This pill treats carbuncles and sores (Yongju), consumptive disease (Xulao), wind-stroke (Zhongfeng), edema (Shuizhong), abdominal distension with fluid accumulation (Guzhang), spleen deficiency diarrhea (Pixie), chronic dysentery (Jiuli), chronic malaria (Jiumai), corpse-like fainting (Shijue), pain connecting the hypochondrium to the heart, nocturnal emission in dreams (Mengxie), seminal emission (Yijing), women's metrorrhagia (Xuebeng), leukorrhea (Baidai), juvenile bone-steaming consumption heat (Guzheng Laore), all conditions of deficiency and emaciation, yellow-black jaundice (Huangheidan), acute and chronic infantile convulsions (Jiman Jingfeng), and over a hundred other critical illnesses nearing death; it can cure them all. One pill is more effective than ten pills of Jin Ye Dan (Golden Liquid Pill); long-term use extends life and promotes longevity.
Sulfur (Liu Huang), Realgar (Ming Xionghuang), Cinnabar (Chen Sha), Red Kaolin (Chishi Zhi), Purple Quartz (Zi Shi Ying), Yangqi Stone (Yangqi Shi) [processed by calcination and quenching in vinegar three times].
Each ingredient is taken in two liang, ground into coarse powder, and placed together into a Yangcheng jar. The top is covered, secured with iron wire, and sealed tightly with salt mud one cun thick. It is dried in the shade. A pit is dug, half buried underground and half exposed. It is subjected to fierce fire for one day and night, then removed from a cold furnace. Ground into fine powder, it is granulated with vinegar into pills the size of Chinese parasol tree seeds. Each dose consists of ten pills, taken on an empty stomach with water; children take five pills, and infants take two or three pills. All show efficacy.
This pill tonifies Kidney Qi, preserves complexion, invigorates blood vessels, strengthens sinews and bones, lightens gait, clarifies hearing and vision, and extends life. It treats consumptive disease, fever, cough, hemoptysis, bone-steaming tidal sweating, palpitations (Zhengchong), fright and palpitation (Jingji), all yin-type carbuncles and cold fistulas, retraction of smallpox/measles lesions in children, edema, abdominal distension, yellow-black jaundice, and all critical diseases of deficiency and emaciation. Its merit is equivalent to Yanshou Dan (Longevity Pill); regular use can lead to living beyond one hundred years. However, only the wealthy can compound this pill; the poor find it difficult to prepare. Taking Jin Ye Dan alone is also excellent.
Cinnabar (Da Zhusha) one jin (must be of high purity/wall-quality), ground into coarse powder, entered into a Yangcheng jar. First mixed with honey, the cinnabar is placed at the bottom. Next, powdered Dianthera (Qumai), Aconitum carmichaelii (Caowu), and Spinach (Bo Cai) each five qian are mixed with five qian of egg white, spread over the cinnabar. The jar is covered, secured with iron wire, sealed with salt mud, and dried in the shade. A pit is dug, burying the jar five parts deep and exposing five parts. It is subjected to fierce fire for one day and night, then removed from a cold furnace. Ground into fine powder, it is made into pills the size of Euryale seeds using vinegar and Pinellia paste, coated with Talcum (Huashi) to enhance luster. Stored in silver containers, each dose is three or five pills, taken on an empty stomach facing east with warm wine.
Whenever these ingredients are used in medicinal preparations or as coating agents, processing them in this manner renders them non-toxic, allowing for safe administration.
