Decoct with over one hundred grains of Sumi (Panicum miliaceum).
Wei Feng is caused by Stomach deficiency allowing Wind pathogens to invade. Wind belongs to Liver Wood, which can overcome Spleen Earth. Therefore, Renshen, Baizhu, and Fuling are used to secure Spleen Qi and benefit Wei Qi.
