This condition is caused by lying supine on damp ground during the hot summer months, or entering water and exposing oneself to wind after sexual exertion, thereby contracting pathogenic qi. It causes swelling of both eyes, cloud-like patches appearing on the skin, or sensations like needle pricks in the muscles, or numbness and insensitivity. When swollen, it resembles carbuncles and sores (Yong Ju), leading to ulceration of muscles and bones and death. If the pathogen invades Feishu (BL13) and Xinshu (BL15), it is called Pulmonary Leprosy (Fei Lai) and Heart Leprosy (Xin Lai), which are easy to treat; if it invades Pishu (BL20), Ganshu (BL18), and Shenshu (BL23), it is called Spleen, Liver, and Kidney Leprosy, which are difficult to treat. Medical methods passed down in the world have no efficacy.
The orthodox method of the Yellow Emperor: First moxa two points at Feishu (BL13), fifty moxa cones each point. Then moxa Xinshu (BL15), then Pishu (BL20), then Ganshu (BL18), then Shenshu (BL23). Repeat this cycle until complete recovery. Internally administer one dose of Huma San (Sesame Powder) and one dose of Huangu Dan (Bone-Transforming Pill). However, ordinary people can recover with moxibustion alone; if ulcers expose bone and muscle, it is difficult to treat. (The *Classic* states: "When pulse wind becomes leprosy." This implies that wind pathogen invading humans moves swiftly and changes frequently. Now, wind evil remains in the vessels, lingering without departing, thus forming ulcerative leprosy. There is a distinction between injuring Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi) and Wei Qi (Defensive Qi). When Ying Qi is injured, Ying Qi becomes hot and turbid, causing the nasal bridge to collapse, complexion to deteriorate, and skin to ulcerate. When Wei Qi is injured, wind qi enters together with the Taiyang channel, travels through the vessel acupoints, scatters between the muscle layers, conflicts with Wei Qi, obstructs its pathway, and causes muscle ulceration. This condition results from inhaling toxic, foul, and turbid qi of heaven and earth, or from excessive drunkenness and sexual exertion, or from mountain miasma. If toxin is in the Qi level, symptoms appear first on the upper body; if in the Blood level, on the lower body; if both Qi and Blood are affected, symptoms appear simultaneously above and below. One must further differentiate toxins of the five Zang organs: Lung toxin manifests as white scales on the skin and premature loss of eyebrows; Liver toxin manifests as purple blisters on the face; Kidney toxin manifests as pain starting in the soles of the feet; Spleen toxin manifests as body-wide lesions resembling tinea; Heart toxin damages the eyes. These are severe cases of organ toxins. Furthermore, know the five signs of death: Skin death presents as numbness and insensitivity; Muscle death presents as lack of pain upon cutting or pricking; Blood death presents with ulceration and eye paralysis; Tendon death presents with nail shedding; Bone death presents with collapse of the nasal bridge. These represent the most severe injuries to the five Zang organs and are difficult to treat. If hoarseness and blindness occur, it is beyond remedy.)
Case Records
One patient had black swelling on the face, with a cloud-like purple mass under the left ear resembling a coiled snake, and needle-like pain in the muscles, while hands and feet were insensitive. Inquiry revealed he had drunk excessively and slept for three days with colleagues. Upon waking, his left arm was black and swollen like a snake. He took wind-dispelling herbs, which reduced symptoms temporarily, but they recurred. I said: "This is not wind pathogen, but dampness lodging in the acupoints of the five Zang organs. Previous wind-dispelling herbs worked by 'wind overcoming dampness,' hence temporary relief, but the root of toxicity remained." Prescribed moxibustion on Shenshu (BL23), two points, fifty cones each, and one dose of Huangu Dan. Complete recovery ensued, with complexion returning to its lustrous state.
Another patient had whole-body red swelling and pain like cone pricks. I said: "Your disease is easy to treat." Prescribed moxibustion on Xinshu (BL15) and Feishu (BL13), four points total, one hundred cones each. Administered two doses of Huma San. Recovery occurred, though hands and feet remained slightly stiff. Re-moxibustion on the same points, fifty cones, followed by two more doses of Huma San led to full recovery.
A third patient suffered from Leprosy (Li Feng), with complete loss of beard and eyebrows, red and swollen face and eyes, and ulcers on hands and feet. Prescribed moxibustion on Feishu (BL13) and Xinshu (BL15), four points total, ten cones each. Administered one dose of Huangu Dan. Full recovery occurred within two months, with beard and eyebrows regrowing.
